Come on, you guys are being hard on Mos, Hitch was just riled up because of the comment Mos made in a separate interview and he just went wild on the poor guy.
'I LIKE TO THINK ON MY OWN", oh you do Mr. Mos Def? Then why haven't you researched any of what you seem to be so bewildered about and created your own perspective or hypothesis on what is being discussed? Oh, no logical response, just simpleton babble? Well, then why are you passionately against people who have done their research and actually know what they're talking about? Oh because you hold on to unpopular ideas? Well aren't you just a little ignorant, hipster, wangster douchebag. Grow up.
All he asked was 'What is their mission statement, according to them (and sort of 'where do they say it') --- it was a simple question with a simple answer. "They want so and so, they said it in such and such place".
I love a debate as much as the next guy -- but when a person asks a simple question, you give them a simple answer. You don't do whatever the heck is in this video.
@dalmurja it's just funny... he asked the question (because he didn't know anything about what was going on) and then claimed that he wouldn't believe their answer. so why ask the question? once he realized he looked like a dumbass he started inventing silly reasons for what he said and hitchens was right to call him out on it. MD was wasting everyone's time.
@dalmurja Hitch does give an answer, but Mos Def says he doesn't believe anything in the media, including what Hitch is saying, and even goes as far to say that he believes Osama bin Laden is (or was) a mythical figure. Saying something this ignorant to someone as well informed and well researched about the situation as Hitchens and Rushdie deserves the response it got.

You thought he sounded very intelligent? Really? Why is he asking Hitchens a question about Al-Qaedas aspirations/manifesto? surely he should of done his research before the show. Theres so many people within the black communinty that could have added more to the debate.
@96matber To me MD definitely added something to the table. Perhaps the contrast to the professional pundits was a little stark and didn't work here. Rushdie and Hitchens have a very strong position towards Islam and are of course very immersed in the subject. Also, I do not think the object here was to find the best black expert on the subject. I wish people would not always have to represent a group. I am white and I don't think Hitchens does or should represent me.
Why the hell is Mos Def talking politics? If they wanted a balanced, intellectually based discussion surely they could have found somebody better.... oohhh im from Brooklyn!! (your having a political debate) what ya gonna do put gun to his head....
Bin Laden might as well have been a mythical figure the way they used him as a boogie man for 10 years. When you finally get to him, he always magically escapes like the villain from inspector gadget cartoon series, finally to be "killed" after 10 grueling years of wars, searching, private contractors making billions of dollars and suspiciously buried at sea. Who believes this nonsense? Eisenhower warned America of the Military Industrial Complex decades ago and his words came true.
I love the 'universal' defense of "You don't KNOOOOOOWWWW ME! Don' akt like you KNOOOOWWWWW ME!!!!"... Whenever I've seen someone in a 'debate', and whip out that gem, they're LOSING the argument. @GetTheFaCtss I hope your being very sarcastic. Because what you said at face value is racist. I see your mental gymnastic thought process and it does not work.
@covertporn I was indeed being facetious, and yes, it was a prejudiced comment, not racist. Racism, by definition, is prejudice on the upper end of power. I am not inflicting any pain on this man, but I was pointing a very common ghetto mentality amongst a majority of blacks. And they are not African Americans. I have met many people from Africa and they are NOTHING like the blacks in this country.
Mos Def was def outta his depth and revealed himself to be ignorant - but his skin color has nothing to do with it. You find the same level of ignorance with Sarah Palin, Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann. All would feel the lash of the Hitchster should they try to hold sway with him.
I'm a huge Hitch fan, but he's disconnected with the general population. Mos Def's question was valid as that the Taliban has no political objective. He was bewildered at that, and it's unfair to try & put him down because he's having a hard time trusting the information he has when what he's been given goes against everything we have been taught about the nature of war and terrorism. Terrorists almost isn't the right word. They're not trying to get anything done, they just want to kill us.
All that idiot needs to know, and what would have shut his ignorant ass up, is that the Taliban would execute his stupid ass for playing music, listening to music or singing or rapping in public at all. After listening to him, maybe they have a point.
Did anyone else notice at 3:24 what Mr Def says about music? I can't believe that a hip-hop artist considers the Taliban's views on music and books as "finer points". For someone like Mr Def who makes a good living out of music, I would have thought that he would have the self-respect to defend his freedom of expression.

