  • Talking about Rwanda and learning about the genocide makes me so incredibly sad and ashamed that I didn't know about it when it was going on and that I didn't do anything, but then I remember that I was less than a year old at the time. It doesn't really help, though.

  • A man from Rwanda came to my school not long ago. His family was killed when he was ten years old. He hid in a hole in the woods and barely escaped death because there was a large snake in it.

  • If the vlobrothers are still going this strong in 2015 i hope that there is something like this for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide

  • dammit why wasn't i a nerdfighter back then...i could have been the irish fiddle player :(

  • @Ravenclaw797 ME TOO! I LOVE playing my violin!

  • I'm disappointed that this video is one of the least viewed in the vlogbrothers' archive.

  • It's incredible that now, with the situation in Libya, people are standing up and spreading the word and saying 'Hey, we care about you, and we are proud of you for sticking up for your rights!' If this isn't a sign of progress, I'm not sure what is.

  • @o00harris00o actually it's from the Bible

  • I realise this is a over a year old, but just felt the need to add this comment. What happened in Rwanda was beyond description. However, the UN commander in Rwanda, Canadian General Romeo Dallaire, stayed, and begged to be allowed to help. He was denied. He has gone on to write an excellent book on Rwanda's and his struggles (he returned to Canada shattered), and push for ways to rehabilitate child soldiers.

  • Wow -- that's ironic. Just as Hank lit the candle, it got covered by an ad for some "Combat Arms" online game with "the most guns"...

  • OMG... yes i do understand that this video is to show that we all care about something that happened years ago but i do have to point out THE SOJO BEAT MANGA ON THE BOOK SHELF IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!!!! its black and white with the red circular emblum on the bottom.......

  • why is it sparksflyup?

  • It's late, but I'll try to vote for Travis anyway.

  • how many emails an youtrube accounts do you have

  • song written uploading now.

  • I'll write a song for the cause.

  • Bill Clinton, the UN, or NATO could have stopped Rwanda quickly with 5000 troops.

The 8,000 daily deaths were inflicted by wild-eyed men with machetes. Any show of civilized force would have popped the balloon and ended it.... Read More

May the souls of those who passed away rest in peace and may God guide Rwanda to a better future?

    Never again.

  • If the international community could have intervened effectively in the Holocaust, who among them would say that they had a moral obligation not to go in?

If the international community couldve stopped Rwanda, surely, if they had the ability, that would be something that they would have to strongly consider and act.

So when genocide is happening, when ethnic cleansing is happening somewhere around the world and the international community stand idly by, that diminishes everyone.

  • DFTBA. =]

  • nice manga

  • That is so totally manga in the bookcase at 0:34 stacked horizontally. Looks like the Cowboy Bebop books but there seems to be too many of them. He must have the whole collection including the ones from the other (non-original) author. Is the yellow book manga, too? I don't recognize the cover.

  • i think the yellow ones are inuyasha

  • okay, i'm briefly addressing all the previous comments of people not understanding the concept of lighting candles for Rwanda.

it isn't to stop the violence.

the 100 days of genocide happened 15 yrs ago. we are a bit late for that.

the candles are meant to show that we care, that we're sorry that we were blindsided to what had happened.

instead of bitching just to seem better than everyone, i'm going to show that i care.

I'm Jordan Morris. I'm am going to light a candle for Rwanda.

  • it's less of a who, and more of a where.

  • haha. i realized that after i responded haha.

  • no.

  • OMG its a country!

  • @keyX0 i know your comment is two years old, you are a beautiful person.

    DFTBA <3

  • when is the deadline to send in a video?

  • This well-meaning individual isn't doing any good (of course he isn't killing anyone either)

If you want to stop genocide, you'd better be ready to put boots on the ground with automatic weapons.

  • Just who's "boots and automatic weapons" do you suggest? I imagine you mean some government's military? Governments are the #1 obstacle! Lazy ass people sitting around lighting candles and singing Kum-ba-yah are part of the problem. Until people around the world start facing down their fat ass governments nothing will change. Humanity has the power, but is too damn selfish and lazy to use it, soon it will be gone.

You people who thumb down my 1st comment can shove your lit candles up your asses.

