Even as an Obama supporter, I would like to see more compromise on this. It seems unreasonable to expect that in ten years, we would not benefit greatly from being able to rely on our own oil resource, while at the same time ensuring we invest in renewable, domestic sources of energy (like natural gas and wind). I think he would garner so many more votes if he would expand in this direction.

Oil is inelastic, our entire infrastructure, cars, food, cosmetics, plastic, all circulate around oil. So we need a serious long term solution, we can't pass down our problems to the next generation!

He was a driver, and they had to lay him, as well as a few others off due to the fact that gas is so expensive. Not only that, but high gas prices help with food price rising as well. Alot of farmers pay alot for gas to maintain their farms with vehicles/machines. Also stores raise their costs because it costs so much to fill up their trucks for drivers.
I think trying to bring down the price of oil would be a bad idea. If the price of oil stays high, then algae-based fuels and the Vertigro system will become economically viable (the price would decrease as supply is increased), and we will then be able to completely switch over to algal fuel in three-five years, since using it requires no modifications to the internal combustion engine.

Through all the hurricanes and storms in the gulf not one oil platform has failed. Take the leases back where they are not drilling, because ther is nothing there or to hard to reach. Lease land where oil is easy to get. In ten years when the price is outrageous will they say "but it will take ten years". Big oil makes .05-.08 cents per gallon to retrieve, refine, and transport. government makes .15-.18 cents per gallon for doing nothing. Who do you think big oil will pass a tax increase to.

Funding towards developing alternative energy resources would be the greatest possible investment in terms of national security. We already spend more money on the military than all other nations combined. Why? To control the access to the global oil supply. Remember, Oil is a finite resource. It is a fallacy to believe that this 70% of the leased land contains oil. It is land that has been awarded to companies to be prospected. This doesn't necessarily mean that there is oil there. Obama's opposition to drilling off the coast will hurt us both in the short run and long term as this oil is currently being extracted by our enemies including China and Cuba. This same oil would be in US companies hand's if it were not for the lack of foresight during the Clinton administration.
I agree that we need to invest in other sources of energy, but Obama acts like help 10 years from now is nothing.
If we always chose not to do things because it would take years before we would see results then the world wouldn't have half the advancements that we have today.
Which is why instead of drilling,that 10 years would be better served by developing alternative fuels and put us on a path towards renewable energy than trying continue to avoid the inevitable which is that petroleum will one day run out.
It doesn't matter whose idea it is to drill or not to drill, if it needs to be done then do it. Gas is too costly & its only going to get worse. No one wants higher prices. Giving $1000 won't add up to much with food cost & other necessities going up along with gas. I agree it doesn't matter if we won't see results for 10 years, we have to do something today so we have a future. We have to get the message through the politicians heads. You're misunderstanding what he's arguing against. Currently, the GOP is saying that by opposing offshore drilling on American soil, Barack Obama is 'against American energy independence'. He's arguing against that in this video. There is not a substantial enough amount of oil in Florida to affect the overall price of oil. Also, the fact is that there are literally hundreds of other options that would are more environmentally and financially viable on the road to energy independence.
So your solution is to support Obama in his pursuit of Bio-Fuels that have not only shown to be more expensive to produce, but will also raise the cost of food for the Americans, and decease our exports... Why not investigate for anti-trust violations and drill? you take care of today and tomorrow. Of coarse there is market manipulations. it's not the lack of oil that is driving the price up. We will still have oil for at least 30 years at current levels (and new oil sources are expected to be found). But we need to find alternative ways for transportation. AND THAT IS POSSIBLE, but the current political climate which is subdued to oil companies, is very hostile so progress is very slow.
IT'LL PROBABLY take 10 years to SET UP and RUN OIL DRILLINGS on the new leases anyway. BESIDES there're ALREADY PLENTY of OFFSHORE leases given to OIL COMPANIES to drill on. THEY just choose NOT to drill on them, cos its too COSTLY.

Drilling for more oil is far from what we need. We need alternatives to oil and gas right now. Even as an Obama supporter, I would like to see more compromise on this. It seems unreasonable to expect that in ten years, we would not benefit greatly from being able to rely on our own oil resource, while at the same time ensuring we invest in renewable, domestic sources of energy (like natural gas and wind). I think he would garner so many more votes if he would expand in this direction.

Oil is inelastic, our entire infrastructure, cars, food, cosmetics, plastic, all circulate around oil. So we need a serious long term solution, we can't pass down our problems to the next generation!

