@stroids Joe Pass is probably one of the greatest virtuoso players ever.I rank him as an undisputed master of "old school' jazz guitar. He ranks as one of my all time favourites along with Django,Pat Martino,Johhny Smith,,etc.. Each of these guys are innovators incredible at what they do,and each have their own particular approach.Joe's thing was simultaneous bass line, and chord melody, with monster chops coming out of his ass.But when it came to chords,i mean, just chordal shit,Barney was king.
Show this video to someone, if they don't think it's GREAT, then they just don't like MUSIC... BK = my all time fave Guitarist. Most guitarists couldn't even make these chord runs, let alone voice them PERFECTLY as well..
the greatest in my book ....such beautiful melodies ,stunning, i was lucky enough to meet him , such an inspiration to me as a inept 13 year old wannabe jazz guitarist
Magnificent. I was lucky to catch him in a small jazz club near Oldham in the 80's. He was always tops with me - from his days with Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, Parker, Peterson, and the lovely album "Julie is her Name" in which he and Ray Leatherwood on bass were the only musicians supporting Julie London. It produced her greatest hit "Cry Me A River." He remained for me the most versatile, sensitive and finest guitarist to follow on where Charlie Christian left off. Thanks for the upload.
With the possible exception of Johhny Smith,Barney is chord melody king, bar none...It's too bad that the newer generation of jazz guitar players fail to recognize and/or implement this creative aspect of playing
Thats because the emphasis is about showing off in a political sense while on stage ..how fast or how many "out" licks they memorized . I don't believe true creativity can be taught only copied. Barney was creative without doubt. That's why one can recognize his sound and approaches to music due to his life experiences. Many of the best newer folks have been given everything easier with more limited personal experiences that cannot match what the true jazz greats like "Bird" went through..
Now come on... ! We do try. It's just so darned difficult to do this... You said so yourself when you described Barney as the 'King'. What about Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, etc? All 'Kings' in their own way.
Modern guys like Martin Taylor and Tommy Emmanuel don't do so bad do they?
And don't say they don't compare please. They are just stylistically different.
@loksinsan Great point. And I think the reason for that is because they are too busy trying to blow each other away on the stage. . . they all want to play 300 mph like Frank Gambale or Alan Holdsworth, and in doing so, they totally miss the point of what being a musician is all about.

Don't forget Ted Greene, although he was almost a contemporary of Barney.
