  • Widescreen sucks for monitors. The only thing widescreen is good for is movies, and that's because movies are letterboxed (they're filmed in standard). We're all getting jipped with widescreen.

  • 2x Widescreens :)

  • I love widescreen, i can have 2 browsers at 1 time

  • 'iv all ways appreciated high rather then with.....' thats what she said lol

  • My full screen is 1600 pixels wide. How wide is your widescreen?

Is it only a tiny 1080 pixels wide? LOL!

Widescreen is a misnomer and an American gullibility test. LMAO

My full screen camera can photograph your widescreen in its entirety plus more height. LMAO

Look at the round lenses on cameras. (Search camera lens and look at your eyes) A round circle, just different heights cropped out. LMAO

Lenses are round, so what's the largest shapes that fit within a circle? LMAO!!!!

  • @TheObfuscatedOne that was about as coherent on the widescreen vs standard monitor video as government brainwashing people is coherent to peanut butter created from australian. do you even own or use a computer on even a once weekly basis? lol.

  • By mu opinion widescreen does a lot better in games such as first person shooters :P

  • Widescreen is better for everything, even programming (Code comparison for starters). I would love more height in ADDITION to width.

  • HeighTH is not a word; It's HEIGHT and WIDTH.

    We don't say WEITH.

  • i use both

    2 dell 24 inch wide

    1 dell 20 inch standard

this way when i design i can get an idea of what it will look like on either platform

  • Standard screens are obsolete get with it people.

  • I'm using a CRT :D

  • i see in wide screen :P maybe it's because you wear glasses, I hate wearing sun glasses as it cuts out like 50% of my vision.

  • You're one of the few people I've ever heard say that standard is better than widescreen. Widescreen is great for movies and TV, but not productivity. What benefit does widescreen give when reading email, websites, or coding? None, zero. That's what soft line breaks are for.

Now I'm trapped into buying a widescreen laptop because the movie industry in the 30's couldn't draw people into theaters; look it up ppl.

  • my is 1366 x 768 on my laptop

Wide screen is better for windows7 as u can have two web pages going at a time with the snap n postion.

  • my is 1366 x 768 on my laptop

  • My laptop screen is so wide (16:9) so I run the windows start bar down the right side instead of across the bottom to reclaim lost vertical space.

  • 3 years later, the answer is evident.

  • @RCTPatriot75 And it's 4:3. 4:3 are much better.

  • It all depends on the users application for it. Graphic designers/illustrators and photographers tend to go for widescreen and writers/journalists, webpage viewing and music production is better viewed in 4:9 as you want to more text shown or more applications shown underneath as opposed to beside eachother. To me the contrast and colour ratio is far more important than aspect ratio, I wouldn't mind viewing in 4:9 if the blacks and colours are deep and rich.

  • flight simulators

  • our range of vision is higher horizontal than vertical, so wide is better.

  • 4:3/5:4 (i prefer the most 4:3) are in my option better for most things like web, text, games. but widescreen are better for movies, but i've got a widescreen tv so...

  • In the market to buy a set of monitors for my new build. Can someone tell me what the heck HDCP support is? I know it has to do with copy rights or something but why is this important in a monitor?

  • HDCP is when u grab your mom by the ass and tell her to get back in the chichen the acon is not going to cook it self hahahaha

  • CRT :D

  • I bought a 24-inch widescreen monitor and returned it a week later. It's ridiculous. The top and bottom are cut off.

  • You can get 16:9 monitors now. Which is useful if you watch films.

  • Well I notice it gives you more of the missing picture on a site. I noticed this on youtube.

  • More websites need to start accommodating widescreen users. Off the top of my head I can only think of Wikipedia and iGoogle that are built for looking at on a wide display. With laptops now outselling desktops, and have been for a while, coupled with the fact that laptops are virtually all 16:9/16:10 displays, then the web designers need to start taking notice. As browsing the web is about the only instance where wide fairs worse off than 4:3.

  • one of each!

