Interesting document. Can't believe the rich are not doing anything to solve joy many problems. Flooding, transportation... Garbage.... You know, if they actually stop with all the construction if the skyscrapers ( really, does Jakarta need more if 'em?) and start focussing on building more canals , or having a plan to solve the garbage problem, then jkt might not completely flood. Sadly, no one has stepped up to the plate yet....

This problem could not be solved as it entangles various social & political problems.

Say if you appoint a company to solve the rubbish problem, those who sort the trashes as their major income wont be able to make their living. On another hand, they dont want to be relocated since they can nothin else.

Governments themselves didnt take this problem seriously as they realise that the maintenance cost will soar as they can't depend on the society's self awareness to maintain what will be fixed.

I have been to JKT in and out past four years. Lately the flood problem is more frequent. Harbor area is flooded even on dry days, coming from high tide on certain day of the month.

.. an oft-misunderstood remark occasionally heard in America is the expression "I wonder what the poor people are doing." This ironic expression along with this video describe how the rich benefit at the direct expense of the poor .. the rich pillaging the environment by pumping down the water table. "Lack of planning and maintenance" is the direct consequence of a business-friendly tax structure. The kind of tax structure that built those "gated communities".

if the flood was caused by flooding because of more rain then something could be done ...

if it was cause by "SINKING" how do you stop that? make people stop pumping water for drinking? doesnt make any sense ....

Jakarta is one of the best examples I have seen of the negative consequences of gentrification, and massive wealth disparity. If you are rich enough you are able to ignore the problems of the city, and problems that you may even caused.

Cities like Mumbai in India get flooded too, when it rains, but this is news to me, Underground water usage has to be reduced and other cities must be developed, i think a combination of most of the solutions discussed in this video should stop the flooding.

What would stopping the flood mean? Saving the people or saving Jakarta as a controlled area for oligarchic profit production? Jakarta can't be in jeopardy, because it is not created nor controlled by people, but by nature and individuals. The title slips out that Jakarta needs saving to retain it as an capitalist production area.
