I agree with all that Bishop Gene says. However, we in the US must be very, very careful when we speak of empowering the poor as most of us who speak these words would include ourselves in the category of the poor when, in fact, we are wealthy "beyond the dreams of avarice" compared to the truly poor of the world. Sharing in the "american dream" is not, as far as I know, a Christian value and its unrelenting pursuit is nothing more than greed.
