Come back to AC, it's still an incredible game. The graphics aren't bad, the world still looks beatiful. AC is the only MMO where you can see a mountain range miles and miles away and actually run there and climb the mountains. It's a seamless overworld, don't get that with most (if any) MMO's since
@eddy67 I don't doubt it. I have many fond memories of Asheron's Call, but the game will never be the same for me with only a portion of it's playerbase remaining. Things like exploring the road between Rithwic and Eastham for the first time, and stumbling into a bustly town .. with people in it. It just doesn't happen anymore.
@ACGuy31 I completely agree, I remember the days where you could run almost anywhere and find someone. You could be in the middle of nowhere thinking you are by yourself, only to find more players lol. I miss those days, from 1999-2005ish I would say was AC's best years. Some of the best memories in my life were actually in AC, and I had a great life.
@hawaiibodyboarderz The game was a lot more social back then. I think the fact that leveling was so slow, it almost forced you to be social. You wanted to have downtime. You wanted to do low level quests, because the items were useful to you. You'd also be using the item for months, possibly. I think Dark Majesty was probably the beginning of the end. A lot of good memories.
honestly, best gaming experience ever. It's a pretty unanimous feeling. I sometimes still renew my subscription just to run around and jump off mountains and sit on monkey island and slaughter away. if they took the exact game and updated the graphics to be competitive today, nothing would hold a flame to it. Character classes should have never been invented.
Still the best loot system, best PvP, best Quest lists and one of the larger gaming maps. Newer games only beat Asherons Call in graphics, but pale in comparison to actually gaming experience. Man I miss this game...I would still play if the worlds weren't so empty.
My characters are all still intact and playable, ah how I miss you shoushi mountains and my unexpected cliff dive off of your peaks when I got to close to the edge =( Pretty view though, but I cannot recover my gear, what the hell I just spent hours trying to get down there and now my corpse dissapears?! What the hell!?
omg i played this as my first mmorpg, i was 20 years old back then, yeah nothing match AC till now, of course the graphics is already outdated BUT the game play and the world is superb nothing beats it
@EdisonWum it was made 11 years ago dude.... of course it does. Back when MMO gaming broke charts there were really only 3 big MMO's... Ultima Online paved the way, Everquest added a detailed an in depth world, and Asheron's Call has one of the biggest online worlds, one of the biggest quest lists, and almost unlimited combinations on how to make every char. unique. AC really was great.
@zeusgod007 Well it was developed in 97-98 and released in 99. It's not going to have up to date graphics. Gamers today are to whiney about visual aids and graphics. The story, world, and hundreds of quests is what made AC so addicting. I can tell you have never played a MUD before in your life.
im dying for a new AC... if another asherons call was developed with simliar gameplay to AC 1 ( not ac 2, that was SHIT ) i would be the first one in line to buy it.
i remember playing back in the day and not being able to play on darktide cuz it was constantly full of people.. running through holtburg as a newbie was so fun, grouping with people to kill people 20 levels higher then you <3 Asherons call i truely miss it
I remember playing nes.. you didnt think about graphics being bad or graphics in general becouse there was no such thing as graphics back then.. super nintendo was great I didn´t get big headaches after an hour of playing, and I do remember playing nes felt bad but it was fun
I still own an Atari, NES, SNES and just bought a N64. You'd be amazed at just how bad the graphics were. I never remember N64 looking as bad as it did, because it was great at the time.
lol i was thinking the same thing, i recently played my n64 again and played super mario bros 64, the one where u jump in pictures and stuff, and i remember that being good graphics, then i played it again and i thought they were horrible lol
Yeah, buddy, after you get accustomed to newer graphics and everything, you'll depreciate how older software looked. After revisiting a game after several years, I didn't find it to be as much fun as I did before I found a better-graphiced game.
Turbine has no intention of blocking third party programs, and they've made this abundantly clear. They even hired third party developers early on. Verdantine proved that we don't need another server. I believe there are approx. 20 players logged on during peak hours.
Hail to the king of MMORPGS. World of Warcrack,Evercrap,Loddr of the Blings. They all fall short in comparison to the one and only greatest game ever made.
It's the exact same shape as the hieromancer armor, I forgot what quest it was, but when you apply a certain item to hiero armor, that was added around throne of destiny, then it turns into the exact same style/shape as what is being worn there. It gives it about 100 base AL I think.
Yeah, that was the update to the Hieromancer Armor. It is the same model, just a different style. They also created a Prismatic Armor mage suit from this set.
does any one remember why the verdintine server had a massive drop in players? it was because a really big popular allegiance leader left wasn't it? i was one of the few players loyal to that server i remember huge allegiance quests with the mystic warriors but after that guy left it would be like only 3 ppl in my allegiance was on at all
man how i miss AC i need to get a credit card to pay for my account.
there is no mmorpg that can even come close to asheron's call. WoW is just a crappy mmo with better graphics, AC is the really thing, does anybody here know me by chance on all servers i go by Yuskay and Fizzy's son.
my father went by fizzy the mage and banor on all servers
I got this game in Oct 2000 and randomly picked Solclaim for my server. Made my sword guy in Holtburg and was hooked immediately. Explored and jumped through random portals and made it to Eastham after a few days of wandering. The town was hustling and bustling. Met some cool people who had a small allegiance and I joined them. Hunted gromnies on Eastham beach until I was level 15 and high enough to go to the Lugian Citadel. Guys said I should get an Atlan so the mote hunt started!!!
Does anyone know how many people are still playing this game nowadays. I'm thinking of starting back up. I have tried all the MMORPGs that have looked half decent and none of them even compare to AC just before I left.
There are probably 30,000 or less subscribers. There are 100-200 players on the server every night. This is including combat macros, trade bots and buff bots. If you don't include bots, the number would fall drastically.
ive played this game since launch and beta, and i quit awile back, and i would have to say its the best mmorpg out there, when ur playing the u dont notice the graphics at all, if i could i would go back anyday
ac is the best game ever but what they need to do is take the exact game right now, change the name and advertise it as a new game with a new graphics but keep all the machanics and everything the same and advertise the shit out of it and you would make tons of money and keep everyone happy
Why even Bother to change the name. Just revamp the graphics and relaese it as AC Reborn or something like that (not a very original name I know but you get the idea. By the way, does anyone know what year Atlan weapons started cause I haven't played since the year after that.
Dark Majesty was a great expansion is a lot of aspects, but it also marked the end of an era for Asheron's Call as subscriber numbers declined in the years afterwards. Between 1999 - 2001 was probably the most fun I had in Asheron's Call or any other MMOG.
Totally agree with you 100%, There seriously needs to be an AC3 that incorporates the same combat, (I wouldnt mind melee combat being more like darkfall though), with updated graphics. I would even settle for it all being on Dereth again, with all the same quests and items, but with greatly improved graphics
If it was as easy as just doing it, it would have already been done. Asheron's Call is slowing dying, there is very little funding and the development team is very small. They'd need to be able to port the game to a new engine, without losing all the quirks of the old engine, which is more difficult than creating an entirely new game. They'd also need the funding for such a massive undertaking.
Then, you don't remember what it looked like at launch. I agreed for a long a time, until I did some side-by-side screenshot comparisons. A lot of the textures were updated, there is more facial detail and the landscapes are much more lush.
i was also an AC addict from about 200-2005..now i want to come back but i only have the disks for the original and darm majesty..any suggestions?? do i have to buy a new disk?
I played AC back in 99-01 and quit whenever AC2 came out...AC2 sucked so I went on to play other MMORPGs. None of the newer games even come close to the orig AC so Jan. this yr (2009) I came back and i am completly hooked again. i really miss asherons call :( i remember back in the days of beta, haha. when level five was like, OHMYGOD, youre totally cool, dude, you hit level five!
then the same with ten and fifteen lol, i only remember a few people who made it even that far back then.
and then back before... oh, what was it called. Dark Majesty. i thought the devs started to bug me from there, sadly :(
cheers to the best mmorpg thats ever come out, though, and lots of good memories.
I thought the graphics were great! Even when I got newer hardware it was still impressive because I could turn the resolution up, and have AA and AF. Yum! I loved the graphics! They were very good for that genre right up until 2003ish as I recall.
World of Warcraft is impersonal, because you're playing with the population of a large city. AC2 was a much smaller community, even smaller than the AC community, which was very close-knit. I thought from a development stand-point, they knocked Legions out of the park. It's a shame it didn't do better in retail, it improved greatly on the game.
The bottom line: If you don't enjoy it, you shouldn't. There are a lot of different MMOGs out there and I think they all have something different for everyone.
Actually, it's only the character's. If you look more in-depth of the scenery and everything else, it's actually really nice graphics. Original too. People don't look that far into the game because they tend to think what everyone else thinks. Also, it's not about the graphics, it's about the whole gameplay which people fail to get to because they get to level 15 and quit and not even get to their first dungeon or anything.
I played World of Warcraft off-and-on since retail. I'd take a six month break here, a four month break there. I enjoyed exploring as a low level. While the art style isn't my particular cup of tea, I did enjoy exploring the vistas.
Come back to AC, it's still an incredible game. The graphics aren't bad, the world still looks beatiful. AC is the only MMO where you can see a mountain range miles and miles away and actually run there and climb the mountains. It's a seamless overworld, don't get that with most (if any) MMO's since

