Actually...(dumbed down here) nitrous is like condensed oxygen. When you spray you must add more fuel. Oxygen burns very HOT. Fuel acts as a cooling agent but not enough to combat large shots or long sprays. This in turn cooks things on the inside as well as burning the oil out of the cross-hatching of the cylinder walls. Metal on metal is NOT good!!!

Nitrous is a great thing when used properly. But as with all "power-adders" you have to pay to play. It will eventually break. Those naive enou

@animebrain132 You must be ignorant on how nitrous works. Nitrous works by cooling the air charge, making the air more dense allowing more into the cylinder. The point of having it is to make more power with cooler IATs, which is fairly critical on forced induction cars. It is a quick and easy way to make power with the correct supporting mods.

Nitrous is a compound of nitrogen and oxygen that rapidly decomposes to give off free oxygen, therefore the compound itself gives more oxygen to the cylider allowing more fuel to be burned for a given displacement. the cooling effect it has on the incoming air charge isn't the main usage of nitrous, Its just a very beneficial side effect of injection or any compressed gas. Thats how Nitrous works.

People still cant grasp what exactly nitrous is and does. Nitrous is an oxidizer. I cant believe the things Im readin in the comments " it reacts with oxygen. If this was the case all the guys using it to cool their intercoolers would be blowing themselves to hell. Nitrous has a similar effect to a turbo or supercharger..cooler and denser oxygen forced into the cylinders. Ive run N/A, Nitrous and now Im building up a turbo car, proof is on my profile.

I just finished a two year auto tech class. I thought it was flammable too, until I had to study it. You can look it up online if you wish.

I'm not reaaly sure why the backfire to start with? Is it mistimed spark plug firing, so the explosion ends up going out the exhaust pipe instead of driving the piston (thus the loud report you hear)?

Also I know racing video games have a "nitro boost" button to press or powerup to get on the track. What is real nitro boost? Is it mixed with gassoline in the engine? Does it replace the gassoline? Please explain.

Yes it is, Nitrous is much more volatile than gasoline.

Gasoline is really only flammable because it vaporizes at room temp. You can actually put out a fire with gasoline at a low enough temperature. Gasoline in it's natural state is a liquid, whereas Nitrous Oxide in it's natural state is a gas and reacts with oxygen. It's reaction with Oxygen is what makes it so volatile.

The extra power created is primarily due to increased oxygen density in the intake charge, however, the cooling effect during decompression from liquid to vapor state also adds to the effect.
