Just a thought. If you would set your GPS unit to UTM you could just use the grid lines already on the map and one set of coordinates to find your location. Not to under value a compass but if it’s dependant upon bearings derived from a GPS unit rather than visible land marks you are still very dependant on the GPS unit. The triangulation method in that case is the way to go.
