Love every note. Played in Moran's woodford with Mike, Mary and Gerard Conroy. Paddy lilting nothing compares to them days. Sean Hayes on the Bodhran what sessiuns. Up the west
@TheCherokeeboy He is a very nice player ...this group is the best of old style...seems to be getting rare now ...in the interests of speed / volume ...and loss of tone.
@piratebri I'm talking about flute makers who are really part of the folk music tradition and those whose playing really had an impact on younger folk flute players. James Galway plays mostly classical music and though he plays a smidgin of trad his playing style is too much on the classical side, which causes me to count him out.
Besides, James Galway is still quite young, compared to Mike Rafferty, Kevin Henry, Roger Sherlock, Peter Horan and Billy Clifford, who are all 80 years and above.
@deterdettol James Galway will never see 70 again , so he's no chicken!!
Agree he's not a trad man ...but let's not compare apples and oranges...James Galway can /could play a jig in two minutes ...learning a Bach sonata would be quite another matter for a trad player ...more than two minutes.!
picking is similar, playing guitar beforehand would make it easier to learn but that is actually a bouzouki; it's tuned more like a violin or mandolin than a guitar
The Rafferty's play some wonderful music. Mary I've always loved your playing from back when you were with CTL. I have your "Hand Me Down's" CD which is wonderful. I live in mid Michigan. I hope I get a chance to hear you play again live somday.
Nicely done, Michael. Ar dheis Dé a raibh a anam (May he rest in peace).

is that guitar similar to a normal guitar in terms of playing, picking the strings and the fret

It's not a guitar but more likely an Irish bouzouki. The tuning should change from a musician to another. The most common tunings are
GDAD
GDAE
The playing is quite different
.kind of 'left hand guitar', if you consider GDAE vs EADG[BE].

That first tune is the Dark Haired Boy...
kittieconvoy 2 years ago
It's also the Killaloo Boatman, and the lilting banshee. Funny how many names a tune can get.
PS Get Mike's new CD "The New Broom". It's excellent.

Great stuff!
Which is the name of that jig?
NRamirezCR 3 years ago
First one is The Lilting Banshee. Second one was one Mr. Rafferty learned from his dad; I believe he calls it "Barrell Rafferty's."
