  • From 03:54 Still chokes me to death!! John Williams score, the semi-dark underwater and the camera sneaking slowly up to her! I mean no words here. Still feels like someone is in the room sneaking up to me.

  • @nicholaskingmequeen yep or 'it hurts' something like that.

  • Comment removed

  • Sharks: The Ultimate Cockblock

  • One of the best opening scenes ever! For me Lion King has the best opening scene in history! Star Wars has a great one, Saving Private Ryan, Godfather 2. Great Movies with great opening scenes

  • i like the sounds when the universal logo shows at the very beginning

  • @TheJawsFan24 yeah what were those strange sounds in the opening, it puzzles me since i'm not sure what fish makes that sound?

  • my god that must of hurt! She was tied around the waist with a rope and they liked pulled her back and forth! ouucchh!!

  • I've just read on OMG Facts that the screams were real! The harness dragging her back and forth broke her hip!! "The director thought it was realistic acting, and they didn't realize she was injured until she was dragged back to shore."

  • @Caprious223

And you can ever hear her say @4:26 "Ah it hurts!"

  • @Caprious223 you do realize that Susan Backlinie, the actress herself, has publicly stated numerous times that she was not injured at all during the filming of this scene

  • @Caprious223 Never thought that safe words would actually come in handy to... actors of all people >_>

  • The thing that haunts me most about this scene is the fact that the victim is seen going through most if not all of the emotions a human experiences when faced with death. Awareness, shock, disbelief, fear, panic, terror, guilt and acceptance are all on display here and it's a rare thing when a film portrays a character's death so realistically.

  • @ChadATL that is so true ! its what i found so scary about this scene.you feel sorry for her in her final moments too.

the actress totally nailed this scene !

  • Where exactly is Amity island?

  • @leafyutube No Amity Island exists in real life but the movie was filmed on Martha's Vinyard, Massachusetts if that's what you are asking ; )

  • @nicholaskingmequeen Yes she is, i heard this was because when they were filming this scene they had her up on this crane so as they were thrashing her around it was breaking her ribs which is why she was screaming all of that during the scene!!

  • @CrazySummerGirl76 no. in the making of jaws, she stated she was worried about an incident occuring, but it never happened. also, she was tied to two large ropes and was being yanked back and forth by two teams of people. i'm sure it hurt, but she stated she suffered no serious injuries.

  • Realistically Jaws would have taken her legs out after the first bite. Not the first nibble which is when shes pulled down. But when he actually bites her there would be no dragging. Spielberg takes a little creative license. Great film though!

  • Hands down one of the most terrifying movies ever made.

  • does anyone know what her last words where? she was screaming so much i can't understand her. lol

  • @nicholaskingmequeen Mostly she's babbling in terror but when she grabs onto the buoy I think she says "Oh, God, I'm sorry for everything!" which is truly terrifying and sad because at that point she knows she will die and is asking God for forgiveness. So scary!

  • @ChadATL true, but I think it's also her desperately apologizing and promising to do better in the hopes of making it through alive. Just like in real life when someone faces execution they will sometimes beg for forgiveness in hopes of mercy.

  • Scarred me as a kid, but looking at it now, how exactly does a great white maneuver like that? Also, being too drunk/high saved that dudes life. Just sayin.

  • @remaftp about it saved his life.. its a film you cockend

  • we watched this scene in my english class like 10 times, for a film project thing and when we all watched it for real, When she goes "swimming" we all said it in a really high pitch voice like she does. And when she was dying we said "shutup! those teenagers are trying to get high" and stuff it was soo funny :D

  • @Ian2CoryLoveeer shweet!!!

  • God punished her.

    So she died.

  • Still horrorfies me this opening scene.

  • @TheCultOfRassilon She said "God Please Nooo!"

  • My favorite Scene from my favorite movie. I'm so glad I met Susan Backlinie who played Chrissie yesterday.

  • @WelcomeToCrystalLake That's interesting, where did you meet her?

  • @MeBenHalpin She was on a movie convention in Sweden. So it's not like I met her on the street just like that :P, but it's cool anyways.

  • @WelcomeToCrystalLake That is pretty cool, bet she's aged lot now, has she?

  • @MeBenHalpin Yeah she's 65

  • @WelcomeToCrystalLake Is she really as old as that, so she was like 29 in Jaws?, always thought she was only about 20/21 at that point.

