  • ...can you play ghost notes in a mix of 16th notes in 274bpm?? :)

  • Oh gawd thanks, I forgot how to read bass tabs all of a sudden and this vid really helped me.

  • I probably spent a good hour and a half searching the web for different techniques on how to play dead notes. I had the right idea with resting my fingers across the neck but always got a tone. However, I found the solution to my problem about a minute through your video, i'm not supposed to push down on the strings. Herp derp. After a long facepalm I got this technique down and continued on with my learning experience. So thank you for the lesson, it helped me a lot and saved me a lot of time.

  • @Tetsuo964Pinocchio Im glad to know that this video helped. Pick that thing up EVERYDAY. It will pay off!

  • @semajbowens All day everyday. There's no better feeling then accomplishing something new on bass.

  • Great lesson. Thank you.

  • Great lesson...thx....12 ppl dont like ghosts.

  • Great tutorial really! But I'm still having harmonics, what's the best solution? Thanks!

  • @shuiichiro Just simply place another fretting hand finger on the same string. It will cancel out the ringing.

  • I don't get it... When I try it I get a thump, but a really high one. Doesn't really sound like bass :(

    Anybody help?

  • @semajbowens

Thanks for uploading this... cause I didn't know what was a ghost note (I just started playing bass).

  • great lesson. Thanks for the help.

  • so ghost notes are accually mutes?

  • Nice Warwick, i jus got an Ashton ab1105 very handsome 5 string =p

    ty for demo bro.

  • Quick Question: So you can create a ghost note anywhere on the fretboard without playing harmonics?

  • @MistaTwigz -Yes as long as you have at least 2 fingers of your fretting hand on the particular string you are playing on. If you use just one finger you run the risk of it ringing.

  • @semajbowens Thanks for helping me out there, man. I was having trouble with that before.

  • @semajbowens hey so does it matter which fret ur fingers are on when u play ghost notes? or are they all the same?

    btw thanks for the video

  • @bleah123 it shouldnt matter because you are not fretting it (pushing down the string)

  • @MistaTwigz Yes. In some spots you will have to place another finger on the string to cancel out the harmonics

  • Sting muting. Could have wrapped this video up in 3 mins

  • @thecityalive String muting creates a muted note. Ghost notes are percussive. Not the same.

  • not a bad explanation about the technique but the demonstration lacks of groove and next time try to choose real funky beats, it helps in understanding the feeling

  • I lvoe your bass dude, a Warwick 5 string Corvette? i have pretty much the same one nice lesson nicer bass

  • @prsguitars1678 Yes its a Warwick Corvette Standard. I added a bass/treble EQ to it since this video. Brightened it up a bit.

  • @semajbowens

    Awesome bass!

  • thank you sir.

  • This video helped me learn a new style and few songs thx alot man.

  • Thanks man!

  • Cool...ghost notes can also be thought of as , a 'grace' note...it helps create a feeling and groove..."Rocco" from Tower of Power is the master of ghost notes...the ghost note you are highlighting could be also regarded as a 'pick - up' note...good vidz mate. Cheers

  • Just Incredible

  • koita vyzia pou'xei....

  • Thanks for this clear illustration. I like the grooves too.

  • so is a ghost note just a muted note?

  • yup!

  • also do u make other bass lessons

  • thanx man this really helped me

  • Quick question. When I rest my left hand on the strings above the 2nd fret like you do, I get that percussion sound, but with an unwanted rumble to it.

Any idea how to fix this?

    Thanks!

  • Just simply place another finger on the same string (Left hand)

  • Oh wow thanks man. That was great.

  • Awesome..You're a blessing!

  • Oh wow. This sounds sick, thanks man.

  • Im not too clear on what your comment means but God bless you.

  • Anyways, thanks for teaching me a ghost note.

  • Any time!

  • I like how you go beyond just showing what a ghost note is and how to play it. The examples and showing how it's played in a song are really helpful.

  • Can you play a ghost note without an amp?

  • Yes, but obviously it is going to be hard to hear or even bet noticed in anyway... but you can use the same technique to do it.

  • i never really "learned" ghost notes, they just came to me as i tried to go more along with the groove in certain songs

  • ghost notes are notes that don't actually play - just a percussive effect.

muting is different, you can hear muted notes as they have a short, muffled effect (i.e. palm muting on guitar).

So I don't really see what the fuss is all about.

  • You should tab the song you played, because its awesome!

  • Thanks, I was wondering when trying to learn a bass tab!

  • Hey, are ghost notes and string muting the same thing

  • Yes but string muting can also produce a actual note but it doesnt sustain long.

  • thanx i was worrying since i'm self taugt i don't know much

  • Absorb as much bass knowledge as possible. It will help you in the long run. Im self taught also.

  • beautifull words, it says a lot of you

    greetings from spain ;)

  • hi, just one question, man xD

how do you avoid harmonics while ghosting? that's always been sort of a problem for me Dx

  • I personnaly put my fingers up to the first fret, you can be sure that there's no harmonic up here!

if you you put them up to the 3rd or the 5th fret it's gonna be same as pinch harmonics, so just put them up.

  • same with me

  • the way to avoid harmonics is to just simply put another finger on the string with your fretting hand. One finger will create harmonics but when you add another finger it will cancel it out. Hope this helps. Its hard to explain.

  • no, not hard at all, I understood, thx a lot man!

  • Thanks man!

  • over here we call em mutes i thought a ghost note was somthing entirely different i thought it was an off beat or beat change where it starts the barre 3/4 in or somthing and catches the bass player out. i was well off lol

  • thanks

  • thank great lesson but what does a ghost note look like on a tab, i've been told about 3 different things

  • Ghost notes on tabs appear as X's i belive, i think so not 100% sure lawloloawlwaolol

  • the fret number with two brackets on either side

    eg. (6)

  • X's represent plain muting not ghosting

  • You're an idiot.

  • Why dont you shut the hell up. If he is teaching something that you dont need or may possibly be wrong. There are better ways to get the message across, you mongrel.

  • Thank salot man, now i can read all the bass tabs i want without looking at them and saying wtf :3

  • Thanks, tough finding good info on ghosting.

  • dude, i love black people. Especially ones that can play bass. Racist people suck my dick.

  • What the hell does this video have anything to do with race? haha

  • Cheers man good video..cant wait to get my new bass now! Haha thanks man!

  • That's a hella nice grove man. Never really knew how great ghost notes can sound, thanks for opening up my mind to new concepts =)

  • great stuff, thank you

  • grande lezione....

  • thanks for the help >.> im a beginner today is my 4th day playing the bass. and i couldn't figure out how to do a ghost note.

    Thanks!

  • that helped me so much !

    gr8 video

  • for suggestion i would like to know what is the easiest way to learn notes on your bass and to know how that specific note sound like.

  • If you play from tabs just write down the notes next to the tabs and other than that... just playing a looooooooooot makes you learn the sound.

  • very helpful even to an advanced bassist. thanks!

  • can u xplain to me what a hammer on is and how to play it???

    thanx

  • a hammer on is when you play a note say 10th fret on a string then use another finger and hit say 13th fret but DONT pick. that is a hammer. if you need more detail go to wikipedia

  • thank you that made it easier to understand.

  • thanx man i'm from Mexico u got a friend here now

  • great stuff