"Guests of 'Real Time With Bill Maher' are usually experts such as journalists, professors and politicians participate in the panel, as well as some actors and celebrities included." [Wikipedia]
Mos Def may be a great actor and artist, but he knows as much politics as anyone else in Hollywood. The whole format of the show is to pair experts with pop stars and watch shit fly.
@LowestofheDead I think it's reasonable to think that "they don't want anything, they just want to kill us" is a reductive argument. It flies in the face of everything we have been taught about terrorism & war- as a way to defend rights or in retaliation of something specific. It's been a long time that a group of people have been targeted out of racial/cultural rage to be murdered as a mechanism to spread their hate. Most did not believe the Holocaust stories when they first heard them either.
I once respected Mos Def intellectually, now I see that he is just an anti authoritarian over liberal who is proud of his own ignorance and wears it as a badge of honour. The undue infamous respect he gets is childish and pathetic, Dr. Hitchens and Mr Rushdie have more honour and bravery then any self proclaimed gangster, they know what these regimes are capable of. The panel is discussing WAR, brutal dictatorships and real terrorism not pathetic suberban solipsism.
@leonthalion Hitchens didn't have doctoral degree; he was not Dr. Hitchens. He was unbelievably brilliant and one of my heroes but he didn't earn a doctorate. :)
@Shawnruss the doctor thing is a running joke if you watch a lot of his debates, i should have clarified. I do however hang my head in shame to once have admired Mos Def, i was young and impressionable, however have restated my position.
Mos Def is a likable guy. Unfortunately he expresses a type of skepticism which is common on hip hop culture. He doesn't really know anything and he just wants all knowledge to be relative. It is a form of idiocy that springs from ignorance and an unwillingness to search for truth.
@dezmundo1251: Have to say I love the irony of you accusing people of being ignorant in the same sentence in which you misspell 'there' as 'their'....
This. I know people like this. They don't know shit because they can't trust their own reasoning and skeptical faculties to separate the garbage from the news...
@arabjin666 It's fine to evaluate the media for it's credibility and evidence and think about it by yourself. But that's not the same as not listening to anything that isn't your own thoughts. Also Def seems include everyone who says anything he disagrees with as 'the media'. Shown by the fact that he asked Hitchens and Rushdie a question and then decided to not trust them AFTER they gave him an answer he didn't like
@kennyingram He didn't have any business being apart of this subject matter or panel in the first place. It's like trying to explain nuclear fusion to a house fly.
There is perhaps nothing more frustrating and infuriating than listening to an idiot repeatedly interrupt the eloquent and wise words of Christopher Hitchens.
U may dissagree with mos def, but he makes a solid point. Sheep are made of people blindly following, question your self first. Then and only then can u have an independant thought. Asking if what bin ladin is/said. Was accurately translated was a logical question. I dont speak haji... Do you? Bin laden was scum but his point was larger than just a question about terrorist.
@redshark618 no and i doubt even "truthers" obsessed with an event that happened 10 years ago would care, though you may be a demonstration of the contrary...

