  • Was this going into the Kink heading to Kettle Bottoms? Absolute worst place for a wing failure at Road America if that's the case........

  • @gretzkysyotes Good eye, your right. she lost her wing just past Suzuki Bridge and hit just at the exit to The Kink. Flat out there in 5th, hit 6th through the turn about 170mph in hopes of taking the speed through kettle. Open wheel cars ABSOLUTELY need their wings on turns..

  • don't get me wrong, i'd probably have a heart attack or something, or at least shit myself, but that wasn't a very bad crash, mighty spectacular, but not much of an impact as far as high end motor racing goes. the cars are designed to fly apart, it dissipates the energy. most of the really bad crashes in modern motor sport don't look like much, sudden stops hurt the fragile human body much more. in general.

And do you tell yourself that Robert Kubica's accident in canada wasnt much of an impact as well? LoL . Yes they're desinged to dissipate energy but you dont see a modern day car get smashed into oblivion and have only the cockpit remaining unless its a massive impact, what a joke.

  • @jraybay (1)regardless of whether you're hitting a concrete wall at 170 or not, how "bad" the "impact" is is much more to do with the angle of incidence, not necessarily the results, whether the car's smashed to oblivion. kubica's impact in canada was much worse, yet the car stayed much more intact,only 3wheels off(ok 4th held by tether) but1of those broke prior to the impact and, more pertinently, tub and engine remained firmly attached. less energy disipated. kubica's impact was much more...

I skimmed through it but I really couldnt read accidents brought up from the 90's as examples with legge and Kubica and talking about the point of impact like you are a the guru of accidents. I'm really not saying this was the biggest accident ever in the history but to take away from it's severity like you have is kind of foolish.

  • @MrTautologist The wreck here, It's quite "violent" I think thats the keyword here and I dont think anyone " in any capacity" categorize the sseverity of accidents based on injuries. You cant just share a bogus opinion like that because she walked away unhurt. Check the Gforces she sustained and how much speed was scrubbed off at the point of impact then talk about merely glancing off of the wall.

  • @jraybay (6)...though it may have been 93, i cant remember), not that impressive a crash, but he woke up an hour latter in hospital. in all of these examples the cars that were worse off were the result of the least severe incident, the lighter impact, but the drivers were worse off from the incidents with higher energy impacts. think of all the nascar crashes that resulted in the development of the hans device, they weren't the biggies that nascar's famous for, but people were literally...

  • @MrTautologist Wasn't the HANS device mainly developed by Mercedes through their F1 effort from '94 to '99? I know Downing had the idea back in the early '80s for IMSA, but never implemented it. from the mid 90s it was available in NHRA, F1, Cart, Indy and others, but so few used it until Dale's crash. I know at least one current IRL driver who hates the thing, and would drive without it if they would let him.

  • @jraybay (8)... in any capacity, regard the worse crashes to be those where people get hurt, not necessarily where everyone watching gets scared for them. sorry, i didn't mean for that to go on quite so long, just trying to explain how there's a difference between a huge crash and a huge impact, and that there's also a difference between a huge crash and a bad crash. this was a huge crash, but it was neither a particularly huge impact nor a particularly bad crash.

  • @MrTautologist You have to look at the data and statistics, as you mentioned some dont look bad but the energy tavelled through the car, obviously undetectable with the naked eye, could be quite severe. you've mentioned Ayrton sennas impact was hard but looked survivable, I think that guy is trying to make a case for the legge accident here but vice versa.

  • This might sound weird but this crash happen during "Dirty Jobs" filming at Road America. Mike Rowe was spending a day as a pit crew for some driver and this crash was shown during Dirty Jobs
