I like the extra phrase but hate the shiny gold lid on the EE version...much prefer the dull brass of the normal one, so this mod makes for the perfect version in my opinion. Thanks guys!
Oh, it helps to carefully break the glue bonds at the top of the communicator after you remove the five screws. I have three other communicators and I like this one by far the best. It seems pretty well made, even has metal threaded nuts that the four screws in the battery cover screw into. I like it a lot. Thank you Diamond Select Toys for a great job and for all the people who posted stuff here about the jumper...
If you take it apart you'll see jumper J2 marked but it looks like there's no jumper there. Then if you take the circuit board off the communicator, on the underside there's a big blob of solder. I was able to use a small cutting pliers to snip the solder without using a solder gun and carefully peel the rest of the foil path in the area of the solder blob off. Don't leave any foil you break loose in there on the board. After removing that, I count 8 voice clips, + the opening & hail sounds.
Ok so which one to buy? The EE version or New Force Comics version which has it's original and then a 9th phrase one. And if EE has a gold cover, then what does the NFC have? Which one is the best and why?
I cut the jumper on my communicator and sure enough, I got the extra sound bytes. But I have a problem, the black wire came loose from the circuit board and I have no idea where it was/goes. Can someone tell where to solder it back on the circuit board?
the EE comm has a bright gold antenea and the body is shinner then the non EE. I have both and like both. but I will take the non EE and cut the j2 since I have 2 of each. thank you for the info.
Thanks for this vid. Just finished removing the solder link. Awesome stuff!
The internals are much better than my other communicator but the exterior and moire isn't as good, plus it lacks the metal joiner piece. Now, if I could combine them....
I bought the standard one first, and when the box said 20 sounds but mine didn't have it, I took it apart. I knew that J2 would unlock the extra sounds, but I didn't have a soldering iron to sort it. Bought the EE one, it still does not have 'over 20 sounds. FYI apparently this is a 'packaging error' by Diamond Select
For the record, the 'Enterprise this is Kirk' sound effect plays as the 'try me' sound on the standard version, but once you pull the tab out you don't hear it again
on the EE you will here enterprise this is kirk. also I think when they said 20 sounds I think they were counting all the chirps when you open the comm.......lol
well i have found the exclusives for 19.00 and thats a great deal are you a collector of star trek , i am i started back last summer . i have alot of phasers and now i am on the comm . DS is coming out with a tricorder next summer i think , it is posted on their website...lol cant wait ..lol
It seemed likely, given that it would be so much cheaper to make just one circuit and modify it to make the two types of toys. I have heard of such things being done before.
Also it says right on the circuit board, "OPEN J2: BRONZE, SHORT J2 REGULAR", which implies that J2 is the key to the whole operation.
The "exclusive" edition is sold by Entertainment Earth, I guess they worked out some kind of distribution deal and EE got to have something "special". On the other hand New Force Comics also sells the extra-sound comm.
There's only one extra sound: Spock says "Your signal is very weak, can you turn up your gain?"
The only other difference is the EE comm has a gold-plated lid.
The box claims that even the regular comm has "over 20 sounds" but this is wrong; the max seems to be 11.
On the green side of the circuit board there is a blob of solder marked J2... if you remove the solder the comm will think it is one of the "exclusive" editions and will play the extra sound.
Hi phasepistol,
Awesome!!! Nice work, indeed,!
I was wondering if I could please ask you to help me? I want to replace a plastic anennae grille with a spare brass one I have on my AA / DST
Communicator.
Would you be able to guide me so I can do it properly? Eg) make sure it chirps when you flip it open, have it shut off when you close it, ect.
You can reach me as 'TOS 4 EVER' on the 1701st.
Thanks so VERY much!

My husband has one of these and he desoldered the jumper on it to get the extra sound.
He loves that thing and keeps it on his dresser lol

Actually it turns out there are TWO extra sounds! Somehow I missed noting that "Enterprise this is Kirk" appears after you cut the jumper as well.
Check my other video for the pre-modification sounds that the comm has.

Thanks to phasepistol, I took the solder off the j2 section and freed up the hidden exclusive clip on my communicator, lol!