  • I like widescreen more personally. I have a 5:4 monitor right now and I can't wait to get a widescreen. Not only do widescreens look better, there's more room for web browsing, at least for me. On a widescreen, it's easier to multitask because you can split the screen horizontally, while with a 4:3 or 5:4 monitor you can't.

  • Wide is very very nice , but i' where did the proportional HEIGHT go? I vote for 16:16,

  • 4:3 monitors are going the way of the DODO, going extinct.

  • i perfer 4:3 for movies and games cos the brain dosnt take any more then that so in the case of movies i loose the plot alot and hate having to move my eyes perfer to be in a zone and you cant with widescreen cos theres always something in the corner (a pair of tits maybe) but turns out to be a mug or dustbin etc and just loose focus same with games imagine pacman in 16:9 wouldnt see the ghosts and would have to physically move your eyes to look at the score would piss me off

  • lol. you wont exert the effort to move your eyes slightly. thats the epitomy of lazyness.

  • the monitor i have is the smallest full hd monitor in the world at 1080p and its by asus but even though its the smallest its still a 16:9 22" monitor!

  • My HP2159m is 21.5 in, and displays full 1080p.

  • wide screens are awesome, better for multi-tasking

  • Comment removed

  • most widescreen monitors are not 16:9, they are 16:10

so its just taller than regular widescreen

  • @RevoJer829 Most widescreen monitors nowadays are 16:9, but I guess back then 16:10 wasw more popular, and I think 16:10 is superior

  • @hTux95 yeah i have a 16:9 23" dell monitor now, i still have my old 16:10 20" acer though

  • @RevoJer829 like my macbook haha

  • @RevoJer829 Wrong most widescreens on the market are 16:9 they are phasing out 16:10

  • It's HEIGHT not HEIGHTHHHHHHHHHH!!!

  • most companies include 16:9 because normally watch movies on the computer. I like widescreen because i can have to browser windows open at the same time: like in one watching chris's live feed and in the other one googleing somthing.

  • Soon widescreen will take over 4:3.

  • I looked it up, his resolution is indeed widescreen.

    I knew it.

    CHRIS LIEESSSSSSSS

  • i just got another 24" monitor and doing dual screens right now, its awesome!

  • I loooooove WideScreen!!

  • on smaller screens on my laptop i couldnt imagine a wide. O_O but on my desktop or on my tv im like wat!

  • Wide screen for gaming !

  • widescreen FTW!

  • Widescreen only exists on laptops because of Bluray innit? Like the point of making monitors 16:9 so you don't get black lines on the top and bottom, but then you get black lines on the side for everything else -.-

  • Id rather have standard.

It just seems normal, i guess.

    But laptops, i like widescreen.

  • Mostly all I do with my comp is watch videos and photo editing, so I like widescreen. More space to work with.

  • Actually in the same size monitor there's actually less total space in a widescreen monitor.

    It just looks bigger.

  • it doesnt even LOOK bigger. i see 22" monitors in the stoore that look like toys. then i measure them and say o shit. this is slightly bigger than mine.

  • Wide screen FTW

  • Futhermore the reason why we have a round pupil in the eye is because this is the more efficient shape for viewing the variaty of objects we see, we evolved this shape.

Not all animals evolved a round pupil, the seagull has a wide pupil because it only ever watches the horizon. However we are not seagulls and I have just scientifically *proved* beyond doubt that widescreen is *SHIT*

Anyone who think otherwise is either an idiot deluded ot a liar or insane. (choose).

  • The human eye sees through a round aperature,

which is basically why widescreen is fooking shit.

    I hate it.

It comes from trying to make the screen bigger in a cinema, however the ceiling is low so they can only make it wider it is shit!

  • Widescreen! WOO!

  • Widescreen is good for games who actually SUPPORT it, but like me, I like to play older PC games, it makes those look gross. If the app is widescreen then I can take it very easily. I fit all of my apps to work around my Vista Sidebar so I can still see that easily, and with many websites slowly converting over to widescreen (Youtube anyone?) My monitor will be set for that. Also widescreen is very friendly with IM boxes. Once I get a different video card I might get dual monitors also.

