God to think how much more interesting this could have been if we didn't have to waste air space listening to Paul Rodregez desperately try to be funny.
Religion.. I learned years ago not to try and have a reasonable debate with people that believe in an imaginary guy that created everything. Waste of time, just let the ignorant people believe what they want.
@tmxman23 haha yeah maybe it is a waste of time... or maybe you're just too uneducated to even construct a "reasonable" debate since you obviously don't understand the rules of logic or grammar. We both know the truth. Go to college and get back to me on that one dumbfuck. rofl
@shananagans5 Also a quick note, you mention how the government just shifts it around. thats true but play a game of monoply with limited money, you will see for one to be rich the other has to be poor and when you concentrate the wealth to such a degree you end up with many poor and few rich. You can't get away from this fact
@shananagans5 This simply isn't the case, that people that accept welfare will never work because they dont have motivation. I live in australia, thats not the case, its not the case in new zealand or any country actually.
you must have such a low view of people in your country to make this assumption because everywhere there is a welfare system, they don't see your concerns.
your concerns around welfare seem to be completely unfounded
@shandcunt Of course most people in America either forget or just don't know that the majority of the welfare of our country goes to the rich people, not the poor.
i belive that if you work you should have a liveable amount of money its as simple as that... then thos people who find it hard to make it up the levels still have the needs that all humans have. im not for limiting the amount of money you can make (so theres still a reward for hard work) but i im for makeing sure that the governmnet dosent bale comperines out so the CEOs can have a chrismas bonuns while there workers are being layed of...
Wow, middle class Americans had house cleaners? Are you kidding me? I wonder what happened to them when the "recession" happened. I live in Canada, and to think that having the conversation that was had on this show is crazy. No one up here would consider this as a reality at all. Maids? Those people work in hotels...
for fuck sakes the conseveritive miss the ponit... people in the sevice indersty should be paid a fair amount of money thats the bottem line... so if the price of liveing works out to be say $230aweek (exsample) thos in theses jibs should be able to get paid what the need if they work hard... which most of them do
@sxcboy4u Those are not career type jobs. That is something you get while you are in school or working toward something better. If you force a min wage there is less motivation for people to strive for something better. It also cuts out people that are totally unskilled. You have to start somewhere. Why should you make someone comfortable in a low level job when it reduces the chances of them to continue to improve themselves and find out how capable they truly are? Min wage is a trap.
@shananagans5 oh come on like that argerment even makes sence... no one wants to work thos jobs they want to move up but while they are in those jobs they should be paid a fair wage that they can live on
@sxcboy4u Hunger is a strong motivator. It's like gov programs. Make them comfortable and they don't make an effort to get out of the situation. Some do but many don't.
@shananagans5 you know what im not even going to have a convostation with you cause your a red neck.... your fine with people who have jobs people who arnt lazy but have jobs to go hungery... your a hillbilly red reck dick head...
@shananagans5 in college... you mean you went to collage and your still a reck neck who belives that working people shouldnt have a liveable min wage.... maybe you servived maybe all your mates did to but if u acteraly look at the numbers alot of people arnt as lucky as u are
@sxcboy4u You can't force an artifical value on someones labor. If you have no skill that allows you to demand more for the work you do there are plenty willing and able to take your place. If I am forced to pay $20/hr to hire someone, I will hire someone that is skilled and worth $20/hr. Then you are left out with no job at all. It's the free market. You get what your labor is worth. You don't understand this and you call me a redneck?
@shananagans5 no im in full agreement with that your should beable to hire anyone you want and fire someone for just cause if you feel like you need to. what i dont understand is how an educatied person such as your self belives that people who work the ares off in entry level jobs to feed them selfs and familiys should not be paid a fair liveable wage. and then when people have what the need then they can start buliding them selfs up to higher paying jobs. thats why i call u a hillbilly
@sxcboy4u I believed that when I was your age. I think anyone with a heart does and it would be wonderfull if it worked but it doesn't. Some people try but most quit as soon as they are minimally comfortable. I did a 2 yr internship working with the poor and I saw it first hand over & over & over again.
When they work & advance on their own merits they see that they can do it and their motivation and self worth goes up. It sounds cruel but in the long run that works better for people overall.
@shananagans5 im not sure if anyone is asking you to hire anyone you dont want to. people who work should get paid a fair wage that allows them all their needs. a free market will shift jobs to other countrys who can do them for cheeper. people will lose jobs and then youll be bitching that their lazy. conseveritives cant have it both ways they cant say they want their jobs to stay in the country while they want a free market. im such a socialist and pretty much proud of it.
