Actually it is completely different than a normal front kick. Where the strike hit, its purpose and the positioning of the foot and the leg are unorthodox to say the least. The setup was flawless and the kick was executed just as they had planned. Anderson does a lot of stuff off the cuff but that was something Vitor had never seen before. To the laymen it looked like a normal Karate front kick but it was really not.

The initial motion is more of a snap kick (which is Japanese Style) but Anderson leans it back as well (which is more Thia style). A devastating combination of speed and power.

I had the privileged to know and train with a friend, outside of my art. I knew him for a short time, unfortunately. He was one of the very few White men to train in Japan and receive such a high rank. He told me about how legit Segal was. (pardon my grammar) . While in Japan, Segal had to fight every day. After running the dojo, and closing shop, the rif-raff would gather to see if they could take on the White man. Segal is legit.

Many other masters from other arts harshly criticized this decision claiming that the art and the master was not the best choice. I won't question the US army, but I'm sure they account for the the rubber guard's weakness.

Actually it is completely different than a normal front kick. Where the strike hit, its purpose and the positioning of the foot and the leg are unorthodox to say the least. The setup was flawless and the kick was executed just as they had planned. Anderson does a lot of stuff off the cuff but that was something Vitor had never seen before. To the laymen it looked like a normal Karate front kick but it was really not.

@giggityeffyou I believe Steven is telling the truth about modifying the kick over 30 years. If you watch Anderson Silva's K.O. of Vitor in slow mo you can see the mix of styles. The initial motion is more of a snap kick (which is Japanese Style) but Anderson leans it back as well (which is more Thia style). A devastating combination of speed and power.
When it landed Joe Rogan was ranting about how this kick was wild and unorthodox,. Now I see what he was saying. Thank you for posting this!

They not only listened to him, but took advice from him, because he actually is a master in combat techniques (not mma, but tactical combat techniques). I did kickboxing & the angle of where their front kicks came from is the real secret, because it came after a faint that allowed contact through Couture's & Belfort's gaurd without any notice (2 men that know a whole lot about the standup game).

I had the privileged to know and train with a friend, outside of my art. I knew him for a short time, unfortunately. He was one of the very few White men to train in Japan and receive such a high rank. He told me about how legit Segal was. (pardon my grammar) . While in Japan, Segal had to fight every day. After running the dojo, and closing shop, the rif-raff would gather to see if they could take on the White man. Segal is legit.

I just saw some videos on Eddie Bravo performing a "rubber guard". He is all tied up and cannot escape the situation, he cannot defend himself from another attacker, and worse of all, he is lying on his back like a bitch. Many other masters from other arts harshly criticized this decision claiming that the art and the master was not the best choice. I won't question the US army, but I'm sure they account for the the rubber guard's weakness.
