oh the traveller ? i hope he is refering to the gypsy travellers :) bcause omg my people carried a very heavy load :( what with discrimination and hatred :( against my mumand dad and my people in general :( but anyway we survived :) and things are soo much better for gypsy`s now :) thank god :) my people suffered enough at the hands of society :(
This was always a great, but under-rated album. A great gatefold cover on textured board, and some of the best songs Ralph ever wrote. His next album, "Easy" was a let-down by comparison. Thankyou for posting.
love this song as it soo describes my daddy and grand daddy .. to romany gypsys ;) who did there fair share of travelling ;) until the world moved on and left the travellers behind ;( god bless there souls .... and r.i.p all travellers.... ;)
I got this as a "freebie" record when I was a very young DJ!
We couldn't play it on air because it was too long... so I took it home and fell into the wonderment of this tune. This is what the Moody Blues wished they could have written. Pure magic!
I agree this is a pretty good song, but I have moved on a bit since these old days and I would like to recommend to you Ralph's "Tickle on the Tum" songs which are for children and available on Youtube also. You will not be disappointed they are truly outstanding songs and totally iresistable. Please find and enjoy!
NO. wise up it is a product of its time , thousands of similar stuff was written in bedsits all over the country then and I suspect even now, this got published on the back of Streets of London otherwise you would never have heard it, sorry but it is bad even by the bad stander eds of this type of song. Best song ever written was Hamlet.
If you get a chance, I'd love it if you could download You Well Meaning Brought me Here(the title song, that is). In any case, thanks again for this fine posting.
Got a signed copy of this album, way back in 71. Saw him do this in Norwich[uk] What a privelige. Saw him in Boston[usa] in 84. Bout time I went to see him again
Great song from a great album by an under-rated singer songwriter. My dad bought this album for himself when it first came out. I have it in my record collection here in Finland nowadays.
I first heard and fell in love with this song when I was 17. I had ordered this album from UK, being a big fan of Ralph and unable to find his lps here. I was blown away by this song because I had just finished reading and rereading Siddhartha. Still beautiful after all these years...
Will have to google Siddhartha cause not sure what it is but have you read the words to Desiderata? yes McTell, Cohen, Dylan, Cat Stevens and many more great song writers and singers. Oh Herman Hesse's story about a boy called Siddhartha and his spitritual journey from the indian subcontinent at the time of Buddha, okay wiser now but still Athiest of my own choice.....
I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I first saw Ralph McTell at Monash University in Melbourne Australia in 1977. I was blown away by the gig, particularly two songs, Run Johnny Run for its sheer dexterity, and The Ferryman for its sheer beauty. However, I can't endorse The Ferryman's Buddhist view of life, (for all its beauty), because I'm a Christian, and Christ's forgiveness is more beautiful than anything (even this song!)
Does it really matter ? Christians, Buddists, Moslems. Only supposed to be ONE god, whatever they call him, Me, I'm athiest and don't believe but I can still appreciate these songs, whether McTell or Cohen Or Dylan, they may have changed their beliefs but mine have been athiest as long as I learned to decide for myself, please keep religion out of this just listen to the music and enjoy.... of I'm english but so called Christians tried to blow me to bits in London in '73 IRA bombs RC v the rest.
@rustino08 yes it is. Ralph made this song to my grandfather because his life was about survival. He was werry poor but he became one of the best platform drawers in the world. He died 2 years ago because of cancer;( He was my life. I love him and my uncle ralph...
@vicst87 I HAVE DONE SOME WORK ABOUT YOU, AND HAVE COME TOO THE CONCLUSION,THAT YOU ARE ONE BIG FAT FECKING LIAR. SO FECK OFF, AND TAKE YOUR FECKING LIES WITH YOU. STUPID FECKING WANKER!!!!!!!!!!!
@vicst87 sorry to hear that...ralph has a one off voice i remember as a child watching him on tv..i still play kenny the kangaroo to my 1 year old..he loves it..

I'd love to meet bedsitters who could compose a tune as subtle and complex as this one. And you say there were, and are, thousands, of them! Many of the chords are quite atypical for standard folk music of the time; and the overall tune is quite intricate. Incidentally, Ralph's real fame did not occur until the 1974 single version of 'Streets of London'. It was the 1969 album 'My Side of Your Window' that cemented his reputation.
what i like about this song is the imagery int he lyrics and the guitar playing. great production throughout. what we need is some videos for this, claudia, dancing doreen, genesis. this album is his sergeant pepper.
Prety much every track is his best work, a gerat album, you'll find 'streets of london' everywhere, but it's just a tiny pin-prick of what this guys has written. Dip in a try a basinful you'll be surprised 'cos he's very eclectic, but a great lyric writer and guitar player.

This was the first Ralph song I heard thirty odd years ago and I'm still hooked.
Too many good albums to recommend; try any one of them.