@sxcboy4u It's like the welfare trap. Give them enough to just eek by and they will never start working because their first job isn't going to pay more than what they are given. They might have to work 2 or 3 yrs before they are better off by working so instead they stay on welfare their entire lives hardly getting by.
They just will not make the leap of working for a while without a gain even though in the long run they will be far better off. Liberals mean well, but you gotta think long run
@shananagans5 its ture that some people do that but most people on walfare dont want to be on welfare but they cant find jobs. ive always found it amazing that conseritives bitch and complain on one hand that to many people dont have jobs and then vote in people who wont directly provide jobs in the encomany. example if the government put money in to buliding schools and inferstucture and roads) ectit would prodive jobs and simerlate the ecomany.
@sxcboy4u When the gov spends money it's not a net gain. They are taking from some to employ the others. Its like taking money from one pocket and puting in another. Your right pocket might be better off but your left pocket is missing a 20. You have to add something to the economy to be better off. Gov just moves it around.
@sxcboy4u The person I lay off so I will not notice the 20 thats gone every day will notice it. That would be the job lost for the one created by the gov.
@shananagans5 Or the 10,000 that were laid off after the company received millions of extra dollars in tax write-offs. Don't forget about that when you try to make your point. Oh wait, you wouldn't want to do that as it completely counteracts what you're trying to say. Sorry man, I forgot when you're talking to a republican that facts get in the way.
I think the one point that they did not touch on is the simple fact that a lot corporations have and continue to make record profits and continue to pay their employees slave wages.
If staying faithful to true capitalism the banks in england shouldn't have been bailed out by the govermnent instead the most efficient and strongest would come back, that wasn't the case. They are only capitalists when it suits them to make money until they fuck it up.
with captialism, those who are willing to work get theirs, those who arent dont. true the system does have its flaws like we have discussed. in communism everyone gets paid, no matter what you have done and thats not fair. i have went to college for 8 years and became a doctor, i get paid the same as some imigrant working on a production line? i dont want the goverment in every part of my life.
If you increase wages you increase prices of products, then the whole wheel turns and we are back where we started. Its called capitalism. If everyone makes the same no matter what your education its called communism. Its not fair that I have a college degree and make as much as an uneducated worker who did not work to get where i am. Thats the wonderful thing about capitalism, Only the strong survive! God bless america! Wake up liberals!!
wouldnt the strong be able to be prideful instead of wealthy?-there are people like paris hilton who get rich for crap-they dont do anything and have more money than you do-right?-shouldnt the strong already know something that sophmores in high school already know?-just because the class is switched its still the same thing-the strong should also not ask somebody to favor a country and go against his teachings
All I hear is Blah, blah, blah, capitalism blah, blah blah. Capitalism run a muck with the corporations at the helm of the ship is no better then communism. The only difference is the corporations dictate the wages instead of the government. Wake up Republicans!!
If some mexican that just ran across the border is going to make as much as I am as a doctor then what pushes me to become a doctor? There is no strive for success. Even China is a capitalist goverment. The big fish eat the little fish. The funny thing about liberals are that they are the lazy poor people that dont want to work and want the high wages of the hard working republicans. Oh yeah, they want to kill babies too. Oh wait, i forgot, its called a womans "choice." My bad!
that defense of capitalism is reasonable if you suppose that the difference in wages means actual difference in effort put into something, but it's not always like that
you actually make better professionals when they study something out of pure interest for knowledge, not of money, that just makes every guy with a decent wage a greedy prick, you only do your job well enough to keep getting payed
i can agree with that, and there are lucky few who slip through the system and get rich by chance, that gives capitalism a bad name. But there are those to despise capitalism, Michael Moore, but make millions because of it selling his videos. If cuba is so great, LIVE THERE!!! how can he curse capitalism when its made him a millionare? wake up and enter reality. every system has its flaws.
don't forget the ones born rich. and also, just because the ones appealing to an alternative seem contradictory, doesn't mean the reasoning behind it is any less valid. And the "every system has its flaws" thing is pretty obvious, so you should focus on how it is that there's less flaws
those born rich are the ones that include the lucky few but thats the good thing about capitalism, they can loose it just as quick as they gain it. capitalism has stood the test of time, no other system has. that should be proof enough. all major countries have gone to captialism, ,even the ones that claim communism i.e. china. communism is a great idea but it will never work. it takes a perfect person for it to work, show me a perfect person.

