While this engine is of Penn Central lineage, the paint IS NOT PC. It started out as Penn Central 7824, a GP38 originally ordered for the PRSL. The PRSL cancelled the order and they went to the PC (It has the built out windshield for dual controls.) It became Conrail 7824 and did get blue paint. It then became P&LE 2041. Thats where it got painted black again. It became Conrail Lease 345 when the P&LE went bust. It then became AGLF 345, then NCYR 345 where it got Gulf and Ohio logos and the 345.
@nysw252 The painted out Gulf and Ohio Markings are what everyone is mistaking for painted out PC markings. They are not. Here is a link to this locomotive on rrpicturearchives. You can then click the links to photos that show this locomotive and how it evolved over time.

About a year ago I saw one of SQVR's locos rolling through Winder, GA on CSX's Abbeville sub (lashed up behind CSX power) and it looked a lot nicer than this one...maybe they're not THAT poor. :)
It's sort of ironically funny that they bothered to put a new horn on it but not to paint it. That definitely looks like PC paint and there are patches in the correct places to cover up PC logos.
But it is not the last PC painted locomotive, as there still are a handful of derelict GG-1s and E8s, some of which still bare PC logos and numbers. And there was a Geep working for a Kansas shortline that was still in PC black with Conrail patches, but I think it has finally been retired.
Awesome catch! That's so amazing to see Penn Central black this far past the demise of the PC. I might be wrong, but it looks like an ex-PC, ex-PRSL GP38 to me. The short front cab gives it away!
@fleecejackets no, i'm pretty sure it's ex-PC, because the "345" is covering up the patch over the "PC" logo. and look at some of the shots of the patches over the "PC", on some of them it's obvious that there was PC markings there at one time
@fleecejackets Its not PC black. This engine did make it to Conrail and it did get blue before being sold to the P&LE. Became P&LE 2041 ( where it got painted black again) CRL 345 AGLF 345 NCYR 345 then SQVR 345 The paint outs everyone think is of PC logos is actually paint outs of G&O logos.

Technically there are still many PC engines in use but most of them have been fully painted over by now by Conrail or other lines that have acquired them. Considering that GP38's and the famous SD40's that we see today were built in the 1960's and 70's, I doubt this is the only former PC loco in commercial use. But still, it's very interesting to still see one in black.
No the G&O is a holding company, like RailAmerica, this particular locomotive came from the Nash County railroad, which the G&O owns. But I did take a look and it is ex-PC. #345 was acquired by Sequatchie Valley back in March.
@TrainNut85 I don't think it was, they probably just put the "345" there because the "PC" logo was there originally. if this was ex-ICG, then it might have been ex-GM&O at one point.
@Jabbajawz4life if you want to see one, go to Jasper, Tennessee. that's where the SQVR is based. i'm surprised it came up this far, knowing CSX's ratio of foreign power to CSX power. did you like the horn at the end?

@Pellaz2112 their trackage and yard aren't that nice though. there's an old NS slug shell just sitting in the weeds there.

hand it over to strasburg, they could probably add that to their collection.

@rockguitarist946 I know that, what I'm saying is, BEFORE it was a Penn Central engine, it looks like it was originally a PRSL engine.

@fleecejackets IIRC the ex-PSRL GP38's had no dynamics brakes

Confirmed as an ex-Penn Central locomotive, looking at the way the number is on the tail end, must of been with the Gulf & Ohio at one time.
