Hey..I have a problem..maybe someone can give me sound advice. I'm a shorter individual but I tend to train with taller, heavier people. My problem is the levarage and reach advantage that they have over me. I realize I always have to move inward to get them, while they can just stere. It seems straight forward but I wanted to ask.
I'm about 5 foot 7 and i often find myself sparring people from 5 foot 10 - 6 foot 1. the key for me is indirect motion.. so instead of fighting them head on like they will want you move side to side. in my style this is a "triangle step" which just means you are making an angle. another good technique for shorter people is to wait until they make the attack and open a vulnerability we can take advantage of, hope youre still training hard!
I am not a Mantis player either, but in my Tai Chi Style (Yang Style Chen Man Ching lineage) there is a Movement similar to the Mantis Catch. Our Sifu taught us two ways to apply it: ONE: Draw the opponent towards you, and oof-balance him . TWO: Draw yourself close to the opponent, using his arm as the "rope" you "climb" towards him. I am aboz 6 feet long, our sifu was about five feet long. He never had difficulties to get in on us.
@KingofAnger You may try triangle step (e.g. used in Dragon Style [Loong-ying], White Eyebrow, or some Hakka styles); triangular step has been mentioned by Kippest above.
trapping is awesome, especially when done quick!!! mantis is definitely one of my favorite styles :)

I'd guess that's it. Question asked and answered. I'm a non-mantis practicioner, but I have the sam issue or non-issue.
