This wasn't about raccoons, it was about a Japanese cousin of the raccoon that has a sac there, kind of like a kangaroo. It wasn't about ball sacs, it just seems that way to us Americans. This has got to be one of my favorite cartoons ever. I watched it as an adult and loved it.
@swattdoggg Actually, it is their testicles, it's not a sac like that of a marsupial in which case the sac is present on the female only. The reason they're so prominent is that Tanuki in the wild have disproportionately large testicles (For their size they're HUGE), so much so that a Tanuki statue is said to represent fertility among other things. In Japanese culture they exaggerate the size of the testicles because it's funny, humour that even children can grasp.

@nubbahDK You have to understand the enviromental issues that the flim is about.... deforestation etc.
The balls bit was put in purely for the entertainment of the kids, as was the transforming racoons bit. Plus, its all based on japanese folklore and legends, so you also have to understand that.
It just proves that people make fun of what they dont understand.
I'm sorry you didn't like Pom Poko, as it requires a pretty high maturity level. Originally, this is an old Japanese folklore, the testicles were meant for humor.
Also, you sound as if you were forced to watch this film? If that's the case, you had already formed a biased outlook from the beginning.
Tanukis are part of Japanese folklore so its based on that LMFAO