About Maher's point about people starting off at a high place in life - what usually happens there is you have to work really hard to maintain that level, otherwise you plummet.
So wherever you start, there's probably going to be some hard work involved.
Fair point, however you have to understand that here we have one group (the ones doing the hiring) have ALL the leverage... the other group really has no choice, therefore the amount agreed upon is consensual yes but hardly fair- it's bound to be more suited to the person with the leverage. When you have a large group of people who are desperate, it means they HAVE to accept WHATEVER is offered no matter how low or unfair they think it is because there is always someone else to the job- see?
"got to school, get a real job." First off, what you define as "real"... isn't any legal thing that requires you to do work and receive a steady wage a REAL job?
You know, you make that sound so easy, but unfortunately, the REAL world isn't that way..
I don't know about you all, but I love how the pig capitalist Christian is sickened when Ehrenreich says there should be a national wage cap on the rich.
Conservatives carry a cross, but their true religion is always, always, always money.
Don't let christians scare you from christianity, no one claims to be perfect as a matter of fact my church is full of hypocrites so come on down we have room for one more.
Bill Maher isn't an atheist, he's an agnostic as he doesn't know nor rejects divine intelligence. But he hates all religion equally and views it as poisonous to socio-cultural progress... as any rational person does.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
judjing by what you say I quess you believe that hatred is a good thing. I guess you also believe Albert Einstein was irrational for believing in God as well as Steven Hawking
You can be an atheist and an agnostic, they aren't mutually exclusive. Being an agnostic simply means you don't believe it's possible to know for sure. Being an atheist simply means you lack do not believe in a god. So someone "in the middle" who isn't sure, does not believe in god. After all, if they were sure they believed in a god, they would be a theist.
@Steven2480 Without worship of the Olympians, there would have been no Greek democracy, nor Roman republic. Race can't be changed, but religion is a choice. The people of Europe that the Romans conquered, such as the Germanic tribes, could change their religion to that of Rome and receive citizenship -- including every right of a native born Roman except service in the Senate (Most Romans could never hope for that). Religion hasn't done all bad, its done some good. Rational people admit that.
@Steven2480 haha yeah and Hitler was so beneficial to social progress wasn't he? Yeah I agree religion sux. Never mind the reason we still have all the philosophical writing from ancient Greeks is because the church preserved them over the centuries. But since you obviously have the logic and historical education of a two year old, your tiny brain can't possibly grasp this simple concept. fucktard :-)))) lol lalala
I miss this show. I'd argue that because Maher had a wider variety of guests, the show didn't completely revolve around his overinflated ego the way it does now on "Realtime."
Why is the quality of this video so much better than all of the previous videos. Just curious... Was this the point where you switched from VHS to CD?
I'm all for that maximum wage! And how about Bush not getting anything for being President since he's already rich and didn't earn a dime while he was in office. Hell, he ought to be paying us!
the dude in the baseball cap is legendary stand up comedian paul rodriguez and is one of the nicest comedians, gives back to the community more than other premadonna stand ups.

