petrucci is definitly one of the sharpest guitarist out there. he's fast, accurate and precise he's able to write pieces of great complexity and beauty. yet i can't seem to like the sound of anything he plays. his touch is empty and he transfers absolutely no emotion to his guitar. dude plays like a robot. i know kids with 1 year of experience who can feel the music more than he can. thats totally weird and borderline creepy.
@furiousmat maybe he just isn't expressive when he plays? :-/ personally, i felt it in glasgow kiss and in this song... but then again, i havn't really listened to much of petrucci.
You need to watch more of his videos. A lot of the times he is just demonstrating or playing for magazines and so on. In other videos you can see him playing amazing solo's with great emotion in the middle of great concerts around the world.

"Playing with feeling". I swear, that's just an excuse for people to defend inferior artists or a different style when their opinion is threatened. John can play with feeling that would move Slash (Cuz he's supposed to be a feeling master, right? *Facepalm*) to tears, he just chooses to write some of the most complicated music around instead. @AspiringRocker729 What a lot of people fail to realize is that complex/complicated to them may not be such for Dream Theater guys and other top players, since they play as well as they do. It may just be intermediate difficulty for them. So anyone who says they're playing that way to show off or whatever are just stupid.. It's not showing off to them, it's just how they write since they're so capable. I do the same.. the better I get, the more complicated my noodling/writing is. Not on purpose.

Satriani, Petrucci, Vai, are the great guitar players they are because they play with technique AND feeling. But if someone is just not into their style of music, you cant just make them say they are the best. This is music, art, not a competition.

Listen to the outro solo in Octavarium, the solo in Spirit Carries On, anything from An Evening With Petrucci & Rudess, Hollow Years, Ministry of Lost Souls, Another Day, Learning to Live, The Best of Times, The Count of Tuscany, A Change of Seasons, Voices, etc. etc. Trust me, it's there. The amount of notes put into a solo does not always diminish its emotional content. Petrucci is definitely among the few musicians at his level that can pull it off.

@moneytalks15217 Lol, just because Petrucci doesn't run around on stage making funny faces does not mean he lacks passion. Besides, his blues playing is far better than Angus Young's, not to mention Angus' vibrato is terrible. Although music is subjective, Petrucci is undeniably a better guitarist.
@moneytalks15217 I'm Australian, and as proud as I am of AC/DC, it is easy to see that Petrucci is a much better guitarist. Angus Young was innovative in his time, and will always be remembered as one of the most influential guitarist in hard rock, he was never as good as what is commonly thought.

Stream Of Consciousness, As I Am, Lost Not Forgotten, and pretty much any songs off of Systematic Chaos or Train of Thought should get you started. This song is something John can do in his sleep. Dream theater !! their drummer is currently touring with avanged sevenfold witch i think its pretty bad ass but yeah goin back to petrucci i think he is pretty good !! i wouldnt say he is GOD or the best guitarrist of the world !! he has a wonderfull talent no doubt but not the best !! like someone said !

@xxjohnjohnxx2009 tbf im not really paying to much attention to dt or portnoy much lately, theyve passed their musical peaks imho (sorry guys) but i do know portnoy is engaged in a number of small projects and since leaving has played with many bands, maybe youre right and he still is touring, but the last i heard he had left a7x indefinately, but ill take your word for it

@xxjohnjohnxx2009 really sucks for mike? He was the one who left because the rest of the guys didnt want to take a 5 year break! He was the one that went to play for another band who didn't want him then tries worming his way back in. He's without a doubt one of the best drummers ever, but he's got an ego to match, and I dont see why the DT guys should have to deal with that.
