  • This is such a beautiful song in every respect, and that is something that everyone can appreciate no matter where they come from.

  • Delighted to see pictures of Wales. As a welsh person, in an Irish band in America, it brought back memories of what I left behind.

  • abesti ederra gora euskalerria eta irlanda

  • I feel a connection when having a pint with Irish and Scottish people after a rugby game. I just can't say the same about English people. They may be decent enough, but they somehow just don't get it.

  • One of the most beautiful and sad songs i ever heard.

  • TaiDieVest

Any empathy or support I would have given you was blown away by your childish and ill-founded comment 'English scum' Try moderating your language, forget your hatred and concentrate on solving your problems.

  • cymboi, SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. thankyou.

  • this song hits a chord with me now. Because my wife is Bulgarian, the British (Read as "English Scum") government is making us jump through so many hoops to claim child benefit, even though i have paid NI and tax all my working life. An English couple who never work can get so many benefits, but we cant calim shit just because my love is Bulgarian. Free Scotland. Free Ireland. Free Wales. Free me to love my wife and claim wat is due to us from my hard work!!!!

  • Tanx for posting!!

  • The man has a wonderful set of Irish pipes.

  • Beautiful song, and the pics are ok too, no matter where from, as a Welshman with West Cork ancestry, I'd recommend you take a tri[p over to Eire, you'll soon understand the love our Irish cousins have for their country. Da Iawn fella!

  • Dioch yn fawr, I will get to Ireland one day just haven't got around to organising it just yet. Hywl fawr

  • @cymboi o ble tin dod?

  • @mrkev24bass This is not just about abusing the Irish. Poor and hardworking Welsh, Scots and English people have been exploited for years. We have songs to sing and many are sad and reflect old conflicts, lost loves and battles. The deal is the rich declare war or make policy and their servants fight or enforce the policies. The servants, merely puppets, come from the exploited but dont know or care. Like Punch and Judy the puppets amuse and are blamed.

  • @mrkev24bass Be we Scottish, Irish, Welsh, from the Isle of Man, Brittany, or Cornwall, I've always felt all of the modern Celtic tribes have a deep love for the lands they inhabit, and a respect for each others. I know who I and everyone I know cheers for when the rugby is on and Ireland aren't playing!

  • my lil boy half welsh half irish. cant think of a better mix @mrkev24bass

  • Beautiful beautiful song. Just illustrates what a vile country Britain was and still is in this day and age. Growing up with an Italian and Irish heritage in Scotland isn't easy at times but this song makes me proud of my routes. Tiocfaidh Ar La

  • @rkomarzrko What day is that will come for you then? When the majority of people vote for a United Ireland through peaceful democratic means? Britain doesn't have much to be proud of in Ireland but neither do your terrorist heroes. It takes a big man to shoot a soldier while he sleeps in his bed or blow up a kid out buying football shorts with his saved pocket money. The road to your ideal Ireland is a trail of tears and innocent blood on both sides, I hope a piece of land is worth it.

  • @rkomarzrko. Well don't just think it was the Irish who were transported to Australia, it was ordinary Brits throughout the country for petty crimes against the rich.

  • @rkomarzrko. I've Irish ancestry too but I'm not proud of the IRA scum who planted bombs and killed children such as Jonathan Ball in Warrington in 1993. Now that is vile.

  • @Enquiringmind777 What makes you think that Irish nationalists are proud of killing children?,take time out and discover how many irish children were killed at the hands of the British, your lucky that the watching world cant see on TV and video or newcasts what britain did in Ireland in the last 800 years,ok,2 wrongs dont make a right mate but think yourself lucky that your not one of those in history that was murdered in the name of Britishness,.lad history didnt start at your birth.

  • @Enquiring Mind 777 So your proud of what the brits done to irish children if your going to condemn the IRA in your statement then condemn the brits they murdered more children then the IRA could ever have done. We have 800 years of history of british murder not just the past 30 years,

  • @rebelsofireland. Are you saying British soldiers went out to kill Irish children, What the hell are you talking about? How about Dominic McClinchey of the INLA spraying people with a machine gun and throwing grenades into a church full of worshipers in the house of God. What do you have to say about that? Is that what republicanism is about?

