I probably spent a good hour and a half searching the web for different techniques on how to play dead notes. I had the right idea with resting my fingers across the neck but always got a tone. However, I found the solution to my problem about a minute through your video, i'm not supposed to push down on the strings. Herp derp. After a long facepalm I got this technique down and continued on with my learning experience. So thank you for the lesson, it helped me a lot and saved me a lot of time.

@MistaTwigz -Yes as long as you have at least 2 fingers of your fretting hand on the particular string you are playing on. If you use just one finger you run the risk of it ringing.
not a bad explanation about the technique but the demonstration lacks of groove and next time try to choose real funky beats, it helps in understanding the feeling
Cool...ghost notes can also be thought of as , a 'grace' note...it helps create a feeling and groove..."Rocco" from Tower of Power is the master of ghost notes...the ghost note you are highlighting could be also regarded as a 'pick - up' note...good vidz mate. Cheers
Quick question. When I rest my left hand on the strings above the 2nd fret like you do, I get that percussion sound, but with an unwanted rumble to it.
the way to avoid harmonics is to just simply put another finger on the string with your fretting hand. One finger will create harmonics but when you add another finger it will cancel it out. Hope this helps. Its hard to explain.
over here we call em mutes i thought a ghost note was somthing entirely different i thought it was an off beat or beat change where it starts the barre 3/4 in or somthing and catches the bass player out. i was well off lol

GHOST NOTES ARE LIKE A TRANSITION FROM NOTE TO THE OTHER LIKE HITTING AN Eb THEN GOING TO THE F NATURAL BUT LIKE SLIDING IT UGH GHOST NOTES ARE HARD TO EXPLAIN BUT THATS NOT A GHOST NOTE WHAT HE DOING U SHOULD DELETE THIS INNACURATE VID THATS JUS MUTING
Why dont you shut the hell up. If he is teaching something that you dont need or may possibly be wrong. There are better ways to get the message across, you mongrel.
a hammer on is when you play a note say 10th fret on a string then use another finger and hit say 13th fret but DONT pick. that is a hammer. if you need more detail go to wikipedia
That's absolutely amazing (though they're just ghost notes ;) ). Helped me really understanding what a ghost note is, 'cause a text was never able to tel,l me as good as you did!
Thx. I was actually using a yamaha DJX keyboard. It has alot of tracks where u can take out whatever you want. I just took out everything except the drums.

@shuiichiro Just simply place another fretting hand finger on the same string. It will cancel out the ringing.

Quick Question: So you can create a ghost note anywhere on the fretboard without playing harmonics?
MistaTwigz 1 year ago 2
@MistaTwigz -Yes as long as you have at least 2 fingers of your fretting hand on the particular string you are playing on. If you use just one finger you run the risk of it ringing.

@semajbowens Thanks for helping me out there, man. I was having trouble with that before.
MistaTwigz 1 year ago
@semajbowens hey so does it matter which fret ur fingers are on when u play ghost notes? or are they all the same?
btw thanks for the video
bleah123 11 months ago
@bleah123 it shouldnt matter because you are not fretting it (pushing down the string)
semajbowens 5 months ago
@MistaTwigz Yes. In some spots you will have to place another finger on the string to cancel out the harmonics
semajbowens 5 months ago 2
Sting muting. Could have wrapped this video up in 3 mins
thecityalive 1 year ago
@thecityalive String muting creates a muted note. Ghost notes are percussive. Not the same.

I like how you go beyond just showing what a ghost note is and how to play it. The examples and showing how it's played in a song are really helpful.

Can you play a ghost note without an amp?
joeborder 2 years ago
Yes, but obviously it is going to be hard to hear or even bet noticed in anyway... but you can use the same technique to do it.
lukeaef 2 years ago
i never really "learned" ghost notes, they just came to me as i tried to go more along with the groove in certain songs
TAYGUNOV 2 years ago 2
ghost notes are notes that don't actually play - just a percussive effect.
muting is different, you can hear muted notes as they have a short, muffled effect (i.e. palm muting on guitar).
So I don't really see what the fuss is all about.
8ulls3y3 2 years ago
You should tab the song you played, because its awesome!

hi, just one question, man xD
how do you avoid harmonics while ghosting? that's always been sort of a problem for me Dx
krizalidzero 3 years ago
I personnaly put my fingers up to the first fret, you can be sure that there's no harmonic up here!
if you you put them up to the 3rd or the 5th fret it's gonna be same as pinch harmonics, so just put them up.
XxDadaxXx 3 years ago
same with me
thingy86 3 years ago
the way to avoid harmonics is to just simply put another finger on the string with your fretting hand. One finger will create harmonics but when you add another finger it will cancel it out. Hope this helps. Its hard to explain.

If you play from tabs just write down the notes next to the tabs and other than that... just playing a looooooooooot makes you learn the sound.