But yea, AC2 was beautiful! That graphics engine still stands up today (Isn't it used for LotR Online, and D&D Online) Both crappier then AC IMO

i tried to play both...got bored after an hour
i liked ac because it took a bit of brains, skill and working with an alliance and groups to really enjoy and excel in the game
i dont get wow...its made for 3 year olds

WoW is made for 3 year olds?!?! ARE YOU F***ING SERIOUS!? I can't believe how crazy you are... you are dead wrong... WRONG!
... it's made for a 2 and a 1/2 year old.... tops!

lol
i played the wow trial...asked another player when it stats to get fun....he told me around level 50
i did enjoy flying over stuff tho

Yep, pretty much what I've heard too, then I ask them a simple question:
"Why should I grind for a month or more to get to the "fun stuff"?"
Plus the graphics remind me of a Disney game. Everything looks like a playschool MMO, it's terrible.

sad thing is...lost half my allegiance on ac2 to the beta for wow
that was when the developers got lazy and kept coming up with really lame quests
wow is so fucking impersonal...and the worst thing, they dont let porn stars play
quest advanced

To be fair, while a lot of World of Warcraft is dumbed down, it is to appeal to the non-gamer socialite, which it has done almost to perfection.

The Turbine Engine used for Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online is a heavily modified version of the engine used for AC2.
ACGuy31 2 years ago
They were good for 1999, and considering the loads people would have to manage.

Good God AC2 still had better graphics and game play ...fuck turbine

Unfortunately, it never had a solid, profitable playerbase.

Absolutely. More information on Two Handed Combat can be found on the official Asheron's Call forums.