  • hope everybody knows that this is a work of SCIENCE FICTION! Sharks do NOT like to eat people! Classic horror, but i hate the idiots who took it literally.

  • Even if I'm creeped out by Chrissie's death, I still love this movie! Who doesn't love classics?

  • my dad told me that when he saw this in the cinema the shark jumped right in the air when it ate her, then spielberg cut it out later on. does anyone know where you can see the original version

  • @TheCheweeRevolutions Never knew that, suppose it was wise move from Spielberg cutting it out in the end though, to keep the audience more in suspense.

  • Load of old crap that came out long before I was born was this very scary, disturbing movie and was embarrassing to watch and listen to. I wish they would release a nice, tame, happy cartoon show like "Ovide and the Gang" on DVD now; the innocence of that TV series is a thousand times more appropriate than this violent, nightmare-inducing garbage!

  • @BKDBrian2 LOL. Grow up. The world isn't full of happy.

  • @Oirad16 Sorry, even my friend TheFREEPlayersVideos knows better.

  • There's a sound bite at 4.31-2 which is the same gargle/yelp that they re-use for when Alex (the boy with the yellow lilo) is underwater and blood is gushing around him.

  • Turn the volume all the way up at the beginning of this one. The sound and opening theme, as well as the most shocking movie scene of all time is enough to take your breath away!

  • @StrengthMuscle2 I saw this when I was like 17 and I hated it! It gave me nightmares for more than a week! I never liked it and never will! I love cartoons like Timon & Pumbaa, Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM, Ovide & the Gang, and Super Mario Bros Super Show. They are all much more appropriate than this nightmare-inducing crap and I will never tell my kids (if I ever have any) that this movie exists!

  • @BKDBrian2 I can see this movie really had an effect on you lol. You're not alone. Sure, watching this can cause nightmares and I'm all for watching more positive things, but this movie presents a real-life horror... sharks! I'm willing to bet you don't go swimming at night in the ocean after you watched this either, and I wonder how many lives this movie has actually saved for the people who have watched it.

Fear can be wisdom at times.

  • Most horror films, you have sex then you die... but hey, 50% ain't bad.

  • FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU SSSTTTEEEVVVVVEEENNNNN SSSPPPPPPEEEEIIILLBBEEERRRRRGGGG UUU FFUUUCCCCCCCKKKIINNGGG NEEERRRRRRRD BBBAAAACCKK TTTHHHHEEE FFFUUCCCKKKKK UUUPPPP GGEEEEKKKKK UUU TTTHHIINNNKKK SSSOOOOO?

  • The greatest opening to a motion picture ever! Great sound and theme! Steven Spielberg should have been labeled a genius for directing this cinematic work of art, especially considering what he actually had to work with back in those days! Amazing movie!

  • When I saw this as a kid....I ran out of the room and away from the tv, freaked me the heck out! O_O

when I got older I was finally able to see the movie...but brrrr.....this movie is a classic, it still scares me no matter how old I get!

  • who the fuck skinny dips in the ocean anyways???? hahaha this could have been avoided if she stayed at the party haha what a dip shit

  • yea i skippped to the part where she gets eaten

  • I'm about to go night-diving in Beliz in another week....0_0

  • @ThePhantom135 Any second thoughts? :P....

  • @WrathSupreme I actually just did it. I kept looking around for sharks. Fortunately none came our way. But I will NEVER do that again! lol

  • @ThePhantom135 LOL!,nice......

  • ow at least it looked more real than

  • 4:08 LOL, literally...i dont usually use "lol" the sound she makes is just...silly.

  • Right away I knew this was a move with balls. Very refreshing and bold to have a nice girlie getting it = double the shock value. I guess making it a kiddie woujld have been going too far and driven a lot of the audience away, but it was ok by the time Alex's death cam along because everyone was already well hooked.

  • Poetic, even. A mermaid in the water ..the horror beneath the surface ...Spielberg proving his visionary genuis.

  • One of the most horrifying scenes in cinema and yet, no blood and no gore. Why use a crutch to shock people when you can do it so much better using their own imaginations. Masterfully done.

  • @anyviolet Totally agree. Spielberg made the right decision to not show us the shark until the 3rd act. Real effort into his craft (something lacking with other horror films these days).

  • @anyviolet John Williams's epically terrifying score helps too.

