Sounds similar to whistlers, radio waves generated by lightning. The only difference is that the whistlers decrease in pitch rather quickly, while these signals increase in pitch somewhat slowly.

That sounds soo... unintelligently designed. Of course those "sounds" are shifted into the audio spectrum.  You could get the same results by creating audio from sensing any randomly varying phenomenon -like a flickering flame.