  • Interesting in fact, because yes, widescreen is more adapted to the human sight, but in your exemple you talk about PC apps and e mail and everything like that. In those cases yes, i guess a standard screen is better.

But for games and movies, it's abviously not :)

  • widscreen cant be good for playing... u have to move your eyes on the sides 24 7... on standards you dont got that problem!

  • i dont lol

  • You shouldn't sit right in front of your monitor maybe.. I don't have any problems with it.

  • I just bought a 20" widescreen monitor for my laptop. It works very well in audio and video editing, and reading text in full width is rather pleasant. I like to resize my browser window to full screen height * half screen width. That way I can get a more vertical view of the pages I'm browsing, and it also leaves some space for the desktop or other programs, if I need to do some drag-n-dropping, for example. I haven't had any negative experiences with this monitor.

  • I don't like widescreen, I want like a 22" standard size.

  • I have widescreen, it's annoying sometimes. Browsing and youtube is all 4:3. Only reason I like it is when I watch a widescreen movie and not have the black boxes on the bottom and top, also I do music and video, which spreads the space I have to work with which is better. It's depending on what you do, not what you have or what is new.

  • having a bigger monitor will force the pixels to put out more and will over heat your computer faster

  • since most software formats work best 4:3, they made widescreen in order to get you to buy bigger monitors to get the same quality(because of wasted space on the side). this way make more money. that simple. you'll also notice that 4:3s are non-existant in the 20 inch+ section

  • Most 17" and 19" LCD's are actually 5:4 aspect ratios, not 4:3

5:4 ratio is a little squarer than 4:3 I took back the widescreen I bought and got a 19" standard. It sucks for movies but is much better for computer use.

Not much choice when shopping for standard monitors anymore. Some stores only sell widescreens, or just one standard model.

  • I'm gonna settle this by saying widescreen wins. Don't get me wrong.. it's only one type of widescreen. The type that can rotate to vertical. So whatever suits you you can have.

  • I just got a 22" widescreen. It is driving me crazy. I wish I could return it!

For internet browsing and most programs, standard 4:3 is better. For DVD watching, widescreen is better, but I don't watch DVD's on my PC.

With widescreen, there is lots of wasted space. I find myself moving my head, eyes and mouse left and right too much.

4:3 ratios are much better for computer use.

  • not really, widescreen is perfect for web browing. hell look at youtube for example.

  • Just remember that 1050 by 1680 has about as much vertical pixels as the typical 1280 by 1024 of a standard ratio monitor. If you want 1600x1200 then purchase a WUXGA (1920x1200) monitor.

  • i agree with this comment

  • Widescreen sucks. I bought a small laptop with a 14-inch monitor. Because it was wide screen, there was TONS of wasted space on both sides of the monitor. The effective screen side because the same of an 8-inch monitor.

The wide screen wasted all your space! My friend has a laptop with a 14-inch regular monitor and you get the full 14-inch screen. The wide screen sucks. I watch DVD on my 110-inch screen theater not my 14-inch laptop.

  • WIDE FTW

im a gamer so it tons better for me it gives you a little pref vison lol

  • i love widescreen, its the way we see things we have two eyes horizontaly side by side, but yeah it can suck for some things.

  • Widescreen is the way to go, regardless, since eventually everything or the majority will be like that. And widescreen allows you to see both versions in their entirity. Widescreen Gaming Rocks. The trying to watch 4:3 on a widescreen can be a pain.

  • But you can resize the player to make it bigger, but it will never look correct, unless you zoom in and lose some off the screen or leave it in the middle. Your preference. This is specifically why you should get LCD and NOT plasma. b/c screen burn-in.

  • I prefer 4:3 not 16:9, for: movies, games ,text, web .

  • 4:3 is the way to go.... 16:9 cuts stuff out...

