This song is of Scottish origin about a Lady Jane Hamilton, wife of John VI, Earl of Cassillis. Who ran off with a Gypsy. The "Gypsies" were killed (except for one, who escaped) and Hamilton was imprisoned for the remainder of her life, dying in 1642. Her only crime was to fall in love with a Romany Gypsy. Sad.

Lily of the West (the ending) is really hard to find, the song was re-written I believe during the American Civil War changing alot of the lyrics. I got the lyrics and aproximate date in a college library...and it took me a couple of days in very dusty bookshelves.
