i was blown away in 1995 the first time i played doom with an awe32 card. It was a huge upgrade for pc gamers back 15 years ago to get a sound card that supported wavetable synthesis
well adlib is more "doomish". of course this can be a general midi, but some music tracks sound much better with adlib. That's why I like it. The feeling is not so good when hearing it on general midi. I'm for adlib.
Adlib is the best, its the most original, and it had a dark sound that General Midi never can, i never thought General Midi sounded, good, at maps like E1M4, Adlib really shows a dark tone, Midi always sounds cheerful, it fits Doom being played on Skulltag online, but not otherwise. XP
OPL hands down, at least the guitars don't sound like weird funnel noises like the MS softsynth. Roland SC-55 dominates both though, and that was the original hardware used by Bob to compose the soundtrack.
I think either one sounds like crap. But the Adlib always sounds poor in these types of games because the music is written for MIDI and then it is converted to Adlib by the game-engine on the fly. If the music were designed for AdLib to begin with, it would sound a lot better. Playing MIDI music on an AdLib is just not taking full advantage of its abilities.
00:53 That music just sends chills down my spine...That's KICK ASS music right there. That's the music that should be playing if a zombie apocalypse ever happens.
I'm pretty sure Dosbox just uses the default midi device that's configured in the Windows control panel. If you have one of the more fancy soundcards with programmable wavetables I'm sure you could get something totally awesome out of this game (and any game that uses MIDI, really)

I dunno, Adlib is always gonna be how I remember Doom's soundtrack. It's what I knew growing up!

The adlib music sounded creepier, it was the music I had on Doom when I was young and won't ever forget.

@nekokonekosama yeah, but doncha think special software could pull off a "jury rig" of the midi wavetable though?
