Great to see something that isn't the scare-media stuff about Mexico. I have lived & traveled in Mexico for over 30 years and have never had any problems. I do think it's best to practice common sense things, like not getting super drunk far from your hotel or using ATM's at night, basic stuff really, the same cautions you'd make in Chicago or Miami.
I'd say do not pay any bribes, period. Ask a taxi driver what the fare is before getting in.
