  • Im a Kiwi and have been living in Newcastle for the past year. Its a fantastic place and have enjoyed every minute. The Geordies are good people like most of Kiwis. Mark Knofler and Dire Staights rock. WHY AYE MAN!

  • Why aye man! I can say that cuz i'm a goerdie Knopfler is a legend and a million times better than our current Geordie music representative Cheryl Cole

  • Shear brilliance. The lyrics just roll along, so much light and shade in this song. The subtleties of the the guitar playing with the backing, beautifully mixed.

  • Seen KTGC tour in Philly GREAT jam session with Mark, the fiddle and the stand up bass

  • Really great vidéo :) Look like it's this John Isley from the old dire straits times who play bass guitar and the same guy than in the on every streets tour who plays saxophone :)

  • I love this song. Mark does a great job as always. Nadine

  • Alright, I admit that was a no-brainer, but do you think they teach us History or Geography here In the US?

I just learned England is not a country occupied by France....and I learned that by watching The Holy Grail...

    Knig-its! Right?

  • Sometimes I miss my River time?

    But your my pretty Fraulien..

Being half German and half US cowgirl I really like these lyrics..

  • my river tyne! :p

  • Rive tyne? Aye Man! Where would that be? I'll be packing me bags ..See? I can too speak Scottish!

    Yip-pee-ki-O! To you!...smile

  • Not Scotland, England. The river Tyne runs through Newcastle, Mark Knopfler's home town.

And not Scottish, Geordie. Which is the name of people originating from that area and also of the dialect spoken by the locals.

  • and Geordie dialect is said to originate from Welsh/Scandinavian of sorts...NOT Scottish like alot of people think...Welsh (Cymru) once spread throughout the whole of Britain for the Cymru are the only true indigeneous folk in all of United Kingdom!! Evryone else descends from the invaders !

  • when the Cymru were rounded up 2 live in wot's now 'wales' there were some who managed 2 remain in the far north east...these folk gave lend to the modern 'geordie 'accent along with a mix from the viking invaders..

  • mk rules!

  • german tards are wunderschön:D

  • "german tards"? Freudian slip of sorts, eh?

How about "tarts"? Interesting deutsche lassies?

DAGS for [lyrics why aye] and you'll see the lot.

  • I love this like a fat boy loves ice cream.

  • How shit is this.... dreadful lyrics...turgid knopfler fayre..really bad...pity all the geordies didnt stay in germany. What spade work did mr dire do to write this..watch repeats of auf weidersen...laughable.

  • you make me laughing..really

  • Are you happier for having posted this dreck?

  • Not a Knopfler fan then...

  • es gibt keinen besseren

  • best guitarist ever 2 pluck strings imo

  • Err, born in Glasgow but raised in Newcastle from a very young age.

    Look it up man ffs.

  • He was born over the border and was brought up here in newcastle,in my eyes he`s a geordie

  • Stop takin shite he's pure jock!!!

  • MK never disappoints, no matter who he works with- Bravo!

  • brilliant man, musician,'n' alround greta human being! alway's luv tha Knopf!

  • Wish i could of gone to see these guys, love Dire Straits and love Marks song writing.Watching this vid, the live must have been brilliant.I have been a fan of DS and MK since the end of the 80's and i am only 23 years old.

  • Live show i mean.

  • One of the better songs ever written

  • I love this song, and it's a shame that some people use these comment boxes to be abusive and rant obscenities. The series that had this song as it's theme tune was one of the greatest ever on TV. I am not a Geordie, and therefore not biased, but even if I was, I wouldn't stoop so knuckle draggingly low as to post such drivel.

  • that's a bit harsh don't ya think? if thats what you think of geordie's then thats ur opinion, though wrong. but don't insult mark knopfler and everyone else who watches this great vid by posting such rubbish.

  • no wonder folk like you have ya head punched in!

  • WHY AYE MAN!!!

  • Why aye man, official song of Wah too mah hey go flaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I know it makes no sense, only a car ful of people will understand this.... You know who you are... OXINUMPUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ...why aye man!!!

