@Rooster1Cogburn This isn't my engine or my team. I was only lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I'm not sure how to take your comment but just know that this video is of an important historical artifact that many people will have no other chance to see.
@mrfuzzles92 That is a modern air raid horn, the radar still works! Our spotter have reported a single V-1 heading over the channel now, can you assign some air cover? Bloody Jerry!
I worked for a large German engineering company as a service engineer. Not all German products are 100% perfect as proved by some of the rubbish that we had to rework before delivery to the customer. I could also mention the trouble my friend had with his £22000 BMW's front suspension.....but I won't.
@hoppinonabronzeleg From what I hear, it gets fired up everyone few months or so. I do need to make it clear that I'm not in the shot, nor am I in any way associated with the folks that run that motor.
@thesweatleaf It's a pulse jet rather than a ram jet.
The pulse jet sucks in air and compresses it with harmonic pressure waves bouncing up and down the length of the tube. Ignition comes in pulses as the wave of compressed air mingles with the fuel in the tube. A ram jet uses high speed compress the incoming airflow, but ignition is continuous.
Pulse jets are just great for generating the most god-awful noise you ever heard!
@thesweatleaf Actually, it's a Pulse jet. Ram jets can't make power when they are stationary, and instead rely on the compression of the incoming air to power them. Pulse jets however can run at any speed (though above ~400mph they lose most of their efficiency), and rely instead on either valves to allow air into the combustion chamber (like the Argus engine shown), or on the shape of the engine (as on a valveless pulse jet design)
correct me if i'm wrong but this looks like the same engine that pushed that same pickup truck in another video.. and i understand there was a demonstration recently of a genuine original german pulsejet with original valves and everything pushing a truck up to 30mph
So I'm tempted to say, through connection, this is that original i read about.
The modern equivalent of this is the PDW or Pulse Detonation Wave engine. Much more efficient than a pulsejet it is supposed to power the rumoured Aurora spyplane. The Germans tried 2 pulsejets beneath the wings of the Me328 parasite fighter and the sheer noise from the twin engines caused structural damage to the prototype. Only the germans could have come up with something like this lolol.
Probably not exactly the best of "rock solid German engineering", IMO! This was engineering built to last one take-off and a 30 minute flight to oblivion. This particular engine is a US "Chinese-copy" of the V-1 Argus built by Ford to power the JB-2 Loon; also underwent a lengthy rebuild so a bit misleading to say that it is still running after 60+ years. Having said that, this one is a beauty and I want one!!! :o)
Well actually it was from the fuel supply cutting out as the V1 tipped downward when it had reached the target. The Germans fixed this later on though so they would impact still under power.
@deviance87 The v1 tipped downward due to the control unit cutting the power when the air log impeller on the nose had realised it had travelled roughly the correct distance.
Damn that has to be really load! I bet people passing by we're like oh shit! And ducked haha

Cool. I was planning to build one of these, I even got the blueprints. Why didn't I? The blueprints were is German, lol.

Air is being pumped in through the front. I believe it can run until the compressor stops or the fuel supply does.
thesweatleaf 1 year ago
Unfortunately there is no moving air across it's surface, no doubt limiting the run time.

some day the Aluminium lamella valves will be worn out. this engine is quite simple and weren't built to last long. a few hours runtime.

its a pulse jet engine, still a jet engine but very different from a ram jet or any other type of engine

That thing was about to to turn cherry red. Those engines cannot handle static testing for more than a few seconds.

Damn! So the audio effects from the video game Company of Heroes "are" exactly similar to the real V1 rockets ^_^
Plus this is quite similar to an episode of Future Weapons when the shows' host was firing a M134 gattling gun!!! Good vid!

Yeah, when we ran our pulsejet at the SantaPod drag strip in an episode of ScrapHeap Challenge, it set of car alarms too. Great stuff.

It's when they went quiet you started to run. When the rocket was done - that's when they come in to "land".