  • The thing which frustrates me is why all the laptop making companies (which includes lenovo) are cutting down on standard aspect laptops. Thats stupid. I want to buy a thinkpad with latest configuration and with a standard aspect display, but its not possible. I work a lot on shell on linux, and you always want to see your as much code as possible in one shot, but with widescreen, you can only keep scrolling. I am sure the laptop world will turn around and come back to standard aspect.

  • Wrong. It's the other way around.

  • yea its the otherway around tards

  • Your two 30 inch screens are considered widescreen, though their not the STANDARD 16:9. There like the MacBooks 16:10, its like a combo between a true widescreen and a 4:3 screen.

I personally like widescreens more then the classic look.

  • i love widescreen

  • I like wide, I do my browsing on the left and have a vid in the lower right, all my chatting progs are in the upper left. Works for me :)

  • Widescreen 16:9 is good for Video

Widescreen 16:10 is good for Text Gaming and just about everything else.

Most of the programs can be resized.

BY 2008 FCC requires all the TV broadcast to be HD (something like that not sure about the deadline)

  • blasphemy chris, muahhahaha, j/k keep the vids coming

  • Widescreen is better for looking at movies and playing games, so that's the choice/FTW for me..

  • Widescreen is better for moviemaking with all the horizontal timelines and its better for chatting multiple buddy's

  • widescreen is better for gaming, hands down.

  • But Chris, you SEE in widescreen.

  • Yeah, I wonder how he can think that those 30"-monitors are 4:3, when they really are widescreen (probably 16:10, which computer-widescreen-monitors usually are, widescreen LCD-TV's have aspect-ratio 16:9). 4:3 is nearly a square screen, which obviously those screens aren't.

  • pupil is round

    iris is round.

field of vison is 4:3 in angular ratio anyway.

    widescreen is a con

  • I never knew that my labtop has a wide screen. I just relised it when I was closing the lid today.

  • cool monitors!

  • Widescreen better corresponds to your peripheral vision since your eyes are side by side and not one on top of each other. This is why widescreen was invented, to fill more of your vision and allow you to see more without turing your head.

  • Wide screen sucks for me because I am functionally blind in one eye. So with my new widescreen monitor, I have to turn my head left and right to much.

  • Thats nonsense you eyeball has a wide rotation no need to move head even with one eye.

Incidently with two eye they act as one as they both focus on the same poinit.

  • The human eye sees through a round pupil not a widescreen one. Even with peripheral vision gives you have a 4:3 field not widescreen.

Cinemas have relatively low roofs thats the only reason widescreen exists - no fancy arty of scientific arguement for it - it's basically shit dressed up as sugar.

  • The only problem with widescreen I have is that some games or TV shows or whatnot are stretched horizontally due to the aspect ratio being inequal to the screen... stretching a 4x3 to 16x9 or whatever it is doesn't look too pretty. Resolutions that are widescreen may not be available in some games. D:

  • widescreen is nice in my opinion, I have a 1600 x 1024 resultion on my widescreen LCD monitor, so in effect having a 1280x1024 resolution, but with about 300 more pixels on the side.

Which is good for me, because I'm the type of guy who has my taksbar on the side opf teh screen, which is a major impossibility on 4:3 monitors.

  • America, store your junk properly! You'll never know when something old might come in handy.Case in point-just pulled my old C64 monitor out of storage and tied it in to the new security cam.Works perfect!Recycle and reuse for the common good.Best regards..

  • Finally, a comment worth reading... nothing wrong with saving the planet...

  • Widescreen for gaming and graphix tasks but 4:3 for other computer purposes.

  • In addition to my laptop display, I use a 24" widesreen and I love it. I don't think I'd use a standard display again. For graphic designers, widescreen gives more than enough space to work comfortably in.

  • I prefer widescreen since I do a lot of video/audio editing, which uses a horizontal timeline.

  • If you play games, widescreen is the ONLY way to go now. Get yourself a 16*10 aspect ratio monitor, at least 1680X1050, and you will never again think about going back to normal aspect, never ever
