lol, i never get tired watching your video's.. i love your sence of humor :) are you not glad your not riding boats breating that recirculated air- lol. semper fi
Thanks for the memories of my days on extended patrol PappyStu. I appreciate you preceding my days on "Boomers". I began a fast boat sailor, had a good 9 years in the FBM world in the middle of my 22yr career with some Drill Instructor FBM Squadron Staff and Recruiter duty tucked in for good measure before finally retiring on another Fast Attack. I have great memories of them all. Thanks for your service shipmate.
You explained the service nicely... I like to say that we play an expensive version of hide and seek with billion dollar tools paid for by our parents... lol
I'm only a senior in High School, but I used to really be fascinated by some submarines sims.
They're very realistic sims, but of course don't capture a single cent of the reality of life on-board those things. Hearing about It was boring yet fascinating, I guess you could say it was a boring adventure, lol. Being on the front lines of history and a cold war, that is.
All the tech on board is really interesting to me. I guess not many of the crew got to mess with it though, right?
@GuitarXpert Pappy... One great thing was we did get movies before they were released.. We were treated well... hey bud, I noticed you showed your USN good conduct medal.. Show a Marine one we all know Marines only need 3 years of good behavior- lol.. Semper Fi- Doc Carey!
Old Salts/Bubbleheads help me recall the distance between the top of the bridge to the waterline of a partially surfaced (TR hatch still dry) and fully surfaced (in port) SSBN Lafayette class.
@PappyStu No problem. Also can you confirm a sea story I heard about the Washington suffered engine failure in a storm (in the Pacific) and made it back to the West Coast just by using the outboard (secondary propulsion unit).
DJ KONZE and John Near.. My place was in the Missle compartment- perhaps you recall. We actually recieved movies before they were released to the public-(MWR-I think). We still have guys today serving. I have a freind who came home after 911 and had no idea about the attacks. They still keep stuff from us misle boat sailors. They like us get NO recognition but still serve as we did (very isolated).. Great guys! Blessings from Doc!
@DOCCAREY Those who serve their country primarily do so without rewards and accolades but that's the nature of the beast. I have no regrets in this regard... Sorry I missed this message and I hope this finds you well Doc... Pappy...
Pappy, Have you ever wanted to meet up in Scotland at site one.. HOLY LOCK! ?? I have not been ther since the site closed and would love to run around there with some who are part of the 41- 4 Freedom!
Very true Pappy. I recall the over throw of the shaw and that radical living in France take over Iran. The people are held hostage by a radical government and thiey will be the recipient of thier leaders decisions! Sad but True! Doc!
Good to meet you Doc... I believe I met a submariner from the Rayburn by the name Scott Crisco... He might have been there out of Holy Loch as well.... Fair seas eh
@PappyStu Thanks Pappy... Have a question. I was in Scotland in 1983 - 86. The G.C. Marshall was over there as well. The older people mentioned making port calls in spain. We never made any other then a nato base at edinburg Scotland. Did Holy Loch replace Rota Spain? or was there actually two bases back in your day (pre 1983).. Thanks Pappy!
I was only there once with a brief liberty in the 70s... Spent the rest of my time in the Pacific and Indian Ocean... Unfortunately I do not know the answer to your question...
i served on uss michigan god crew from december 1998 to march 31, 2002. i got out because i had had enough but i still hold all sailors in high regard because they sacrifice their time to patrol waters for our safety. they definitely deserve all the praise for all that sacrifice.
My son at 19 is going to do his BESS training in Groton probably this year. We are going to see him graduate from boot-camp at Great Lakes in Sept 09. Any good tips I can pass down to him when I see him on his liberty time?
hmmm I guess focus on cronstructive pursuits once completely qualified...
In other words, study or writting or some academic pursuit to fill the long hours of inactivity... I completed external degrees during this time... Writting for me started much later in life but this would have been a good time for it..
We only saw two... Chinhae Korea and Osaka Japan but that was only done for a very short time... Its been a long time... We were homeported on Oahu but actually operated out of Guam...
Very different from any other... Very isolated from others so not the best for families... It is very challenging and demanding as well... Things have changed a good bit since I was in the silent service in many ways so I would advise you find someone currently serving to ask... Someone without an agenda to recruit you....
I'm sorry about my grammar in my last comment. I didn't read the message before I sent it. Thanks for the reply. I heard the food was good on subs. :). What are the chances of me being able to do this when I'm older? Is the training hard? Thanks.
I spent 6 yrs on the Oklahoma City (723). It was a miserable life, but the crew was like family, and the best bunch of guys I've ever worked with, and I'm glad I did it - no regrets. Employers are very impressd when you have something like this on your resume!
I was not tickled with my family seperation... I would reccomend no marriage... And the bond between shipmates you rightly point out perhaps the best quality...
It was superior to any in the military but you ran out of fresh veggies, eggs and milk in a week or so... If you are physically fit and determined to learn you can do it... The training difficulty varies based on what rate you pick... I was a Nuclear MM running the Reactor and Propulsion Plant argueably the most difficult but I had very good employment in the Power Industry afterward as a result...
I was a nuke MM2/SS on the USS Daniel Boone (SSBN 629). I remember the patrol where the Soviets did locate us. We left Kings Bay and a few days later arrived at our package. It was crowded with Soviet surface ships. The Captain asked for a new package and when we arrived there, again the Soviets were there. Worse still, they were the same ships from our first package. We didn't know it then, but this was the result of the Walker Spy ring.
My father was on the USS Thomas Jefferson during the late 1960's. His name was Michael Brucker. Sadly he died on April 5th, of 2005 from a massive heart attack.
Isn't this a re-post? A very interesting video, and a few minutes in I defienetly remember seeing it before, so it must have made an impression on me the first time around too! When I have settled all ongoing (non-model) projects I'm doing right now I hope to get going on the Carrier again! But I want my own computer up and running first.. :) I need a nice base to put it in, I want to make a sea diorama :)
Its a confusing rating name... They actually run the power plant which drives the ship or sub through the water... and take care of other mechanical sustems as well...
Wow. I didn't know you were in the Navy. I was in the Marines for 4 years and the Army National Guard for 6. (Insert weekend warrior joke) You did some cool stuff!
Certainly an interesting slice of a life that most of us will never fully understand or appreciate what it was like. But it seems like such simpler times compared to now, in a weird way.
lol, i never get tired watching your video's.. i love your sence of humor :) are you not glad your not riding boats breating that recirculated air- lol. semper fi
