@DetroitLives313Cilla Black was and still is a great British singer. From Liverpool, she worked alongside The Beatles in the 60s an has been on our tv screens ever since.
Dionne Warwick is giving a concert in aid of The Hunger Project on January 9th, 2011 at The Apollo Victoria Theatre in London in celebration of World Hunger Day. Empowering People. Ending Hunger. The concert is entitled Dionne Warwick and Friends and will be a wonderful evening in song. For more details please type World Hunger Day into youtube. We hope we can count on your support and look forward to seeing you there. Spread the word by clicking the share or like buttons above. Thank you.
thats Dionne's style of singing.... thats her appeal..... if you've noticed much of her songs in that period were more so methodical then raw bursting emotions( belting)....... Dionne's style and technique is taught all over the world... not many singers in popular have the same musical intelligence and timing that Dionne has....... Cilla is great but was never a special singer and sounded like a quoir girl...
EXCELENTE INTERPRETE COMO NUNCA. SU CÁLIDA VOZ Y LA DULZURA QUE PONE EN SUS CANCIONES ME TRASPORTAN A UN MUDO DE APACIBILIDAD Y EN EL QUE TODO SE PUEDE
Had no idea Dionne and Cliff had done a duet on this beautiful song. I enjoyed hearing it today for the first time....THANK YOU for sharing it with us! :)
Dionne's version is weak and, justifiably, only reached #8 in the United States, whereas Cilla's strong version spent four weeks at #1 and sold close to one million copies in Britain. Cilla has had a hit in the United States - "You're My World" in 1964.
This is not the original (it's from a few years ago)...but Dionne recorded it first and had the hit with it in the States, where nobody knew who the hell Cilla Black was (yet).
@shnooger yup Dionne recorded it first but Cilla had the difinitive version....so much so infact that in UK many in the 60's had no idea Dionne Warwick's version was the original
@HarryWebbFan Maybe that 's because Ms. Black did record the 1st UK release of this song. But Dionne's version is the definitive version here in the States. Ms. Black only waited to see what Dionne did next then, basically copied her version for release in the UK. I have listened to both. Cilla has a great voice, but I think she over does it, and sounds strained and forced a lot of the time. She lacks the subtle nuances and sophistication, and ease of delivery, that Dionne delivers.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand your remark. Yes, Dionne Warwick recorded the song in 1963 and had a US top ten hit. At this time, Cilla had recorded her first single, Love Of The Loved (written by Lennon/McCartney) and had a minor UK hit. In 1964, Cilla recorded Anyone Who Had A Heart and achieved a massive UK number one hit, which sold close to one million copies.
Yes, Dusty does a great version, as does Sandie Shaw, which is also on YouTube. In case you are not familiar with Sandie Shaw, she was a sixties diva, had three UK number ones and is best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967 with Puppet On A String.
yeah.... thats Britain..... reaching number 8 in america for a black women in america was a triumph......
didnt cilla steal the song...lol..... her ppl secretly recorded Dionne then released it before Dionne....
plus... Dionne's version is sung better.... she has much more depth and musicality... thats why she was huge sessision singer before she made it big and joined the likes of burt and hal... and you know what happends next.... they recorded some of the finest classics
@shootforthemoon89 Yes, I agree that a US top ten hit for a black woman in 1963 was a triumph, though this was superseded soon after with the massive success of The Supremes. I still believe that Cilla Black's version justifies the song with power and strength, Dionne Warwick's version is too gentle.
too gentle? maybe it was meant to be sung softly.... Dionne is a better vocalist... there are number of shades and degress to her voice... she can go from a gentle whisper to an unbridled wail in instant..... Cilla's covers of burt songs sound nasally, shreud and simple........ all Cilla does in these songs like alfie is belt and she is a sub par belter compared to Bassey and Warwick.
@GrahamLondonUK To achieve number 8 in the States requires thousands of times the number of sales to achieve a number one in the UK. Dionne has achived this 56 times and is still a top star today all over the world. I wonder how many people outside the UK remember Cilla whose "singing" career was finished forty years ago
@Isleworthful Oh, Isleworthful, that's nonsense! Look at it logically - the population of the United States is approximately five times greater than the United Kingdom, therefore as both versions sold around one million copies, Cilla outsold Dionne by five to one!
@GrahamLondonUK No Dionne's version outsold Cilla everywhere in the world bar the UK, her US sales were far greater than Cillas. were in the UK. Lets not forget though Dionne is an international singing star still packing them in today. Even at her peak Cilla was virtually unknown outside the UK. Even there her career was brief her last hit was in 1971 followed by 12 succesive flops. no wonder she gave up "singing". Pity she didn't retire earlier and spared our eardrums from her atrocoius voice
@Isleworthful It's not too difficult for a single to sell more copies in the US, given that their poplulation is five times greater than the UK. Cilla gave up singing in 1971 to raise her family, she had four children between 1971-78. She resumed her career by broadening it into television presenting.
@GrahamLondonUK A very good comparison with Cilla was Adam Faith, someone else who couldn't sing a note but achieved a certain amount of parchial fame. One thing Cilla had going for was absolutely fabulous arrangemants by George Martin that almost managed to disguise Cilla's terrible harsh out of tune vocals I say almost but not quite.Cilla was a girl from Liverpool on the right place at the right time who with virtually nil talent rose to fame on the coat tails of the Beatles.
@Isleworthful Yes, you're absolutely correct in saying that Cilla benefited from being in the right place at the right time (Liverpool, 1963), and having very good contacts (The Beatles, George Martin & Brian Epstein). What's your favourite Dionne song? Mine is "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?", my favourite Cilla song is "Step Inside Love", both songs were hits in 1968.
@Isleworthful Tonight (Wednesday 3rd November) there is a thirty minute Dionne Warwick special being shown at 11.10pm on the digital channel "Yesterday", (Sky channel 537 & Freeview channel 12). The programme is titled TOTP2 (presumably from her appearances on Top Of The Pops).
Dionne's vocals on this video is from a 2006 album recording. She was 66 years old at the time. The way she reinterpreted the song with more subduded vocals suited her more matured voice at that age. It came off pretty good.
Great duet. The magical voice of Dionne Warwick + Cliff sounding his most sentimental., making this a truly haunting version of "Anyone who had a heart".
I love this song. Cliff does sing well with anyone. I enjoyed Cliff's duetting with Dionne back on Solid Gold and was quite happy that they teamed up for this. They sound gorgeous together.