@Steven2480 Theism is when you believe in a certain religous dogma, if you don't believe in a particular religous dogma you are A-theist.
questions of knowledge are dealt with by gnostic/a-gnostic and everyone is either a-gnostic + a-theist or a-gnostic + theist
its a common misconception; "Im not atheist, i jst dont believe any religous claims"
"Im not atheist" = you are a Theist, u believe a religous claim
"i just dont believe any religous claims" = Not a theist or A-THEIST

Frank Turek made a brilliant point. Ooh... that one burned about consenting adults.
highwind8124 2 years ago
Fair point, however you have to understand that here we have one group (the ones doing the hiring) have ALL the leverage... the other group really has no choice, therefore the amount agreed upon is consensual yes but hardly fair- it's bound to be more suited to the person with the leverage. When you have a large group of people who are desperate, it means they HAVE to accept WHATEVER is offered no matter how low or unfair they think it is because there is always someone else to the job- see?

go to school, get a real job. Or at the very least learn a trade or something
Ironzealot7531 3 years ago
"got to school, get a real job." First off, what you define as "real"... isn't any legal thing that requires you to do work and receive a steady wage a REAL job?
You know, you make that sound so easy, but unfortunately, the REAL world isn't that way..
thepiper2112 3 years ago 18
how are these people supposed to pay for school?
MitchL17 2 years ago
ever heard of student loans
or they can go to a community college part time while working
they have plenty of options
Ironzealot7531 2 years ago
But then they are screwed afterwards cuz they cant afford 2 pay the loans back. Its not that easy.

Yes! I jumped almost out of the couch. Had the sound a bit high, and watching it late at night. Thinking who the fuck is calling now? Ha ha!

I don't know about you all, but I love how the pig capitalist Christian is sickened when Ehrenreich says there should be a national wage cap on the rich.
Conservatives carry a cross, but their true religion is always, always, always money.

i agree completely.

Don't let christians scare you from christianity, no one claims to be perfect as a matter of fact my church is full of hypocrites so come on down we have room for one more.

I don't need to be scared from religion... it's simply silly, boring, and childish.

Bill Maher isn't just an atheist, he is militant and intolerant towards all theist especially Christians, Dave did a great job responding
78TAse 3 years ago
Bill Maher isn't an atheist, he's an agnostic as he doesn't know nor rejects divine intelligence. But he hates all religion equally and views it as poisonous to socio-cultural progress... as any rational person does.

judjing by what you say I quess you believe that hatred is a good thing. I guess you also believe Albert Einstein was irrational for believing in God as well as Steven Hawking
78TAse 3 years ago
Hawking is questionable.
Einstein did not believe in a personal God. A very different account apart from the realm of human sacrifices and their subsequent resurrection.
sovpwrsupreme 3 years ago
Einstein believed in God as a first cause, and the basis for everything
78TAse 3 years ago
Yes, however a deistic perspective and a theistic one are two very different ideological ideas.
sovpwrsupreme 3 years ago 4
You can be an atheist and an agnostic, they aren't mutually exclusive. Being an agnostic simply means you don't believe it's possible to know for sure. Being an atheist simply means you lack do not believe in a god. So someone "in the middle" who isn't sure, does not believe in god. After all, if they were sure they believed in a god, they would be a theist.

@Steven2480
I don't think one has to hate religion to be rational, one just has to forget about it.
Maverick6429 1 year ago
@Steven2480 Without worship of the Olympians, there would have been no Greek democracy, nor Roman republic. Race can't be changed, but religion is a choice. The people of Europe that the Romans conquered, such as the Germanic tribes, could change their religion to that of Rome and receive citizenship -- including every right of a native born Roman except service in the Senate (Most Romans could never hope for that). Religion hasn't done all bad, its done some good. Rational people admit that.

@Steven2480 i totally agree, and i believe in jesus haha

@Steven2480 haha yeah and Hitler was so beneficial to social progress wasn't he? Yeah I agree religion sux. Never mind the reason we still have all the philosophical writing from ancient Greeks is because the church preserved them over the centuries. But since you obviously have the logic and historical education of a two year old, your tiny brain can't possibly grasp this simple concept. fucktard :-)))) lol lalala

I miss this show. I'd argue that because Maher had a wider variety of guests, the show didn't completely revolve around his overinflated ego the way it does now on "Realtime."

he's a funny guy, and you would think due to the plight of the common latino worker that he would want to treat a subject that concerns them with some type of tact.