World wide supply for oil is apprx. 84 million brls. A day.
This is a deficit of about .012%.
Any disruption at all will inflate the price per brl., regardless of the actual deficiency in supply.

Drilling is hardly the answer. Rigs are a becoming a rare resource. 18 billion is a small number in the oil industry. The math is easy to calculate the result. Just use long division using the total oil and daily consumption to get a quick prediction.

Get the government out of the energy policy. The government only subsidizes and puts quotas on energy and goods. This makes the price go up and smaller energy producing companies go under because they simply cant compete.
Let the free market decide on on the price and I assure you the price for energy will be lower, greener, and more renewable.

Compared to the United States, price of gasoline in Europe is 2.3 times higher. This has all to do with oil one day being priced off of the Euro. The simple statement that the US will begin drilling both off shore and in ANWR for oil, would instantly lower the cost oil. Well, yeah, that sucks, excapt that there's nothing we CAN do to bring down the price of oil except switch over to algae-based biofuel (corn, soybeans, nuclear, wind, solar, hydrogen, etc. are all totally impractacal for transportation, which is the real issue). Sadly, Americans will not do so until it becomes urgent to, so having high gas/food prices is the only viable option. Drilling off-shore won't make a difference.

It's one of the reasons why food is so high, stores have to pay more for gas to get their trucks filled up to ship the food to them. Farmers have to pay so much in gas to keep their machines/trucks running to maintain their farms. I think trying to bring down the price of oil would be a bad idea. If the price of oil stays high, then algae-based fuels and the Vertigro system will become economically viable (the price would decrease as supply is increased), and we will then be able to completely switch over to algal fuel in three-five years, since using it requires no modifications to the internal combustion engine.

Through all the hurricanes and storms in the gulf not one oil platform has failed. Take the leases back where they are not drilling, because ther is nothing there or to hard to reach. Lease land where oil is easy to get. In ten years when the price is outrageous will they say "but it will take ten years". Big oil makes .05-.08 cents per gallon to retrieve, refine, and transport. government makes .15-.18 cents per gallon for doing nothing. Who do you think big oil will pass a tax increase to.

Funding towards developing alternative energy resources would be the greatest possible investment in terms of national security. We already spend more money on the military than all other nations combined. Why? To control the access to the global oil supply. Remember, Oil is a finite resource. Why not begin diverting these massive military funds towards energy independence, towards something that could leave us a long lasting energy supply minus all the unnecessary military interventions.

There are two main things driving the price: the weakness of the dollar and commodities speculation. We can't reverse the dollar's decline right away. We *can* close the "Enron loophole and get some immediate relief.

It is a fallacy to believe that this 70% of the leased land contains oil. It is land that has been awarded to companies to be prospected. This doesn't necessarily mean that there is oil there. Obama's opposition to drilling off the coast will hurt us both in the short run and long term as this oil is currently being extracted by our enemies including China and Cuba. This same oil would be in US companies hand's if it were not for the lack of foresight during the Clinton administration.

He's arguing against that in this video. There is not a substantial enough amount of oil in Florida to affect the overall price of oil. it's not the lack of oil that is driving the price up. We will still have oil for at least 30 years at current levels (and new oil sources are expected to be found). But we need to find alternative ways for transportation. AND THAT IS POSSIBLE, but the current political climate which is subdued to oil companies, is very hostile so progress is very slow.

Well, if the speculators know that we have more oil coming online, the price will fall immediately, due to the same thing increasing prices now, speculation on the very near shortages in world oil supply and demand. The promblem is not opening more off shore field because the oil companies already control more than 33 million arces now, that they are not using. The promblem is in the refining. It is simple economics my friends, the lower the supplies, the higher demand, equals higher prices. A lot of the times, we are looking for ways to reduce our oil consumption by making hybrid cars and things like that. The thing that people don't realize is how difficult it is to stop using something that we are a custom to. Getting everyone to stop using oil in 2008 and on is equivilent to saying if everyone in the USA smoked, they would be required to quit suddenly. In all reality, gas prices will go up and up and up. Why? Because the oild companies can take advantage of us.

How much has the population grown since then? We cannot "green" our way to energy independence! Taxes on oil when gas is already too expensive is a STUPID ideal!

Yeah, as food prices go up it makes SOOOO much sense to use our crop land for ethanol. Norway drills off their coasts and they are one of the strictest nations on earth in regards to protecting the environment. We need to do the same.
