@thornsx ..There is that scene where Costner and Duvall are camped out by a campfire and Costner tells how he was in a "special unit" during the Civil War where they basically ended up killing anyone or anything...men, women, cattle, horses, whatever. It was to illlustrate how he became so jaded and cynical and also a cold-blooded killer. Who else besides me thinks that would make for a really kick-ass movie as like a prequel to this??
The best part about this scene is the fact that it was constantly brought up throughout the whole movie what a deadly gunslinger that guy was. And he just bites a bullet before we even know there's a gunfight, lol.
Also liked that they switched to long shots and partially obscured camera angles during the parts where several guys are firing at once in very close quarters. Lots of misses by the good guys and bad guys, even at nearly arm's length. Creates a sense of confusion and makes it hard to identify who's who - just like you'd imagine a real melee would be.
Was immediately impressed with this shootout the first time I saw the film. While it has its 'movie' moments, there's a great deal more realism than is usually shown. Costner got a little carried away using the ratchet stunts on bullet hits (and some were at angles that didn't match up with the direction of the shots fired) but they were an effective attempt to show kinetic impact on the whole body. Created a very visceral reaction on first viewing. And I even liked the romantic subplot. LOL
@keetah2006 I must disagree. This is a good one but what about the bar scene in unforgiven & the ok corral & the creek scene in tombstone? Val Kilmer was an awesome Doc Holliday!
Its not actually a mistake, Kevin Costner openly states he knows the amount of bullets is not realistic, however he likes the idea of the shooter firing all the rounds off whilst fanning the hammer back into one person, he said he wanted it in as a nod to older cowboys. And this was the only point he said he wanted to do it, even if its clearly incorrect. Despite this is bothers me too.
One of my all-time favorite Westerns. Of course, most movies with Robert Duvall just plain kick ass. And not just in an "action movie" kind of way, you know, but they kick ass in every conceivable way.
@jazyjasper They never ever do reload in Tombstone, do they, huh? WOW, I just relized that. it's still an incredible movie, amazing, but that is a BIG mistake on their part.
@Mirdala Yes they do reload in Tombstone. The whole shootout is the same scene in differnt angles in that movie. it's not that hard to figure out honestly.
@E2theSamps Actually, there were many revolvers that held anywhere from seven to twelve shots back in the old west. The six shooters were the most popular because they generally had better design.
Hmmm, I've heard of nine shots (the LeMat Revolver held 9, plus the 10th supplied by the attached shotgun barrel) but 12 would surprise me.
The revolver he uses is a Single Action Army model, which holds only six. It's a movie mistake, but a common one in westerns past and present. Besides, 12 rapid-fire shots make for a much cooler shootout than just 6 :)
@E2theSamps -- I thought that too the first time I saw it, but after watching that sequence over & over on dvd, I realized Charley is wearing two pistols, the one in his holster & a "belly gun"....you can't see it here because his left hand is cupped around it (hand & arm cover it)....Makes more sense then, not like Doc's pistols in "Tombstone" that never runs out of ammo! ;-)
@E2theSamps accually i counted 16 shots from his revolver. 1st in that guy's head then the shoulder of that old asshole. then a 3rd off to his left @ 0:45...4th @ 0:49 right before he turns to look at Robert Duvall gettin wounded. then turns back to his left and fires the 5th and 6th shot @ 0:51 on a wide angle camera. then the moment of the 7th shot, which is heard, goes to a closer camera view to the bad guy reacting to gettin hit. then Costner fans the hammer on the remaining 9 shots. LOL
That was the neigh from Red Dead Redemption

Anybody who doubts that people can shoot revolvers as fast as Costner's character in this film should check out a SASS competition.

Some people forget that in this film, Charlie (Kevin Costner) carries two revolvers. Making twelve shots completely plausible.

I guess he just braced himself because he realized he was screwed and couldn't dodge it.

Well done. I stand corrected :)
In any case, it is Kevin Costner's personal policy to not run out of bullets until he is damn well ready to stop shooting.
