It's obviously not meant to replace major servers. I don't think anyone in their right mind would host a business or important server from home. This is designed to put more power in the hands of everyday people and overall reduce our reliance on third-party servers.
i dont really think it's designed to be a replacement for webservers . opera unite only hosts things under a operaunite sub domain so if you had your own web site domain name there would be no way to make it point to your opera unite server. also apache is for windows to so if you really need a gui eating up half your ram just to run one command - (apachectl start ) then you can use the windows version.XD
Lounge invite: There's nothing TO figure out. Opera Unite is not peer-to-peer and does not assume other users run it too. So you invite by sending just a URL, or users simply go to your home page and then choose The Lounge (using their favourite browser). The services are in fact little web sites, and developers can and will of course add many others.
I don't know if this will catch on, but it could be a counterweight to the trend of dividing the web into consumers/providers.
Make sure you don't accidentally share out private stuff. Also, I bet there will be some hacking vulnerabilities to the hosting computer opened up by this in the next 2 months. Opera Unite is a potentially useful concept for file sharing but it may be wise to hold off for now until the kinks are worked out. I'm going to go ahead and test it. Why not.
i totally agree with you. Oh and of course this is a beta, so it still has some bugs. One more reason why a real review doesn't really make sense at the moment.
Don't rush to be the first one to post a review. Spend the extra 10 minutes it takes to make at least one of the services work. It sounds like you had problems with every service. As a result, the review really made Opera Unite seem like a weak platform.
this is not a review but a walkthrough or first impression nothing more and nothing less. If it would have been a review and none of these service wouldn't work after trying it out for some hours, you could have been sure that i would have dumped Unite completely. If the title says review, it's a review! this isn't! So what's the point to take 10 more minutes to make at least one of the services work, when the rest doesn't? ;)
The title says to replace your server with Opera Unite, and I don't think this video really showed that you could replace your server with Opera Unite unless your server doesn't work to begin with.
this is an honest first look and hands on but not a review? what's your point? do you want us to fake these videos and tell people that everything is running perfectly? it's a beta! get it and feel free to publish your own video! We can't be fanboys and biased.
The Fridge didn't seem to work. For the pictures, I suspect she her photos were in a format that isn't yet supported (it is an *alpha* release, not even a beta), and as for the lounge, she seems to have misunderstood: Users normally connect by going to the other user's home page and then go to the lounge, but you could send the URL so users go there directly.
Another important point not mentioned here is that the *users* do NOT need to run Opera. All the services run on the web server.
You have got a sexy voice!

I wish it could just be its own program rather than integrated in an entire browser... Do you need Opera to 'leech' (or whatever) as well?

i think this program is a EPIK FAIL lol
