thats Dionne's style of singing.... thats her appeal..... if you've noticed much of her songs in that period were more so methodical then raw bursting emotions( belting)....... Dionne's style and technique is taught all over the world... not many singers in popular have the same musical intelligence and timing that Dionne has....... Cilla is great but was never a special singer and sounded like a quoir girl...

@HarryWebbFan Maybe that 's because Ms. Black did record the 1st UK release of this song. But Dionne's version is the definitive version here in the States. Ms. Black only waited to see what Dionne did next then, basically copied her version for release in the UK. I have listened to both. Cilla has a great voice, but I think she over does it, and sounds strained and forced a lot of the time. She lacks the subtle nuances and sophistication, and ease of delivery, that Dionne delivers.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your remark. Yes, Dionne Warwick recorded the song in 1963 and had a US top ten hit. At this time, Cilla had recorded her first single, Love Of The Loved (written by Lennon/McCartney) and had a minor UK hit. In 1964, Cilla recorded Anyone Who Had A Heart and achieved a massive UK number one hit, which sold close to one million copies.

Yes, Dusty does a great version, as does Sandie Shaw, which is also on YouTube. In case you are not familiar with Sandie Shaw, she was a sixties diva, had three UK number ones and is best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967 with Puppet On A String.

didnt cilla steal the song...lol..... her ppl secretly recorded Dionne then released it before Dionne....

plus... Dionne's version is sung better.... she has much more depth and musicality... thats why she was huge sessision singer before she made it big and joined the likes of burt and hal... and you know what happends next.... they recorded some of the finest classics

I still believe that Cilla Black's version justifies the song with power and strength, Dionne Warwick's version is too gentle.

too gentle? maybe it was meant to be sung softly.... Dionne is a better vocalist... there are number of shades and degress to her voice... she can go from a gentle whisper to an unbridled wail in instant..... Cilla's covers of burt songs sound nasally, shreud and simple........ all Cilla does in these songs like alfie is belt and she is a sub par belter compared to Bassey and Warwick.

Dionne has achived this 56 times and is still a top star today all over the world. I wonder how many people outside the UK remember Cilla whose "singing" career was finished forty years ago

Lets not forget though Dionne is an international singing star still packing them in today. Even at her peak Cilla was virtually unknown outside the UK. Pity she didn't retire earlier and spared our eardrums from her atrocoius voice

One thing Cilla had going for was absolutely fabulous arrangemants by George Martin that almost managed to disguise Cilla's terrible harsh out of tune vocals I say almost but not quite.Cilla was a girl from Liverpool on the right place at the right time who with virtually nil talent rose to fame on the coat tails of the Beatles.

What's your favourite Dionne song? Mine is "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?", my favourite Cilla song is "Step Inside Love", both songs were hits in 1968.

Dionne's vocals on this video is from a 2006 album recording. She was 66 years old at the time. The way she reinterpreted the song with more subduded vocals suited her more matured voice at that age. It came off pretty good.