  • I don't light candles unless there's a power failure- it's a waste of wax.

The United States could have intervened (we had a Marine battalion on a helio carrier an hour's flight away), but Clinton didn't give a shit.

    Lighting candles accomplishes NOTHING

    The UN: ditto

So if military intervention isn't the answer, what is?

(You seem to predict mankind's imminent extinction. If that's the case, you are very funny)

  • "imminent extinction"? I would only predict mankind's fall to stupidity - so I guess that could lead to extinction - depending on religious beliefs one may have.

Speaking of stupidity - I know some people have trouble comprehending the written word - I gave you an answer, read again.

  • i want to see him eat the god dam peeps!!!!

  • im travis!!!

  • GAH! I want to light a candle so bad, but I don't have a camera to do so! Dx

  • I agree with this statement:the western powers have little or no interest in countries like Rwanda. It has no strategic, military, or economic value. So once the westerners and the media had been evacuated, it is easy for these governments to ensure that the subject more-or-less disappears from the radar screens of the west. (Mango Singhams Web Journal)

  • On Saturday I was reading about the film Hotel Rwanda and I totally agree with the statements in this video. I wish I could have done something about the horror happening 15 years ago in Rwanda. I never feel more helpless than when i look back at horrible events that occurred before i was born and wish i could have made a difference.

But now, in other ways, I know I can make a difference.

Thank you Hank for this video.

My name is Caitlyn, I am 18 and i am taking a moment of silence for Rwanda.

  • then do something about darfur and let me know how far you get.

  • OK anryth, name one species of animal that kills massive amounts of its own kind for ideological differences or some other dumb reason and then you can say humans aren't exceptions to nature. There is no species more cruel than mankind. There is no species more out of touch with nature than mankind. You think your amoral apathy makes you smarter than those who care? Wake up or leave the rest of us alone. You are nothing but a waste of space.

  • the people posting negative responses are the reason the movie "idiocracy" was made. love the movie but its about those of you who can't just say "huh, hank's doing something nice without expecting any kind of selfish gain"

  • exactly. thank you.

  • My name is Alex.

I am 13 years old, and I am taking a moment of silence for Rwanda.

  • I have searched the whole house for a candle, but I can't find one. But I will sit here, and take a moment of silence.

My Name Is Sara (I'm not sure if I should say my last name)

    I am 15 years old,

and I am taking a moment of silence for Rwanda.

    Thank you.

  • You're a dick, you know. At least help

  • they probably don't care about candles. they care that we care. we light candles and show our support because we don't have the power to help them. people do what they can, the idea is to day Thank You.

  • and what exactly are YOU doing to help Rwanda? At least he's raising awareness...would you rather watch a video about whoever the hell Britney Spears is sleeping with these days?

  • you know why it's important to light candles for Rwanda? To raise awareness? B/c if we don't, no one will know to try and stop it, and then we've got a situation like the Holocaust. The US govt. knew what Hitler was doing years before WW2, but they kept it top-secret. Maybe we could have done something-----what, you ask? I don't know. But anything is better than nothing.

  • I somewhat agree with holding off on war in WWII. At least on America's part. During the depression, following the Monroe Doctrine. If just made sense not to go to war. But all in all I see where your coming from.

  • would you like me to turn your world upside down for you?

surely your tiny brain can comprehend the simple notion that nothing in this world is good or bad, light or dark, justice or evil, it is entirley what the individual perceives to be what it is. you say you stand for justice and you are virtuous for it, but rly all you stand for is your perception of the world inwhich society has outlined for you. lets use our brains here please, humans are not special, and we are not exceptons to nature.

  • I think we are. I believe we were created to rule nature, thus making us above it. Not exceptions to it's laws, simply better than animals. There are certain actions that are universally considered evil. It's called ethics, a conscious, a sense of right and wrong. Either way, your idea still proves we are more than animals. No animal I know of can percieve his own idea of right and wrong. They do what they must to survive. No what they percieve to be right.

  • man originates in nature where he is "free" to rule himself, however he is also responsible for his own survival and is sunject to all natural laws. man then moves into society for protection but gives up his natural freedoms in exchane. do not let this unconscious loss of freedom and society cloud your ability to reason. you, just like an animal, are required to survive, only you have to do it in a social enviroment chained the ideas of others. also, there is NO universal coe of ethics.

