I do a lot of random drawings and i think im becoming a art slump. Any advice on how to break these random habits ,so when im asked to draw something i dont get stuck.
I never heard about "art formals" are they drawing techniques? do you know where i can look into it/ learn them?
on the 9000 bad drawings you mean try new things?
this is off the topic but i heard its good to uses references for drawing for any drawing. how do i know when to stop using them and learn from them.
some stuff you say is very true, i get artist slump alot and find it hard to draw from my imagination, tho im still learning forms and the basic stuff.
thanks for makeing this it realy made me think about how i should not be afried to learn things that may appare simple at first e.g drawing trees (which can acturly be come complacated)
Loved this!!! #5 is something I sometimes have problem with, more so long while ago then now. I see a lot of work that has all this "detail" like for instance armor and sometimes I get overwhelmed and it's like I really wanna do all that. But A. Haven't learn perpective/skill enough to understand what is going where and B. Because of A don't have patience for all that. But sometimes looking at all the details look cool & think my work isn't detailed enough. -_-' Anyway, good vid! Educational!
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make this video for everyone. It was such a learning experience for me. ESPECIALLY the part where you described an artist like a magician... Thats a really good way to describe what its like to be an artist that can draw, and handling the excitement that non-artists get when they see a drawing that you've made. hehe not sure if i explained that right :P
Anyways, Thanks a lot again for making this video, its much appreciated :)
Thanks, Mark! These seven common beliefs are so true when it comes to art/drawing (and other subjects, too!). Thanks for putting your perspective on them. I've watched several of your videos and enjoy each and everyone. Looking forward to watching more! :-)
Awesome video tbh - Thanks alot man I'll watch this when Im wondering what the hell is happening when im just not "feeling it" or gettings things right :)
Hahah, ah, I love this! Very informative! Your videos have been changing the way I think of art in general. I wish you were my teacher, would be more than invaluable to learn this hear this and ponder for young artists.
Hahah, and you're awesome! Like the ranting from 4 through 6! XD
ppl who often draw details too early end up with distorded or with weird proportions but then since they did so much detail there either scared to erase it or they just stop and trow it away.
but.. some of my very best drawings came on accident.
and as for you modern art v.s production I think..
what's missing in art is meaning and what's missing in meaning is art. So an abstract modern art painting is just the appreciation of 'balance' or whatever it is we find visually appealing. It has no meaning outside itself.
Thanks again for all your videos. You do a good job.
As an art teacher you shouldn't plan everything out art is an expression how you feel at that time. I think when you plan too much your work suffers for it don't over think it let it happen freely.
I watched the vid when you plan your not open for change usually when you have a plan you stick to it. I saw your 90 minute painting vid and it wasn't very impressive it looks like you're trying too hard. This is what I mean too much planning leads to final product looking too fake or produced.
It sounds like you're scratching to look for criticism now. Planning and preproduction is vital for making all sorts of art, whether it be movies (storyboarding), literature (rough drafts), and artwork (sketches, studies). When you plan to make any type of art you're also being open to changes and new ideas. Preproduction is all about reconciling these new developments with the original idea or solidifying any idea.
I _welcome_ criticism. I also question it. At first I thought upsyde9 was joking but this is a great opportunity debate the idea that "artistic expression" justifies anything and everything.
Arguing is fun since there's always the chance that I can be proven wrong. If you're always right, you never learn. The ideas and opinions that I present aren't "mine".
They're just ideas and opinions. They have no material value. They're ready to be forsaken for something that can be proven.
Ugh. Now I have to state the obvious: Without a plan, EVERY problem you run into is a problem you never planned for.
Planning means thinking about what you WANT - maybe not EXACTLY what you want, but you plan for the things that MUST be in the final result. During each stage of the work things you have to be constantly observant for what differs between the desired results and what you're turning out. You can still alter the future steps of the plan.
And there's no such thing as "trying too hard" -- it's called "being inefficient" -- expending too much effort and not getting enough results.
"Too fake" is something that occurs when your method doesn't account for some phenomena that is responsible for making something look "real". That happens when you either don't plan for it or you're not observing the result of the image.
As for "produced"... well hell... All the big studios invest a lot of effort into planning and preproduction -- they're sure as hell not gonna jump right into modeling and rendering... And when they do, their budgets run out and things look like ass.
You can't criticize planning if you yourself don't know WHAT to plan for and have hardly any idea of what you want. Just hoping that you can swish the paint around and have something nice come out.
On the other hand, if I was an attention-whore that wanted to impress everyone, I'd upload only videos of 8-hour paintings that were time-lapsed into 5 minutes and cut them to music.
Mark Chong I love you!

About my videos and what I do: NOTHING I do is there to impress. I don't record and post demos to impress. I record and post demos to EDUCATE.
People are only impressed when I do something that looks good and I've done a crappy job of explaining things.