@tigersforchrist if your trying to win people over don't do it on a hitchens video. Mr hitchens was pretty much the major 'muscle' of the rising atheist movement and all the atheists here are mad as, well for lack of a better term, hell.
What a terrible representative of the American black community. They must have known this bloke was as dumb as dogshit before they got him on the show, so what was the point? Why couldn't get someone else who had the ability to put more than one thought process up at a time?
wow i watched this episode, but missed this overtime. I remember Def, i thought, handled the show well. Didn't make any great revelations, but didn't make himself sound like a total moron. Then overtime started :D man, he really made himself look like an idiot. I can almost understand what he was trying to express originally, but then he just lost it (and me). Then started injecting all this faux bravado, 'brooklyn' intimidation tactics, and ultimately race. poor form man. poor form.
@lordscully mos def is no moron at all. perhaps he didn't articulate his views very well, and did get a little over sensitive, but he is no moron. listen to 'black on both sides'.
@Lookbeyondtheobvious He was blabbering for the sake of blabbering. If he really wanted to know what was on the tape, how he could be for sure, why he doesn't trust what anybody says because of the fact that they said it, then really all he needs to do is learn Arabic. On a side note, crowds tend to cheer for insignificant statements made by people that speak too loud.
Mos Def just made such a fool of himself. He basically admitted to not understanding world issues because he refuses to read, talk, or see anything related to them. When you try to talk the loudest the whole time, it's clear you're the one full of bullshit.
"This is the scotch talking". Maher is the one who is afraid but Hitchens is without fear and backs down from no one. This is a man who willingly subjected himself to water-boarding.
I couldn't hear most of the second half of this video due to Mos making loud inaudible noises with his mouth. either debate and let each party say their piece or have the grace to be silent. do not wail louder than anyone else because you don't understand their response.
Because he's Muslim, he was being an apologist for these Muslim terrorist scum and stupidly trying to make a case that we don't actually know their true goals and maybe they're not as bad as we think.
@DogsinPants I think the point that Mos Def was trying to make is that their is a massive amount of ignorance and confusion amongst the collective psyche of the citizens of united states as to what the political aims of Al Qaeda (ie their 'enemy' in the war on terror) and that surely they need to know exactly what and who they are meant to be fighting before they decide if the war is just.
@dezmundo1251 I can't say I agree. While I approve and agree with his level of skepticism, and while he does make a couple of good points, he shoots holes in his credibility through his dogged adherence to a level of determined ignorance.
Hitch brings up a valid observation, 'You sound like you just heard of them."
Real information is available to him through a variety of verifiable sources and he appears to be completely ignorant on the topic.
"But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
That is what this is about not the stereo typical and god worshiping responses given so far.
“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations."
Why not giving an evidence of evolution or big bang to disprove Creator God. There was NO need of such aggression. You are my proof that without God people can not maintain morality. Almost 100% atheist are abusive and anger attitude character. First try to maintain good behaviour on youtube, because for us Morality is from God. Since, You have NO God so having NO morality too. Christians use words like thanks, God bless etc but atheists use idiot, fuck off, sick, delusion etc.
Jesus people stop making fun of mos def! He's very intelligent for a rapper, you guys can't expect him to rank up intelligence wise to Christopher freaking hitchens! A master of debate and mockery, he could destroy most anybody
Also, the attitude Mos Def projects here is very revealing and indicative of how my generation often thinks, unfortunately. There is a very anti american sentiment among my peers, (yes, especially by the more liberal types) and so they aren't quite so quick to be against the muslims who are against america because THEY THEMSELVES are against America. They are ashamed of the military industrial complex growing out of control and the gross corruption and unfairness that we see all around us.
Defs problem is that he expects to find bullet points listed of an al Qaeda/Taliban agenda, of which there is know such thing, and he insists on asking two academics who, in no way, find information in this way. Def will have to make an effort as hitchens said.
Anyone who begins her argument with HAHAHA or concludes with LOL can not be taken very seriously.
I'm a middle aged, intelligent adult. You need to try a lot harder to keep my attention. I don't believe in God, and I have yet to hear a good reason to change my mind. I require facts, not just promises. I also don't blindly believe things, because I'm not an idiot.
Christopher Hitchins did more for mankind than any religious zealot has ever done. The world is better because he lived in it.
I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but Mos Def IMO is not a retard, and I've seen him make some pretty good points on this show before. *warning:biting comment ahead* Rappers do have an IQ, you know. Mos Def stated an opinion, and HItchens was harsh, and Mos Def was harsh back. *friendly comment ahead* We can all agree to disagree, though.
Chris Hitchens had a fine way of leading debates down irrelevant paths, continuously. What was the point in attacking the credibility of a rapper who was just stating (albeit inarticulately) his skepticism and had already freely admitted his ignorance by asking the question in the first place. Any reasonable person can deduce these things without these two turning it into a 'who can talk louder' contest. I wish they would have both just shut up for a moment so Salman could talk.
One rapper against 2 semi intellectuals that are repeating the same shit we hear on the tv and now we know that it wasnt even true. Come on people! Dont let those people indoctrinate you with disinformation.
@loni55 Not sure where you get your info but what they were talking about is still fact. Mos Def is heavily uninformed, Bill Maher is very informed but also has some misinformed views on anti-vaccine and Big Pharm beliefs, while Hitchens and Rushdie are (were) two of the top intellectuals on the planet who have insider information and contacts that the mainstream media do not.
@BrokenBard Yes, that is the whole point. Mos Def is uninformed. He admitted to not really knowing the difference between Al Qaeda and the Taliban. He asked a question about what the political motivation or manifesto. Not because he was making a point, but because he was generally curious.
@adamav Hitchens took Mr. Definitely's (still, greatest part of this video) question as an attempt to make a point about Bin Laden being a mythical figure or the Taliban being misrepresented. Whether or not you agree with any of these panalists, Mos was only asking a question. One that Rushdie tried to answer calmly, but THAT didn't work.
@adamav And yes, I realize that "a question about what the political motivation or manifesto" is terribly awful grammar. I didn't proofread enough before clicking "Post." I blame the booze. And to some extent, I blame my parents... so willing to let me find my own way and make mistakes. But mostly the booze.
If you consider those two top intellectuals than im scared of the future of this world. Use your own head and make your own opinion. Dont let someone biased as those two plant their ideas on you and make you think they are your own.
@loni55 Your response is as predictable as it is boring. You assume that because I called them intellectuals, as in intelligentsia, that I don't think for myself? I would say 'interesting' but it's really not. If you are unaware that it is actually a fact that they are (were) world renowned intellectuals then so be it...just just realize that you are arguing against evidence and truth.
@loni55 You're further wandering down the rabbit-hole of ignorance. All you need to do is study and search for yourself. You are arguing against fact and then saying fact is a myth...please go to school...please read some books...please search the internet and you will feel less dumb after finding the proper information. Yes, Hitchens was officially listed as #5 in a list of 100 top intellectuals of the world on two separate occasions. Yes, Rushdie was on the list as well.
You mean the list that was conducted by the Prospect Magazine and Foreign Policy? If yes than the list is a simple ballot from which readers could cast their vote. No scientific/intellectual basis was on play there and therefore it has no validity.
I can bet you that i read more books than you ever will and that im more educated thanyou are but that is not the issue here.
@loni55 Yes yes, and your dick is bigger and you were more popular in highschool, blah blah blah. I get it; you're compensating. It is highly unlikely you have ever finished a book, let alone will read more than the average person, let alone more than I have read. That being said, again, try checking out every single article, every introduction, every biography from when Hitchens passed away and the world of his enemies as well as his peers call him a leading intellectual. Cred.
I dont need to prove anything to you and actually i dont even feel the need to. Either way you are avoiding your famous intellectual list which i proved to you that is bullshit just as the things you are saying.
I know Hitchens work that's the reason i know he was nothing and his work is not much neither.
ok he says he doesnt take anyones word for shit...lol...then why ask what alcidas agenda is...to ask a question is to request someone else knowledge on a subject....stupid nigger...lol