  • great song!!!!

  • what is geordie? no idead sorry

  • geordie is a term for someone from newcastle, england

  • ay ya still a geordie if yoove lived in canada for 27 years but were born in tha North East marra? By the way our Jimmy still rocks crocadile shoes and all.

  • sorry to point this out as im a geordie myself but if thats rite geordielass then that means if he was born in glasgow then moved to newcstle when he was 9 then by the same token he is a jock is he not.?

  • makes me proud to be a Geordie when you hear music be these legends

  • theres no such thing as semi-geordie

  • is called being from South Sheilds!

  • Yep It's John

  • im a semi-geordie (suderland) and why aye man means i agree

  • erman beer is chemical free!:D great great song

  • meravigliosa versione come già di per se lo è in versione studio da brividi il video da 2min e 50 a 3 min e 20 e la coda finale da 4min e 30 alla fine

  • Yes it was.

  • Got wor tools an wor workin gear and humped it aal from newcastle to here!

    Class.

  • If it corrects me this was the opening theme to Auf widersain pet was it not?

  • The chorus ("wye eye, wye eye, wye eye man")was used at the end of episodes for series 3

  • why aye man is the way to spell it

  • Oh, sorry about that. What a clanger i must have dropped. Silly me. Wye Aye Man!

  • Beautiful Song...

Why aye man, pronounced to sound something like "wye eye mon" is indeed a typical Geordie (Northeastern England) greeting. It means nothing more than hello or how are you doing?

  • It doesn't mean hello or how are you. It simply means yes or I agree with you.

  • What does it mean, in Italian (or other...) "Why Aye Man"? Great Music...

  • 'Why aye, man' is a term we use in the North east of England (Newcastle and Sunderland) and it really just means 'yeah, of course'. Its just a way of saying 'yeah' but with more emphasis. It is usually said with a bit of character and is friendly or jokey. It is used regularly in everyday language. The term isnt used anywhere else in Britain. There are many other terms used in North East English language that are not used anywhere else. Hope this helps marra.

  • are you a mackem?

  • Love this song!! and love Jimmy Nail gooning around in the background!

  • Brilliant song from a brilliant album... hope Markie does "You Don't Know You're Born" live soon, I saw him do "Marbletown" last week when he was in Vancouver

  • Yes, Marbletown live is great, I saw it in Prague...You don´t know your´re born is also great song (has a special feeling) ...I really hope that there will be another tour SOON....

  • just plain musical genius!

  • Oh, I like those lyrics!

So funny... "we keep our spirit levels high"

  • Best mark for Mr Knopfler !

  • One of the best songs of Mark's solo career..Just beautiful, I love the end...Thanks for posting it....

  • When was this?

  • awesomme. nearly the best f***ing guitar palyer I know

  • Great...

  • this was the theme tune to auf wiedersehen pet series 3

  • jimmy nail is jim.legendary brickie from auf wiedersehn pet

  • I was on a Knopfler's concert just the other week and they played this, the shouts sounded great live. Not to even mentioned Mark's unbelieveable playing, the band consisted of master musicians alike.

  • Thanks...

but who is Jim? The guy that is also singing the Backings?

  • Is it Chris White at the Saxophone ?^^

  • Yep, I reckon it is! Also singing backing vocals and looking like he's enjoying himself!

  • Yes, he is. If you like the way he plays really recomend you the Romeo and Juliet from the Mandelas concert where, although most of the versions recorded are a bit cut, Chris White playing is something really great.

  • Beautiful song

  • how can that be scottish? ya radge packet!

  • The song is pure excitement - building rhythm, Mark's deep and beautiful voice, his soaring lyric solos, strong men's harmony, tight instrumentation, the great ballad of his upbringing and the hearty Scottish greeting, "Wae aye man!" Fabulous. Thanks.

  • Scottish?

  • What you on about?

  • "Why Aye man" is not a Scottish saying, it is a Geordie one. In case you dont know, Geordies are people from the city of Newcastle which is in the north east of England, not Scotland and is mentioned in this song along with the river that flows through it the **TYNE**. Not to mention this song is being sung by two men from Newcastle.