    Did Dominic mclinchey

  • @rebelsofireland to true

  • @Enquiringmind777 and neither am i .....but are you proud of the 800 years of british scum

  • Everytime I go to Bulgaria my friends want me to sing this lovley song and I always sing it in the Paddy Reilly style because its the best version of a very beautiful and emotional Irish ballad - maybe I should post my version!

  • @puregloster Yes please. Let's hear you.

  • I like most every version of this song that I've heard, but have to say the Dropkick Murphy's version is my personal favorite. I just love their interpretation.

  • This really is my kind of music, i love this song always did and always will, this is a song that i have to learn to play and sing sometime in the future, yes i have to say again this is a great and wondeful song. Ed

  • No wonder nearly half a million have clicked on this. the ultimate version of a terrific song, from the cello at the beginning, to Reilly's awesome voice, to the beautiful bridge (is that a flute or penny whistle, I can't say) I first heard this in 1987, and have never tired of it. I wouldn't dare cover it, and I rarely say that, but there are some bloody awful corruptions of this song out there. I only wonder what John McCormack could have made of it. Nobody had a voice like his.

  • The European Potato Famine hit Ireland badly because of so many people's reliance on the potato. The British Government's handling of the crisis was a cock-up but there was much sympathy for the starving Irish on the mainland. It cost the Prime Minister (Peel) his job.

The world community is currently cocking-up the relief effort to the starving of the Pakistani floods. Nothing changes.

  • paddy reilly is simply the best irish folk singer,i wish he was still touring,im too young too have seen the best in der day,a lot of them have retired, best of luck to them, but im still raging i missed out,so lonely round the fields of athenry!!!!

  • It is a beautiful song, doesn't matter where the video was shot. Irish born and bred and will live on this beautiful island until I die. I am proud of my ancestors and of our people today scattered all over the world who listen to this song without any video. It is the music and the lyrics that count.

  • athenry is in galway u fool

  • Speaking as an Englishman I have to say , the list of "proud achievements" in our history is indeed a small one , repelling the Armada and helping defeat the Nazi's are up there , hard to find anymore.

  • @lesblakeman. I take it you haven't bothered to look at the Nobel Prize List and Englands standing on it, or indeed all the inventions, culture, architecture that have emanted from England, that does not negate the fact that England did not treat Ireland well down the centuries a fact of which I am not proud of especially as I have Irish ancestry.

  • why cant people just appreciate great music instead of being so political all the bloody time, you typed the song in to you tube so just appreciate the music

  • Video of wales, so what, reminds me of many a night in north london, now fewer and fewer irish pubs an almost vanished phenomenon.Drove through willesdon a few weeks ago, i knew in my heart there was nowhere there where this was on the duke box if there were any of them there.Great song.I'm english originally from Croydon, it doesn't matter, really it doesn't.

  • this song means so much to our family, my sister boyfriend was only 17 when he was knocked down, (13 years ago)and when he dies in hosp, my sis sang this to him, and a tear rolled down his face..special song... Nicola , Inverness

  • I thought Paddy Reilly was a kid who sings this?

sad tale, and yet really nice lyrics - weird mix.

  • my father loves this record....it's beautiful.....timeless

  • Excellent song, great singer and superb pictures. Many thanks and keep up the good work!

  • i was looking for this version of the song, and i came here and got it. thanks very much cymboi, fuck what anyone else says!

p.s born and bred Dublin, it'l do!!

  • Thanks Jim

  • I will be moving to ireland soon i have always loved ireland its people and its music

the terrible times the british did to them the starvation and the evictions in the 1840s

we have a lot to be ashamed of

  • beautiful song

  • Beautiful. The favorite Irish song of a girlfriend I had (or should I say, she once had me) some 12 years ago.

  • For all those who are concerned that the video does not relate to the song. It's a beautiful song and I added to me what are beautiful pictures. I do not have pics from Ireland as I have never been. I am reluctant to change it now as the post has been here for several years with many people using as a memorial to loved ones gone on.

  • @cymboi good song great vid god bless

  • @cymboi Dont worry about the pictures man. You did a great job with the song and some beautiful images. Great video. Thank you for doing it. Greetings from the states and a big thanks.

  • What a beautiful song, I'm so prous to be a Scot of Irish descent. Our ancestors suffered so much and still managed to come through it in the end, it's amazing.

