y think it just the input size the biger and the bolt parter that are defrent thaqt all lol and oups the flow of air to but a think that 50 lb of air could do the job
Kind of similar. The army macks were RM6866RS models and featured EM6-285 Maxidyne engines with five speed transmissions and full-time six wheel drive. The steel front is more rugged and better suited to the conditions.
Five speed transmissions??? Is that Synchro or Road Ranger - because 5 speed is obviously nothing compared to 16 or 18 speed... The Army had a series International semis before they replaced them with the Mack Superliners for carting heavy freight.
Five speed Mack TRL107 constant mesh transmission (non synchro) + transfer case. Was simple to operate and only needed five speeds behind the wide operating range of the high torque rise Maxidyne engine. This is the specs of the R model, Mack supplied the army in the early 1980s.
The maxidyne revolutionised diesel engine technology, it was the first diesel to have the rising torque system, where other diesls would loose power when the load increased, the maxidyne would increase torque and carry the load, the 280hp was the first, then the 300, and 320hp engines, the later was called the coolpower and featured an aircraft air-to-air aftercooler, cat had a similair design called ataac.
You can run a hose to a vehicle that has an air compressor fitted for brakes or other air powered equipment such as another truck, some earthmoving plant, some 4WDs or use a portable air compressor or even use your own tyres if nothing available.
Heh, ill be damned, i had driven one of these. ( belongs to a cousin), and this had never crossed my mind. cause that thign started every time. but ty for answer though
Ok, that's what I recall, that answers my quest in another video -
I noticed there is a blue sticker that tells you to wear hearing protection - makes sense to me, but here in the States, I was required by USDOT regulations to wear hearing aids. and I am suffering for it. I can barely hear anymore.
When Dad had one, I remember him telling me you get about 3 and a half starts until the air tank gets too low. And yes, you either roll-start it after that or start letting tyres down to replace the air pressure.
The pressure required to use the air starter, as a minimum, is usually 90psi - a big truck tyre (11R22.5) usually holds at least 120 - 140 psi so one tyre will usually refill the starter tank!
I'm gonna make a video montage of the best air-start Mack trucks - including my work's MIR700..... will need to wait though! I need a decent video camera!
I think from memory it is a revcounter for the speed of the vane mounted underneath the back of the truck for spreading lime or other dry powder products.
Seems to me you can't get a whole lot of cranking power out of a little air tank. I'd be afraid to go anywhere far from civilization with only 2-3 shots at starting the engine.
They're better than electric start, but they're a lot more expensive. If you're miles from anywhere with a flat battery and no-one around you're stuffed, but with air start and an empty air tank you can get her going by tapping the air out of 2 or 3 tyres. And nothing much goes wrong with the air starter itself, unlike those electric starter motors
Saves weight too as you only have one battery rather than 4. Not as common as they used to be in the US, but still popular with petroleum haulers as the light weight allows more payload and no sparks from the air starter.
Yeah - that flapper is called a "raincap" - used when the truck is out in the rain. It prevents the rain from going down the stack and mixing with the soot inside the exhaust... messy job to clean that off when it's absolutely dry and 3/4" thick on the truck and body/trailer
Oh, I see. Thanks for the info. BTW, the Maxidyne is indeed Mack's own brand of Diesel engine. Another Mack Diesel engine I heard of is the Thermodyne. I'm pretty sure all Mack Diesel engines are four-stroke, not two-stroke like Detroit Diesel, as I can tell.
The easiest way to tell the difference between the R600 and the R700 is the R600's air starter sounds like a workshop rattle gun and the R700's one sounds like a air drill! Watch this video and then watch Mack R700 V8 Start up and you will see what I mean!
thanx 4 sharing..thought about buying a mack.. but most in my budget had air start..bad enuf starting my BC Cummins T-line at 5 am ,with neighbours bedroom 6 mtrs away.****
Tell me about it! Somebody at work likes hitting the air starter on a shitty old MIR700 8x4 when you're about 20 feet away and scaring the living bejesus out of ya!!
NICE! I have never seen an air starter on a truck before! Off topic but if you look at the gauge below the blue and white sticker around the time 00:23, you can see the reflection of the flap thing on top of the exhaust stack

Do you think it would be possible to modify one of those starters and mount it on an old Inline6 12 valve Cummins?
ArcticRenegade 2 years ago
Yes, I think it would be possible. The Mack uses a Ingersoll Rand 150BM series air starter which is fairly common.
danegerous88 2 years ago
Hmm... thanx- I'll have to get my hands on one :-P

CF did it for years so did conway, their non union sibling company.

No, the Army R models only come into 6x6 when low range is selected in the transfer case.

When the air tank is full how many times can you attempt starting the motor on average?
I want to fit an air starter to a 1st gen Dodge Cummins truck. Whenever I get the money to buy the truck first!

so the air start is in addition to the electric start? I guess it's just for people who do a lot of stop and go driving.
castirondude 4 years ago
Only has air start. Uses compressed air stored in a chassis mounted reservoir to operate air starter motor.