  • Can you tell me the German reference in the song? My mum is from Geordie land I think. Hartlepool..on the coast. Anyways she married my german father and divorced later in life and I am just trying to piece together puzzle pieces for my own life story. Im just wondering if there is any connection in the song with my family history. Germans in England at that time?

  • Hi, just to let you know, Hartlepool is near to Newcastle (about 35 miles away) but this does not make her a Geordie. It makes her a Monkey Hanger. A Geordie is someone from the Newcastle/Tyneside area and can even be stretched to South East Northumberland and parts of Durham at a push. Get a map and have a look.

The German reference in this song is due to the fact that in the 1980's thousands of British workers were forced to go to Germany in search of work because there was none in the UK.

  • The song is a bit of a story, about builders leaving Newcastle to find work in Germany, becuase of unemployment in the 1980s.

The references are clearly not of people going to Newcastle, but reluctantly leaving it behind.

It's pretty much like the story of the TV series "Auf Weidersehn Pet" and was used as the theme to the third series.

  • pedro111nufc,

Sorry. I did a random google search and stupidly thought I was educated about Georgies. Thank you for correcting me and all the other people who want to speak without enough knowledge ;-)

  • No problem mate, but its GeorDies not GeorGies.

Maybe you did that for a laugh eh?

  • I think this is one of my favorite Mark Knopfler songs. Thanks for the great post.

  • as a geordie lad living in germany this tune is propa special for me, I am also blown away by the fact that shit loads of non brits also know this record. class...

  • very good song, excellent guitar player and singer, respect for mr Knopfler. Who's the guy with the man boobs?

  • ain't he the dude from Auf Weidersein Pet? However u spell it.

  • the guy with the Moobs, is Jimmy Nail, him of Crocodile Shoes fame

  • Why aye man he's Jimmy Bradford but he's still a Geordie??????

  • Jimmy Nail, possibly not quite as famous as old MK himself - his " 'musical' career" was a total disaster

  • 'We had the back of Maggies hand' Absolute brilliant lyric, brilliant song. Gives me goose pimples every time I hear this. Brilliant link to the best tv programme ever

  • Yes. You can see John Illsley on bass, Danny Cummings (Percussion on every streat tour) Guy Fletcher (Keyboard in DS since BIA) Chris White (SAX since BIA) On second guitar it's Robbie Mcintosh from the pretenders. Jools Holland did

some songs in the show on the piano. (Not this tough)

  • German beer is chemical free, german is alright with me. Indeed. Great song by even greater artist. Long live Knopfler. Was on his consert couple years back and he was great.

  • Knopfler Brilliant, Nail ace !!!!

  • Grandioso Knopfler. Que madurez excelente y creativa que contagia a los temas, que los hace aún mas grandes, excelente versión. Y si encima aparece el Sr White, para que queremos más. Lujazo. Gracias por colgarlo.

  • its cool I dont understand why dont ave so talented musicians today like he?

    can anybody explain this?

  • Because todays (most famous) musicians are appreciated for their image rather than their talent. Or lack of talent.

  • A performance by Knopfler with more soul. Sometimes he seemes bored on stage.

Anyways, love the guy and his music.

I love that they've increased the tempo of the song on this version.

  • Great song, does anyone know if this is available on DVD?

  • theres a version of is on mark knopflers album "The Ragpickers dream" its a wicked album, do get it

its two disk, and disk one is all live, with this particular video on.

  • I really like the end of the song. the saxophone thing in the end is great! awesome stuff!

  • love this ballad. A song for the constructionman. Why can't the U.S. workingman have a song like this?

  • Because Mark Knopfler was born over here in Scotland ... only he could get away with this song. Everyone else would be far too tactless, lol.

  • wey aye man.

  • tonight we'll drink the old town dry

  • HUMPED it all from Newcastle to here.

  • Glasgow born amd Geordie raised - it doesn't come any better !!!! Brilliant.
