Great scene, and a great way to end the show.

Personally, I think that Gene may have been appointed to his role of 'police-archangel'. Here he clearly states that's he's been inside the pub ('they've got a saloon bar'), whilst we can also asume that for the normal person, once you've entered the pub, you can't return to Gene's world. 

Just a thought.

I think it's incorrect to call Gene an "archangel" (or even an angel). He was very much a human - flawed, troubled, sinful even - who is working out his own issues by choosing to stay in Purgatory & help other cops who get stuck in that shadowy ante-room to eternity. Sadly, he forgot why he was there, for a time. It fell to Alex to remind him. But his innate wisdom & decency still helped others make the right choices to avoid Keats & enter the pub. He's not divine - just "doing God's work."

@twoface0 He forgot who he had been and how he got there, but he always knew what his job was. An Archangel, guiding the souls of dead Coppers to peace. He never forgot that and that's how he led Sam Tyler and Annie Cartwright to the Railway Arms.

Best part is that it's almost exactly the same piano riff as when Sam and Annie finally kissed in the Life on Mars finale. Damn near brought me to tears both times.

@Graniteheart Yeah, I agree! The great music on this show was always such a treat. Listening to the lyrics would tell you so much about what was really going on in a scene. Remember when Gene awkwardly asks Alex out to dinner while the song "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" was playing in the background? Brilliant, in retrospect. But the piano riff you mention - heartbreakingly beautiful, & proof (to those who still need it!) that Galex was a real love story, just as much as Sam & Annie's.

I loved the show still think about it today,means alot.Like been said, a 4th series might lose the magic, it would be interesting perhaps, for Gene to come to Rest in a 4th series, with this new lad we saw ( build his character maybe so its not THE GUV to a new guy) but the Guv has to settle some of his own demons maybe before his body is exhumed and laid to rest (as it was being uncovered in series 3) so its kinda a more Guv focused approach.

Have to go softly softly though, delicate ground.

Gene can't spend eternity in Purgatory; it doesn't last that long. He chooses to stay, he's not damned. He told both Sam & Chris to order a drink for him; he tells Alex "see you around." He'll enter the pub when his job as self-appointed guardian angel is done. When he's ready, he'll walk along those dark, quiet streets, reach for the pub door handle - & Alex will open it from the inside. For her, heaven isn't heaven w/o the Guv, & she won't have strayed far from that door. She's just waiting.

Personally, I have a pretty optimistic view of the afterlife, so my vision of what, where, when and how Gene and Alex meet up again - and how that reunion will look - is pretty sweet. They don't ever need to film it - the scenes in my head are satisfying enough to make me plenty happy.

I think the writers loved these characters & wanted happy endings for them, so how things are left w/Gene & Alex is just meant to be a brief (in eternal reckoning) interruption to their love story. Gene's like a soldier - when the war's over, he'll quit "re-upping" & come home. Til then there's a job to do, but that won't last forever - them being together will. Alex played her part & moved on - Gene will follow one day.

Where It's years into the future and Molly Drak is not a little girl, she's 17 and is following in her mother's footsteps by being a police officer by being in work experience and she is kidnapped and shot in the head by a crazed loner. She wakes up in the late 1980s and becomes part of Gene's new gang, with Keats trying to corrupt her. And her and Gene fall in love and go through the doors together at the end.
