I'm contemporaneous of Hitchcock's films so for me this is really old cinematography and I've been watching lately his movies and I'm completely fascinated with them, they are outstanding pieces of art and beyond its time. I think we can call Hitchcock the father of thriller films and an amazing cinematographer. I recommend "Rope" and "The rear window" of course between many others realizations of this director. Simply GENIUS.
Well, for once, none of the main characters was evil or anything. Marnie and her mom were victims of their circumstances and had developed some pathologies around the terrible conditions poverty and marginalization can create in society's cast-outs. They really were normal people reacting to extreme situations the way normal brains tend to cope. They both had anxiety disorders, not psychosis. Not your average Hitchcock theme. Refreshing really.
@leananshae I'd argue Mark was evil : He blackmails a psychologically damaged woman into marrying him, rapes her after promising not to let him have sex with her and throughout the film acts like a controlling tyrant showing little affection to her. As much as I adore Hitchcock, I find this film overrated. Though his direction is truly splendid, particularly his use of colors and tracking shots, the screenplay's treatment of trauma and suppressed memories does not effectively treat these themes
@Totalpranny Wow, you're right about Mark! I was put off the scent of evil by the way Marnie is at the center of everything. Do you think Hitchcock was misdirecting our attention on purpose? If so, I'd say that makes this one of his most subtle plot lines ever and that would be just pure unadulterated genius... as usual for him!
Thank you, very very much :)
