  • I remember watching Channels 4's 100 greatest adverts and thinking that when people voted for the Guinness advert (which came first), they thought they were actually voting for this one rather than the one that won. I think the Guinness - Surfer ad is so pretentious in comparison

  • best advert of the 90's for sure

  • This is, on so far many levels, one of, if not the best TV advert ever.

I remember this advert clearly, however, they also did a techno trance version that I caught just once, very late at night. It went in reverse and was faster. It's times like then you wish you recorded the alternative version........it was brilliant.

This advert never gets a mention in the all time top TV adverts ever and it's so good, it's a conspiracy it doesn't ...lol (I don't like the drink, btw, but the advert is top)

  • I remember this ad when I was grown up..

  • Thanks for adding that comment royal618 because 'Powers of Ten' is brilliant and maybe inspirational to this advert.

  • Conceptually original? I'm not so sure. Check out 'Powers of 10' by Ray and Charles Eames.

  • That's such a great example of recursion.

  • Ex-Guinness employee. A pint of standard Orange juice has more calories than a pint of standard Guinness. Fact. A pint of "light" OJ has slightly less, something like tropicana has more, something like the shit you get in supermarkets has shit loads more. Guinness is also red, not black.

  • Can't you back up your incorrect statement Catwoman316? Or have my figures disproved your factless based "opinion"? The information is freely available on the net, look it up if you don't believe me. I backed my comment up with facts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still best adverts ever created though are the Guinness ones.

  • just fantastic. truly. where can you get a hi res copy?

  • Go to your nearest Public Tavern, uphillcastle.

    *chuckles :)

  • God I could do with a very cold pint of 1664 right now, I'm melting here in this weather.

  • i think you mean 1759, 1664 was the year of a continental piss flavoured beverage which is quite contrary to this fine one!

  • Each to their own, I personally think Guinness tastes of vomit, but was my usual when I was about 18 for a while. Anyhow, both drinks can lead to a similar condition to Gynecomastia, ie gives men female like boobs. A chemical similar to the female hormone estrogen is in the pint, and worst still with Guinness, higher in calories than lager so is a false hope if seen to be an healthier drink. You drink what you want, I drink what I want, I am too old to argue which is the better drink.

  • @80sWereBest

you are actually wrong, Guinness has less calories than skimmed milk, lager and orange juice ;)

It's a misconception that Guinness has more calories.

  • @catwoman316 Draught guiness has 210 calories per pint. 10 pints and that is practically a woman's daily allowance. Wikipedia states guinness has 198 calories per pint. Lagers can have anything up from 150 depending on which one. I work in cosmetic surgery and obesity is one division. Don't believe me, research it on the net. Most sources state 210 kcal per pint or 7kcal per gram. You wouldn't down 6-10 pints of milk in 1 session would you? That has about 195 calories per pint.

  • @catwoman316 Where can you get the information to back up your comment? All the information on the net backs up what I have said but you say opposite to everyone else? Please explain if you can!!! If you can disprove all the facts on the net, I will hold my hands up and admit you are right. It's a simple request if you are right and I am wrong!!!

  • beautiful ad

  • abrahamWCE: Guinness using Boddington's ad strategy? Guinness - one of the most recognisable beer brands in the world? Black bottom, white head - being produced since mid 1700s? World famous Guinness copying Boddington's?... Hmmm, I doubt it.

  • This is one my favorite advert of all time!

  • the times when Guinness uses the Boddingtons ad strategy (Identifying the beer by the colored glass and the cream on the top), at the begining one could confuse this Guinness ad as a Boddingtons one (or viceversa).

  • Just fantastic!!

  • What a beautiful ad. Been on my mind for all these years. Thanks for posting!

  • the worst thing guinness ever did by dropping rutger hauer from their adverts

  • Rutgar Hauer is in this advert...

  • i love you. been trying to find this for ages

  • Best beer advert ever!

  • It's on the soundtrack of the movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." It's also been included on several collections of music from Bond films.

  • This clip is beautiful, I've seen it many times. I'd like to get a higher res version if possible. That song is called "We Have All The Time In The World" preformed by Louis Armstrong. It was written by John Barry (music) and Hal David (lyrics). That much I know, but does anyone know what album it is from?

  • "Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this song get to number 1 on the strength of this advert alone?"

It was already a hit back in the 60s when it was the theme to the Bond film OHMSS, but yes it was a hit in the 90s because of this advert.

  • Got to number 2 I think

  • i thought the Rutgar Hauer ads were the best ever!! i found one on here and that is it! i wish someone would post all of them. This was coool either way Guinness without a doubt make the most intelligent beer ads.

  • Rutgar Hauer is actually on the TV screen in the room in this advert.

  • I worked in the Guinness marketing dept. when this was created. The ad was officially entitled "Chain"

Note how Rutger Hauer's face is on the TV in the 'Tower of Babel'. (Slightly) interestingly, when the ad was repeated in 1995 we had to do a different edit without his face as Rutger's contract with Guinness had expired

  • Interesting stuff, thanks!

Is there a higher-definition version of this advert available?

  • Sublime.

It's a pity youTube's compression loses a lot of the detail.

    Superb ad nonetheless

  • Classic....