LowestofheDead 1 week ago 3

@DogsinPants I think the point that Mos Def was trying to make is that their is a massive amount of ignorance and confusion amongst the collective psyche of the citizens of united states as to what the political aims of Al Qaeda (ie their 'enemy' in the war on terror) and that surely they need to know exactly what and who they are meant to be fighting before they decide if the war is just.
dezmundo1251 1 week ago
@dezmundo1251 I can't say I agree. While I approve and agree with his level of skepticism, and while he does make a couple of good points, he shoots holes in his credibility through his dogged adherence to a level of determined ignorance.
Hitch brings up a valid observation, 'You sound like you just heard of them."
Real information is available to him through a variety of verifiable sources and he appears to be completely ignorant on the topic.

Also, the attitude Mos Def projects here is very revealing and indicative of how my generation often thinks, unfortunately.

BrokenBard 2 weeks ago
@BrokenBard Yes, that is the whole point. Mos Def is uninformed. He admitted to not really knowing the difference between Al Qaeda and the Taliban. He asked a question about what the political motivation or manifesto. Not because he was making a point, but because he was generally curious.
adamav 2 weeks ago
@adamav Hitchens took Mr. Definitely's (still, greatest part of this video) question as an attempt to make a point about Bin Laden being a mythical figure or the Taliban being misrepresented. Whether or not you agree with any of these panalists, Mos was only asking a question. One that Rushdie tried to answer calmly, but THAT didn't work.
adamav 2 weeks ago
@adamav And yes, I realize that "a question about what the political motivation or manifesto" is terribly awful grammar. I didn't proofread enough before clicking "Post." I blame the booze. Yes, Hitchens was officially listed as #5 in a list of 100 top intellectuals of the world on two separate occasions. Yes, Rushdie was on the list as well.
BrokenBard 3 days ago
@BrokenBard
You mean the list that was conducted by the Prospect Magazine and Foreign Policy? If yes than the list is a simple ballot from which readers could cast their vote. No scientific/intellectual basis was on play there and therefore it has no validity.