  • Ladies, this is why you shouldn't go for the toolish-looking prepster with the poor man's prince valiant haircut.

  • I like the shot at 3:54-4:05.

  • Love you Gents.....

    R.I.P Roy Scheider November 10, 1932 - February 10, 2008......

    R.I.P Robert Shaw August 9, 1927 - August 28, 1978.........

    Richie Dreyfuss October 29, 1947 - STILL HERE !!!

  • One of the best opening scenes ever :P I've been watching this film ever since I was nine and this scene still makes my stomach turn :/

  • why would you go out that far in the water and at night, thats when the sharks feed

  • @davisthegamelord Meh, when you're high, everything seems safe I guess lol. Looks like there was a lot of reef being smoked on that beach.

  • i wish i was that shark to seeing horny hot girls in the water id scare the shit out of so many girls tht ever gone inn the water

  • they never shown that shark until alexis death u only go tto see like a bit of the shark then it just went back under the only time u get to finall see jaws out of the water is when he kills the kannoeer then the last moments is at the boat that the three main characters are on

  • TUUUN-TUN

    ... TUUUUUN-TUN

    TUUUUN-TUN ...

    TUN-TUN

    TUN-TUN

  • num num num!

  • There isn't even any blood...

  • @officialpoplyrics it doesnt need blood to be scary as hell

  • lol drunk ho

  • Spielberg in his prime.

  • it was a genius move for the audience not to actually see the shark only it's effects on the swimmer. brilliant horror direction.

  • I love how the logo opens with the sounds of underwater life.....and then STOPS when the theme starts playing.

  • It's amazing how two notescan be creepy in this case. XP

  • I wish I was a shark...eating up a beautiful naked girl. "drools"

  • @thisiswho2 So, you're a vore fan? Ewwwww

  • john williams=best composer ever!

  • I live on Maui and I love that a girl in the background just before Steven Spielbergs name pops up she goes "My Folks a Little cottage on Maui" lol

  • When they filmed the scene where she was attacked, they had ropes tied to her legs, and they dragged the ropes so hard that she broke some legs i think, and you can hear her say "stop it you guys" on 4:26

  • there's one big goof in this classic scene. Look how far away she is from the booey at 3:37 compared to how close she is to it moments later after the shark attacks.

  • Does anybody know what that background sound is during the logo? It starts at like 8 seconds in and doesn't stop until the score kicks in. It sounds like sonar or whales or dolphins or something like that, some kind of squall. I've heard it since I was like five when I watched this movie and I've always been curious exactly what it is...

  • omg i remember when i first saw this in grade 4 i was so scared i couldn't watch the rest of the movie LOL! Now i watch this movie all the time and it's one of my favourites!

  • JJJEEWWS!!!

  • this still scares me.... naked and drunk... no escape in the water. horrible!

  • this would be why I'm afraid of the deep end of my pool

  • Cassidy - i can swim i just can't walk or undress myself.

  • hahaha. I'M NOT DRUNK.

  • Hey, dude! Chrissie looks cute with her shirt off. She should've at least keep the jeans on!

  • this is a first time what i see a american girl with a brazilian girl body.

    beautiful legs and thighs

  • 2:55 lol.

  • You don't swim in the ocean at dusk or dawn. That's when sharks like to feed the most, and you don't swim on a raft in the ocean, the shark will mistake you for a seal.

  • Whats your name again?

    Chrissie!!!

    What are we doing??

    SWIMMING!!!

my family can't stop laughing at that......

  • Damn... that guy was hot, poor Chrissie.

But hey, she prefered the shark to get there instead of that hot guy!

  • about time jaws got some ass he's like this bitch is mine!

  • I've seen this opening (and the making of it) of Jaws many times over the years and it still freaks me out. It stirs up a primal fear that is hard for anyone to overlook. I can't think of a more powerful start to a movie ever.

  • did she died?

oh god, wanted to do this for so long. do people still like it? damn, maybe not. but you know what? I'm glad I wrote it. so there, sue me. no, don't sue me. phew.

  • Thanks to this scene i will never ever go in the Ocean at night, Hell i maybe go once a year at most in there...Sharks an other sea life can have it... Ill stick with swimming an wave pools thanks.

