I've taken trains in France (cos i'm french :p) and in Japan, so i don't think we have the same definition of what you call "VERY FAST", but well taking this train seems really interesting to see the wonderful landscapes you have in your country.
Having an electricity-powered rail network in Canada may be much harder than in Europe/JP because there would be huge losses of power on the long distances between cities.
i expect to return there during this awaited summer of 2009 to get other clips like this especialy the express who pass between 7 and 8 pm whit a tripod
Well, Canda has just about the cheapest electricity in the world, due to all the hydro dams way up north, so it's a mystery as to why we haven't been electrified.
Well, it's mainly to do with the fact that VIA relies on funding from the government, and they can't get enough money to install all the wires, and buy electric locos.
Personally I don't mind, because it's more exciting with diesel, but from an environmental and economic standpoint, it's a differenct story.
That's the other big issue. Because of the size of our country and the distance between the major centres, rail traffic isn't as popular of an option. Toronto to Montréal is 600kms, Toronto to Vancouver is nearly 5,000. Until we have high speed rail (which is taking its own sweet time), most people prefer to fly, which cuts demand for electrification of the existing network. Personally, I always take the train rather than fly, it's such a better experience. Now to convince the rest...
@TheRockettt well from what I know is that they are planning on building a transrapid line from Toronto through ottawa to Montreal or even Quebec city. And then they wanted to share a high speed line with the americans going from Vancouver to LA. Yet there will never be a high speed train across Canada unless the train would travel 500kmh. But the cost building this track is not worth it so its either take the 3 day journey by train or if you need to be there quick, we have Air Canada.
It would cut maintenance & fuel costs, though. And as far as Russia goes, the Trans Siberian Railway is fully electrified, the last gap being closed in 2001. As oil supplies dwindle, I expect to see massive programmes of rail electrification in North America.
@indianrailways it is beciause of that and also the distancesare so great to electrify. montréal has one electrified commuter train line because it passes through a long tunnel banned to diesel-electric engines for emission reason.via wants a uniform system and many lines are very remote and long like in quebec, manitoba and bc so dieses engines that can be used on all routes are logical
Let's say some frnakly stuff.... The Distance between Toronto and Montreal is almost identical between Tokyo and Osaka...The first Shinkensen express From Tokyo to Osaka... It took 3 hours duration time...it was 1964...It doesn't matter. But the problem is railway is not part of North American Culture...Automobiles and Airplane are really matters for North American people...On the other hand, if you are driving fast enough, you can as fast as Via train From Toronto to Montreal about 120km/h
yep - for whatever reason our trains are lame in North America - the European and Asian trains are the cat's ass .. have ridden the ICE in Germany and the Shinkansen
i know eurostar is gr8, really fast, hi-tech and fortunatly ON TIME
but still Our North American trains is MORE powerful, build stronger, longuest and they KICK-ASS any trains , anytime ( for example european's trains can work during lot of winterstorms or when its -40 celcius outside ?? NIERTZ NIERTZ NIERTZ
we are maybe poor in trains service but we ROCK coz our locomotive are undestructible
I'm afraid our North American trains are NOT more powerful. Via Rail's P42DC locomotive you show here produces 4,250 HP (or 3,170 KW) but is clearly outclassed by the Class 373, which powers Eurostar and produces around 18,000 HP (or up to 12 MW). North American locomotives also have competition on the temperature front: the version of the Siemens Velaro (aka the German ICE) to be used in Russia, which has a range of -50C to +40C.
That it went like 100 miles an hour or so. Well it was back in Jan 2002, I woke up in Quebec and started to listen to U2 the best of 1980, 1990. It was the closet thing to Europe. LOL

Can anyone answer this curious doubt of mine? Why a developed country like Canada has no electric locomotives? Is it because you guys have cheap gas?

Thanks. Also I think it would be a damn big budget, to electrify the lines in world's second largest country, since the distances are huge.

Something is wrong there, that train is going west, not east, so it would be to Toronto, from Montreal, right? GOTCHA!!!

are you sure that VIA trains can go up to 90mph. That'a about 144km/h and at that speed we can get stopped by the OPP on the highways.

how fast can VIA Rail trains travel between Montreal and Toronto, and how fast can trains travel going from Winnepeg to Churchill Manitoba?
AZZ124567 4 years ago
azz1234567=in average of 90 mph in rural section or 20/30 in cities betwen t.o and mtl
but between winnipeg to churchill i think its 40-50 mph ( dont know exactly, coz i never take this train)
patmix 4 years ago
it goes around 50-80 mph. I took that one once. It has to slow down alot
74mtondreau 3 years ago
it does 100mph quite a bit of the time on this route
babstude 3 years ago
Yes a Via Rail train's top speed on any route is 100 MPH. (160 KPH) Including this route. (The CN Kingston sub.)
