its a tragedy this video doesn't have millions of views :/
I think it shows, in some sense, the priorities of our society that videos of Lady Gaga or even Stephen Colbert receive many more views and hits than any Carl Sagan video on YouTube.
I shutter to think that it might be indicative of an overall lack of interest in intellectual curiosity. I hope I am wrong.
@FreedomLiberty21 lady gaga and justin beaver get more than 100 million views and these videos might never get even a million views. ironically what someone once said to me is true that "this world does not belongs to us thinkers and scientists who seek more than fame and glory"
If only there our world leaders thought like Carl Sagan, We would have a better society, and wouldn't have to worry about nuclear war extinguishing our species for eternity;.
Its sad to think, How President Obama, cut the funding to Nasa, and pretty much killed American space exploration, but yet, he went and started a war in Libya. What does that show for the future of science.
@rubbermuck The audio is taken from Cosmos, which had its own music track. In order to utilize the audio for this video, I had to strip away the music track, which is an imperfect process that leads to some distortion. It's a necessary evil to be able to use this material.
@kaishininjou These videos are not put together in a linear fashion. For instance, the message from this episode was largely meant to raise awareness of the possible consequences of the Cold War nuclear standoff. Obviously, I had to make this more general, while keeping it coherent and restricted to ten minutes. So the original music is not usable for these videos. Moreover, one objective of these videos is to make them more accessible. Many people would find the Cosmos music outdated.
This is so beautiful. But I live in the real world and believe the masses aren't capable of this level of understanding. While a small percentage of us may be able to grasp these ideas and concepts, they'd never work in the world I live in every day. Quite simply, 50% of the population has an IQ below 100, and that's only the beginning of the problem. They can't appreciate what is at stake. Maybe a segment of the human population needs to break off and form a new civilization?
@AlexanderRozhenko I think you’re being a bit too pessimistic. Only two years ago, I was deceived into believing that pseudo and proto sciences and notions such as: paranormal activity, karma, etc., were actually legitimate frameworks for reality. But because I was exposed to Carl Sagan, Sam Harris, and places like the Khan Academy, my entire outlook on reality has changed. The longings and astonishments I had of the Cosmos – which once had captivated me as a child – had been restored.
@MarvelsofaLifetime Perhaps if you lived my life, you'd be pessimistic, too. Or perhaps a better term would be "realist" and not "pessimist." I observe people closely and watch not only how they interact with each other, but with me as well. Just as some members of the population genetically lack the ability to digest lactose, I think some genetically lack the ability to perform critical thinking. That was the basis for my comment. I wish someone would come along and prove me wrong.
after that I wrote an essay and got accepted into Stanford for an International relations course..... I hope this will one day give me the means and influence to change peoples thinking...... I truly hope...
I am 17 years old and am taking a soc and globalization class right now at college and I asked my class if they think it is realistic that one day soon we might all get tired of the stupidity of our governments and demand change. No one in that class said it could happen except me. I told them that if i think change can happen then it will, because there are more people like me out there willing to die for peace and more literacy among the citizens of our world.
It will be many years before nuclear disarmament, think of it as a mexican stand off where all the countries have their guns aimed at eachother if one person shoots, everyone shoots and no one survives, the only way to stop such a thing is a third party to difuse the situation and the current movement that represents this hasn't yet gained recognisable power to draw the attention of the world.
@savedenewt That gave me a good laugh, thank you :) I agree, I think this is by far my best video in terms of the content of the message, and the powerful emotions it evokes.
@callumCGLP Optimus Sagan at the end was a nice touch :P I know it was because of the music removal, but I kinda like it like that anyways so I'm going to pretend you did it on purpose.
@callumCGLP I certainly wouldn't be downrating any of your previous work, either! Hope you didn't think I meant that? I'd only just heard of Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" a month before you started your series and I've enjoyed your imagery and his words immensely over the last few months. Thank you!
@branfransisco9 That warning pertains to the section from 6:44 to 7:14 if you would like to avoid it. It's not extremely graphic, however, and it is important to the message of this video. I wanted to ensure that it wasn't unexpected, that's all.
@rafaelwaa Followed closely by Bill Nye (the science guy :P), Neil Degrass Tyson, my 10th grade science teacher (ok he wasn't a scientist, but he deserves a mention for being an absolutely amazing teacher), and a few others who's name escape me at the moment.
@shackupyourstruly Not really, user friendly - is actually a method that comes from science - 1. commandment : you do not set traps for fellow scientists and you should always state everything as clearly as possible.
@shackupyourstruly Put science education in schools, and support children by always answering their questions and never putting them down. Cherish the questioning nature of humanity, which begs to understand the reality their consciousness has risen in.
True, 'user friendly' is a method of science. But people can forget, or may have never been aware of, the effort that went into a product of science, and start to take it for granted. We ought to learn to value everything, man-made as well as natural, we get for free.
