I went to buy the film yesterday at HMV(in Tokyo) but they were sold out. I asked the shop assistant if the DVD had English subtitles, he wasn't sure so he rang the maker of the DVD and apparrently there isn't any subtitles at all. Very dissapointing, I hope they do a subtitled version soon for the international audience. Can't wait to see the movie. If anyone hears any newson a subtitled version please let me/everyone know. (^_^)

The film was great, awesome real Karate fights. I have mixed feelings about the sensei's teachings though. I thought the defensive nature of Karate had more to do with character development and safety of both you and your opponent than with the so-called "mastery" of the art, how it is interpreted in the movie. Better defence shows the better fighter - and that's it? And it didn't even stand out as much in the final battle between Giryu and Taikan.
The final fight was actually a bit of a letdown, IMO. Far from the best fight in the movie.
Anyway, Im more into knockdown karate like kyokushin, than into JKA type sparring like the movie, so the overly defensive strategies and "first hit wins" mindsets dont really work for me.
i know akihito yagi and meitatsu yagi repectfully. i was taught under them. i was an english middle and highschool student who studied under meitatsu yagi for about 2 years. gojuryu is my favorite martial art, and always and probably will be goju-ryu.

Attended Montreal Film Fest to see Kuro-obi, drove 15 hours and let me tell ya it was well worth it. Both YAGI Sensei and NAKA Sensei performed their respective roles wonderfully!
O mestre no início fala: Karate ni sente nashi, um dos ensinamentos do sensei Gishin Funakoshi criador do estilo shotokan. É possível que seja um filme sobre esse estilo? Não acho muitas informações desse filme aqui no Brasil.
o filme estréia dia 13 de outubro no Japão. O protagonista é interpretado por Akihito Yagi, Shihan da Meibukan Goju-ryu karate. O antagonista é Tatsuya Naka, Shihan da Nihon Karate Kyokai. Acho que é a primeira vez que vão fazer um filme de karatê de verdade com karatekas de verdade.

Well... There is Goju in it.
Still, it's about Japan in the 1930's and Karate so geography of the original karate wasn't the first priority I'm guessing.

Karate on mainland japan was actually very new in the 30ies -having only been brought over from okinawa first time during the 20ies.
but this is a movie, not a documentary. So a few logical flaws are to be expected.,

予告の印象ですとアクションを説明しすぎている気がします。
フルコン派の私から見た伝統派の凄みは、一瞬何が起こったのか認知できないところにあると思われるですが、スローなどでのアクションの説明が過多に陥って、その良さを消してしまわないといいのですが...。

「カラテ」としてではなく「空手道」として描いているトコがグッド。
ストーリーとか俳優とかは題材が題材なので目をつぶって。
韓国が作った某歴史捏造空手映画よりはずっとマシ。
もうちょっと沖縄っぽさをだしてくれればなぁ。でもまぁこれで沖縄空手の知名度が日本と世界に広まることを願いたいです。