  • @SamanthaM92

That always inspires me somewhere - the fact that they went through so much stuff, yet they always seem happy and friendly...

  • Words seem inapropiate in trying to say what this great song and exellent singer mean to me, glad to sub you my friend, writing this through tears, God Bless you and God Bless Paddy Reilly.

  • @mush1955 stupid bastard there was no potato famin till the english came, and it was all catholics till the english came, what part dont u get? lol

  • @mickeymacca65 Well, you know what? I would rather be an Irish atheist than an Irish who defines his/her nationality by some silly religious belief. The Celts were not Catholic. They were fierce warriors. Conversion to the meek, mild faith of Paedric set the Irish up for acquiescence to the British....

  • cym you are an idiot, u take a great song and take the mick out of it with your video pointers, this is wales etc: get a life

  • @mickeymacca65 If you don't like the video then don't watch it!

  • @mickeymacca65 or you could turn them off

  • you forgot cornwall

  • why play the best irish record ever with a shit video? play the song and video, not the crap u put with it

  • good song, but why pictures from Holland??

  • @ConnorDuncan The blurb tells you why.

  • i think Paddy Riley has a brilliant voice ideal for this type of song. ilove this song this is my favourite version. Glyn

  • i love this song...so bittersweetly beautiful....my papy is called michael and god love him he left ireland through the starvation ..only to meet my mother an englishwomen!imagine how i feel !knowing the history....all we can do is know ,and use it as our wisdom xxxx

  • up the celts

  • Beautiful just beautiful

  • Beautiful song!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • I'm English and proud to be English, I love the fact that I have Scottish and Irish blood and love my Scots/welsh/irish kindred. As an English man I undoubtably have alot of celtic blood in my veins and even Irish men undoubtably have massive amounts of anglo saxon blood in there veins. Over the centuries the English and Scots and Irish have moved and settled and migrated all over the British isles. Like it or not by blood and genetics and ancestry the English Scots Irish & Welsh are identicle.

  • " I rebelled they cut me down"

He broke the law, end of story.

  • I'm English. I AM proud of my country, despite its faults. But I'm DISGUSTED in what some of our ancestors did.

A lot of it stems from when the rich ran the country, and had no opposition due to denying education to the poor. I've met plenty of rich people. You can't tar them all with the same brush, but a lot of them didn't want the poor educated because that would have shown them up for the imbeciles they were.

Please Ireland, don't hate us because of them. They are dying out.

  • What a wonderful song!!!! Could cry everytime i hear it. Reminds me of really good days i spend in Ireland! A fabulous country with brave people!!! I love it all!

  • i am English , but what a sad song and what a voice . brilliant......

  • in all the versions iv e heard this is the best trust me iv e heard many

  • @peterdougie Personally I prefere the dropkick murphys' version but that may just be my taste :P

  • Slightly Ironic that some of the pictures come from holland... home of the house of orange. But still

  • It's not meant to be political. I used beautiful pictures to go with a wonderful song. Although it does have a link in the way that you suggest. so does Cornwall and Wales. Firstly they face Ireland and secondly, they are Celtic. Thanks for your comments. Mark

  • I love this song. It's so beautiful, gives me the chills every time.

  • Beautiful song with great words. Never forget history!!!!!

  • This is beautiful,Thank You so much for sharing it with my family.God bless all those, who believe.

  • this song makes me feel ashamed to be english

  • @mdmx33 yeah. well there ya go. tough shit mate, sorry about your nationality, you can't help where you were born. viva las irlandes, viva las malvinas!

  • @mdmx33

Not all English were responsible for the acts of a greedy few. As not all Germans are responsible for the holocaust and not all white men are responsible for slavery.

The English are fine with me. Any other Irish shite heads that feel entitled to hate the English weren't even alive by 1921.

No better than hoodrats in America that think slavery gives them a free pass to behave however they want.

  • Your an idiot you dont have a clue

  • @kylematheney Yeah you're right. Same as not all Irish are responsible for the fact that their preists and nuns were allowed to sexually abuse their children for so long.

  • @wew0nitfivetimes Yep,we always get one sarcastic , twisted bastard ,in any discussion.I suppose all protestant vicars and ministers,as well as Sunday school teachers were untainted and pure.Don't blame the people ,the only ones who were aware of what was happening ,were the poor children who couldn't do anything about it.