  • But hasn't Susan Backlinie denied that she got broken ribs filming this? And in the 2 hour doc on the dvd it says that the screaming for this scene was done later in the studio with Susan sitting in a bath full of water and Spielberg holding her head back, pouring water down her throat and telling her to "scream her bloody lungs out". I know the other doc from tv in UK goes with the "broken ribs" story but apparently this is not true??

  • @1960sram It is true that Susan Blacklinie broke several ribs uring the filming of her scene in Jaws. You can hear her under the water saying, "Stop, you're hurting me". I believe that she may have sued the production company because of her injury. I also think that she won some money in a court settlement but she signed an agreement not to speak of the incident on public ever again. This is why she does not make reference to it in the annoversary collection DVD.

  • @love2teachmath - funny, I read an on-line interview in which she flat out denies that she broke any ribs and that it was all just a rumor. And she does say It hurts, but I'm sure that was done in dubbing to reflect her reaction of being bitten by the shark. She's done many interviews in which she mentions dubbing her footage w/a basin of water on hand to simulate the gurgling in the ocean as she's being attacked. Doubt she'd be included on the DVD's if she did sue & get money from the studio.

  • @love2teachmath The actress has gone on record as saying that yes it hurt more than intended, she was bruised, her ribs sore and she needed a long hot bath, but she never suffered broken ribs.

  • lol 4:22

  • w8 did the dude that was on the beach die too or something cuz i saw him lying down

  • @bfmvFTW14 he was drunk... so he fainted...

  • @bfmvFTW14 You've never seen Jaws?

  • Proof that alcohol saves lives!

  • @Bravehart10000 Poppycock, alcohol is very bad for you and can damage your brain, moreso if you're 15 than if you're 21. Am I the only 26-year-old who loves Ovide and hates Jaws?

  • Did you know, that when Chrissie is being thrown about in the sea by the "shark" under the water are 2 men holding a piece of rope that is tied around Chrissie's waist, they pulled her around to make it look more realistic but the screaming in pain that you hear is real because the men were really hurting her. If you listen carefully you can hear her screaming out "Ow it hurts" and "Guys stop it" She left with 4 broken ribs :O

  • @TheTwinkleboo Yes.... I own two Jaws Documentarys: The Uk Rare full HD Copy, and the DVD 2 hour documentary.

  • @AnikiDryim I found that out on Chelsea Lately lol

  • @TheTwinkleboo Not true. The screaming was recoreded later in the studio while the actress was in a bath full of water.

  • @TheTwinkleboo did she sue???

  • @TheTwinkleboo I heard that!!

  • @TheTwinkleboo thats sick...

  • @squirebuffy

Well I didn't do it to her :L

  • @TheTwinkleboo That is actually bullshit. In a newer documentary is says they only worried about it happening, and if she DID get hurt they wouldn't know. She never actually got hurt. Also it isn't a continuous shot so how would they not know? (like when she was grabbing the buoy) If it wasn't said by someone who actually made it then it is not true. The stunt woman (who is also the actress who played Chrissie) said she wasn't hurt.

  • @TheTwinkleboo Wasn't that like a rumor? I thought i read it was false... idk.

  • @TheTwinkleboo 4 broken ribs??? i only knew that there were men pulling her because thats what susan backlinie said in the 50 minute making of featurette. thanx for the info anyway :)

  • @TheTwinkleboo in an interview, susan backlinie denied she had been injured. and anyway, like most scenes of that nature, the sound and voices would have been created in a studio.

  • @pauline824 Yes - but the studio voices would have been recorded to match the visuals. So she could have been shouting "it hurts" for real on set . . . and then having to re-record it later in the studio.

However, I'm not sure her voice has been re-recorded for this scene. It's a tight shot - and there could have been a boom (which explains the poorer sound quality...)

  • @JonnyBoyMach2 you know, i think you're right, having watched and listened closely again. and as she's pulled away from the buoy, she mutters something but i can't make out what..

  • @pauline824 i think she was telling an untruth..

  • @TheTwinkleboo will her ribs be ok again

  • @TheTwinkleboo I read that she actually denied that she was injured, and the story is an urban legend ... ?

  • @TheTwinkleboo I heard that, too.

  • @TheTwinkleboo Yes, I also read that. Makes this scene all the more horrifying and utterly realistic. They should've stopped pulling - I'd have sued.

  • True shame. Chrissie was really hot too.

  • This has filled my nightmares so many nights...