  • What the fuck is wrong with you? Killing thousands of decently innocent lives doesn't matter? You are fucked up. Your the one with the pathetic life. Natural Selection occurs but only inside the realms of the animal kingdom where it nescasary to kill or be killed. Kill to eat, kill to survive. Not in human culture where we don't have to kill to survive. Granted, we are destructive creatures, but I believe it is not best to sit back and let humans self destructive. Fuck off and get a heart prick.

  • true

  • ur my favorite nerd fighter (love you. cutie) (GNU! {Geeks and Nerds Unite})! huge fan!

  • I do not have a web cam

but I did light a candle

    "Hi,

  • why is this coming up after i've already watched it....twice! Grrrrr YT!

  • tutsis had it coming

  • I voted for him!

  • threadless shirt

helping in the smallest ways just to help :)

  • I love your way of thinking

  • politics, land power grabs and human indifference, sigh

  • cool shirt

  • The problem with caring is that you have to do it for everyone else

  • Who's Rwanda?

  • Rwanda is an African country, not a person. Watch the movie Hotel Rwanda to understand the meaning behind this video.

  • Wait, she owns a hotel?

  • Obama lied

    the economy died

  • wow, you are such a jackass

  • LOL

  • wow.......one second: fuck Rwanda

    the next :

god bless you hank and john

    wired......im not taking sides....

  • fuck you chief, think about your fellow human beings

  • because maybe not everyone is as selfish as you are.

  • right on!

  • maybe because they need the help? selfish much? i mean everythign in the USA is bad any everything. but when it comes to human lives the imaginary borders we draw that divide the world are irrelevent. you need to help everyone. just cuz you help someone else doesnt mean you stop helping americans. but seriously america has all the technology and shit. they can handle themselfvs. you arent helping "rwanda" your helpign the little kids that had their family killed. the people. not country.

  • I understand that. But what about the homeless children and orphans in AMERICA? What about the thousands of families who are losing their homes, the people who are being wrongly imprisoned (meaning people like the border patrol agents who were incarcerated for doing their job).... There is just as much shit going on in the USA as anywhere else. Maybe not the same degree of shit, but shit nonetheless. Our country's welfare comes first, then we give aid after we are in order. Otherwise we fail.

  • america is a country founded on the ideal that every person born is born with rights regardless of their color or religion.

thats america not some political ideology or a area of land america is an ideology in its own.a thought, a dream, not some lined land mass on the map more ppl need to realize what america means !!!!!

  • Sure thats a warm and fuzzy thought, but America has an OBLIGATION to take care of ITS OWN citizens, not any other country's. We DO take care of other countries though, and we do it by the BILLIONS of dollars every year. Dont make it sound like we dont help anyone. Its time we keep some of that cash in our own country, stop exporting work and manufacturing to other nations, and STOP the influx of illegal aliens! Only then can we begin the healing of our OWN country andbe in any position to help.

  • be carefull you seem to have a blind support of a system not the spirit which it was created to support and facilitate

  • Thinking that a country has an obligation to get itself under control and ensure the safety and prosperity of its own citizens before it begins to help others is blind support? America has more on its plate than it can chew already with the troubles in the economy, the prison systems, its educational system, and border safety. You, sir, are a fool and your name suits you well. Keep crying for Rwanda, but I guarantee that your tears arent doing any good unless you GO there and do something.

  • I'm going to make a video today.

And I was going to do the big gay sketch show but decided against it because I'm too young. XD So, I didn't really decide, they did.

  • DAMMIT! I don't have a camera. Can I pretend I have a camera and light my candle anyway? "I'm Brianna, I'm fifteen years old, I live in the United States, and I'm lighting a candle of hope for Rwanda."

  • god bless you hank and john!

  • you ignorant fuck.

  • can i still buy a copy of paper towns?

  • violence breeds more violence. this is a peaceful way to honor those who died. u actually look like the jerk right now.

  • So just saying you care and lighting a fuckign candle is going to fix rwanda's problems? Thats the problem with you artsy fartsy english major activists. You say you care so much and do things like light candles. Does that do any good? NO.

