Im a Kiwi and have been living in Newcastle for the past year. Its a fantastic place and have enjoyed every minute. The Geordies are good people like most of Kiwis. Mark Knofler and Dire Staights rock. WHY AYE MAN!
Why aye man! I can say that cuz i'm a goerdie Knopfler is a legend and a million times better than our current Geordie music representative Cheryl Cole
Shear brilliance. The lyrics just roll along, so much light and shade in this song. The subtleties of the the guitar playing with the backing, beautifully mixed.
Really great vidéo :) Look like it's this John Isley from the old dire straits times who play bass guitar and the same guy than in the on every streets tour who plays saxophone :)
and Geordie dialect is said to originate from Welsh/Scandinavian of sorts...NOT Scottish like alot of people think...Welsh (Cymru) once spread throughout the whole of Britain for the Cymru are the only true indigeneous folk in all of United Kingdom!! Evryone else descends from the invaders !
when the Cymru were rounded up 2 live in wot's now 'wales' there were some who managed 2 remain in the far north east...these folk gave lend to the modern 'geordie 'accent along with a mix from the viking invaders..

A Geordie is a shell suit wearing Bumpkin from Newcastle England that live of giro benefit, race pigeons and worship a man called Mike Ashly. Sting is a Geordie, says it all really.

Why aye man, pronounced to sound something like "wye eye mon" is indeed a typical Geordie (Northeastern England) greeting. It means nothing more than hello or how are you doing?
'Why aye, man' is a term we use in the North east of England (Newcastle and Sunderland) and it really just means 'yeah, of course'. Its just a way of saying 'yeah' but with more emphasis. It is usually said with a bit of character and is friendly or jokey. It is used regularly in everyday language. The term isnt used anywhere else in Britain. There are many other terms used in North East English language that are not used anywhere else. Hope this helps marra.
Brilliant song from a brilliant album... hope Markie does "You Don't Know You're Born" live soon, I saw him do "Marbletown" last week when he was in Vancouver
Yes, Marbletown live is great, I saw it in Prague...You don´t know your´re born is also great song (has a special feeling) ...I really hope that there will be another tour SOON....
it a geordie sayin why aye man its not a scottish 1i shud knaa cos im a geordie like and anyway he says geordieland in the song and thats newcastle not scotland like
I was on a Knopfler's concert just the other week and they played this, the shouts sounded great live. Not to even mentioned Mark's unbelieveable playing, the band consisted of master musicians alike.
Yes, he is. If you like the way he plays really recomend you the Romeo and Juliet from the Mandelas concert where, although most of the versions recorded are a bit cut, Chris White playing is something really great.
The song is pure excitement - building rhythm, Mark's deep and beautiful voice, his soaring lyric solos, strong men's harmony, tight instrumentation, the great ballad of his upbringing and the hearty Scottish greeting, "Wae aye man!" Fabulous. Thanks.
"Why Aye man" is not a Scottish saying, it is a Geordie one. In case you dont know, Geordies are people from the city of Newcastle which is in the north east of England, not Scotland and is mentioned in this song along with the river that flows through it the **TYNE**. Not to mention this song is being sung by two men from Newcastle.
Can you tell me the German reference in the song? My mum is from Geordie land I think. Hartlepool..on the coast. Anyways she married my german father and divorced later in life and I am just trying to piece together puzzle pieces for my own life story. Im just wondering if there is any connection in the song with my family history. Germans in England at that time?
Hi, just to let you know, Hartlepool is near to Newcastle (about 35 miles away) but this does not make her a Geordie. It makes her a Monkey Hanger. A Geordie is someone from the Newcastle/Tyneside area and can even be stretched to South East Northumberland and parts of Durham at a push. Get a map and have a look.
The German reference in this song is due to the fact that in the 1980's thousands of British workers were forced to go to Germany in search of work because there was none in the UK.
Sorry. I did a random google search and stupidly thought I was educated about Georgies. Thank you for correcting me and all the other people who want to speak without enough knowledge ;-)

Yes. You can see John Illsley on bass, Danny Cummings (Percussion on every streat tour) Guy Fletcher (Keyboard in DS since BIA) Chris White (SAX since BIA) On second guitar it's Robbie Mcintosh from the pretenders. Jools Holland did
some songs in the show on the piano. (Not this tough)

pedro111nufc 3 years ago
The song is a bit of a story, about builders leaving Newcastle to find work in Germany, becuase of unemployment in the 1980s.
The references are clearly not of people going to Newcastle, but reluctantly leaving it behind.
It's pretty much like the story of the TV series "Auf Weidersehn Pet" and was used as the theme to the third series.

Anyways, love the guy and his music.
I love that they've increased the tempo of the song on this version.

love this ballad. A song for the constructionman. Why can't the U.S. workingman have a song like this?

Because Mark Knopfler was born over here in Scotland ... only he could get away with this song. Everyone else would be far too tactless, lol.

Nice. This is more or less dire straits. John Illsley on the bass. (Mark and John are the only two that have been on all dire staits records.)
Danny Cummings on drum, chris white, and guy fletcher are also there from Dire Straits. Second guitar is Robbie McIntosh (from pretenders) A nice concert is was. A charity gig for childrens trust.
Recorded by channel4 on Shepards bush in london in aug 2002.
But I have not seen anything else than this, and some clips was for a Mark Knopfler video.