Pick up a gun, join a militia, and fucking shoot some bad guys in rwanda. Then make a video saying you care. Otherwise you just look like a liberal asshole.

  • joeyisunfunny. joeyseemstohavemissedthepoint.

The problem that Hank wants to fix isn't in Rwanda. It's here at home. It's the ignorance, insensitivity, intolerance and apathy found HERE. You can't fight apathy with a gun. You can't show caring and concern with a gun.

Hank and John have 72,000 subscribers. They are obviously doing something right.

Think about what your typing in the comments before you spew them out, joey. Edit yourself. Otherwise you just look like an asshole, joey.

  • I think people need to be more upset about the issues in the UNITED STATES and want to FIX OUR NATIONS PROBLEMS FIRST before we cry for Rwanda. Little example... The 2 border patrol agents who were doing their job and fired upon a border jumper drug runner didnt listen to them... they went to jail for protecting America. America has no backbone and is willing to appease other countries at the cost of our own safety and integrity before offending anyone. We have become a country of pussies.

  • I have no camera.

"My name is Esther Binstock. I'm fifteen years old, I Live in the United States, and though you can't see me, I am lighting a candle for Rwanda."

May we not wake to find a better world, but rather fall asleep knowing we have worked hard to create one.

  • I was going to do this. I don't have a candle. Thus, "My name is Yasmina. I love in the United States and I am lighting a virtual candle for Rwanda."

  • be respectful.

  • i wish there was more of this out there. I was surprised to find your. lol. I pray for more intelligence and peace in this world.

  • This is such a good idea, I will definitely do it!

  • Your candle looks like the cob of corn after you've eaten all the kernals off it.

  • The root of the problem is not the genocide itself or the lack of caring about it. These were horrible things, yes, but they are the symptoms of the larger problem, which is the "us versus them" mentality that is so prevalent - not just in this country, but throughout the world. It is telling people, like John said in his video on this topic, that "You are not one of Us, you are one of Them, and therefore your suffering is not important." This is IMPORTANT because it seeks to change that.

  • although there is nothing we can do now, we can prevent something like that from happening again in the future.

By raising awareness, we can educated and learn from the past and hopefully, nothing like that will ever happen like that in the future.

  • *lights virtual candle*

  • Great video, Hank!

  • I don't have a camera and can't make a video but i will light a camera 4 10seconds

  • *lights virtual candle*

  • Super Sheep, you can argue that it was not our place to intervene in the Genocide in Rwanda. (I don't believe that, but you can make that argument.) But you can't argue that we are not supposed to CARE.

Lighting a candle is a small symbolic gesture. But not a meaningless one. Caring and Hope aren't meaningless words.

Take your despair, nihilism and apathy and be gone. If you really feel like explaining who you are and what you think helps NO ONE, why are you sharing your comments here?

  • I am here because i watched a video and wanted to voice my opinion.

  • But if your opinion matters... If your opinion can make a difference... (And I say that it does!) Then the lighting of candles as a symbol of Hope and Caring makes a difference.

The people who are lighting candles only want to voice their opinion. That opinion is "I CARE!" It's really that simple.

  • I PLAY IRISH FIDDLE!!!

  • *lights virtual candle*

  • there is nothing we as americans can do to stop the ethnic hatred and therefore, the killing

  • stop making excuses. complacency breeds more killing.

  • Lighting a candle won't stop the killing. Lighting a candle won't stop the hatred.

Nobody is asking you to turn back time and stop the genocide. Hank is asking you to CARE. Lighting a candle says, "I care."

Don't start with, "I can't change the problem, so I might as well ignore the problem."

Nothing happens, nothing changes until somebody cares.

Nobody is asking you to change the world, just one person. YOU! Just light a candle of hope and caring. "You matter." That's the message.

  • The problem ? what is the problem ? what hope are you talking about. This genocide has been over for a long time now and there are bigger issues going on at this very moment, lighting a candle saying "I care" That 15 years ago your country split up into two parties and had a war. Does not change things going on TODAY. This is not a problem any more, and i am not saying ignore things that dont affect me . Im saying the past is the past. And focusing on it wont help us evolve into a better future.

  • here here.

  • The problem is that 15 years ago there was more than a "War" between two parties. There was vicious, brutal, evil ethnic cleansing and GENOCIDE. Innocents and noncombatants were slaughtered wholesale. This was met with ignorance and apathy by the rest of the world. We collectively said, "We don't care." We can't change the genocide, but we can change the ignorance and apathy. We can choose to CARE and say, "I CARE."

And unless we learn from the past, we will NEVER evolve into a better future.

  • Sigh... The problem is not the genocide itself. Although of course that was indeed a problem. The problem is the darkness that resides within the character of humanity. The primitive part of our brain that convinces us to commit such acts. The only way to stop future genocides is by spreading education and awareness; by reminding people that, yes, this kind of thing does happen, and it might happen again.

Focusing on the past does help us evolve in to a better future in some cases, this is it.

  • Um, what is with the six million asshole comments?

Not that the term "asshole comments" makes an sense.

    But you know.

    I actually like this video.

  • yeah I agree, what's your problem dudes? (not the person I'm replying to)

  • please go die.

  • i hear juliaaaaaaa ^_^

  • I play violin and am part Irish, and I have a skype mic, but I dun think I can play fiddle D=

  • good for you

  • I actually DO know of an Irish fiddle player that happens to play in my friend's band St. Patrick's Folly. I might be able to check that out for you if needed.

  • I have that exact same candle! xD Not that thats the point, I just pulled it out yesterday and wondered who would have a candle like that...

  • Aww bollock, im an irish nerdfighter with no fiddle skills whatsoever... i could learn? AH!

  • Darn im an Irish Dancer nerdfighter, close but no cigar

I do know some fiddler players though, but they're here in seattle..though i suppose you just need recordings..

  • Hahahhahahah, I read the info quick, and I thought it said videos@"phalliance". I assumed this was a portmanteau of "phallic" and "alliance". Lol.

  • I'm digging the "This is not a pipe" Mario shirt.

  • Global indifference is global catastrophe.

    (Yes, you may quote that)

  • shallow.

  • And if I were a 'deep' person I would 'light a candle for Rwanda' , record the event and then post it on the internet ?

Will 'Rwandans' one day click on my video and might their eyes well up with tears of gratitude?

  • where is the tv remote

  • Lorraine Garland (the Fabulous Lorraine) is the only Irish Fiddle Player I know. She works with Neil Gaiman, who is vaguely connected to Ken Plume. In other words, she's running in similar social, musical and intellectual circles. That might be worth a try.

  • you're 28?! You look sooooooooo much younger than that! Seriously!

  • i kno. =]

  • huhhhhh?

  • Very awesome.

  • Yes, there are people who care about Rowanda. Not enough, far from enough. So, thank you for doing this.

I volunteered for Amnesty, so I kind of know what's happened.

  • When are the Rwanda videos due by?

  • March 22nd! :)

  • I really wanted to make one of these Video's for Rowanda, but I dont have a camera :'( I tried getting my hands on one, but so far no such luck. A agree with you about feeling ashamed of it cuz after learning about it I was embaressed ashamed, and angry. I just wish that when it had happened that I had been much much older and with much more money so that I could have done SOMETHING! At the very least, I'd have a camera now.

  • thank you for being so wonderful hank,

  • Oh, my goodness, Hank. First I was tearing up a little bit about the Rwandan genocide and thinking about where I was going to find my candle.

Then my brain blew up and pushed more tears out when you mentioned the Big Gay Sketch Show voting. (but happy ones). Thanks for the help, votes are up to 1800!

    ~Trav

  • I play guitar and fiddle... I am also Irish and can play Irish style very well...I'm also a very shy person. Sorry :( Good luck finding someone to help you though ^_^

  • When is the deadline for Rwanda videos?? I really want to make one, but I won't have access to a candle or matches until March 27.

  • That woman's story is so sad!

  • what about Darfur...?

  • Exactly...

  • IM A IRISH FIDDLE PLAYER!!! I'M A VIOLINIST I actually started with canadian and Irish fiddle and then i moved into classical for the technique. Unfortunately I'm extremely shy and do not have a very good microphone.
