i liked them from beaver patrol they sort of pre dated a lot of sample heavy bands this the day is the hour was xlent richard went to bently rhythm ace? clint did soundtracks not sure bout the others? i thought jesus jones and emf were a bit pony tho 2 b honest. liked the fact they do any tv shows they did some obscure kids show once not exactly boy band material.ho ho
I remember (I think it's all a bit blurry) seeing them, The Wonderstuff and Neds Atomic Dustbin within a few months of each other in Australia many moons ago. Great Stuff.
@IDidItSidsWay It is the actual sample from "I wanna be your dog" :-) Great album too. Weird to think the singer now composes for film like Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain and Pi.
@IDidItSidsWay The films are highly recommended, Pi was 1999, Requiem for a Dream was 2000 and The Fountain 2005 or 6. I´m certain you´ll recognise the tune from Requiem for a Dream from, erm, everywhere :-) Look for "Lux Æterna: "the eternal light"" on youtube or Wikipedia.Requiem for a Dream has been voted in the top 5 films 2000-2010.Stunning film.
@andinoble thanx dude, i looked up the song and i dont recognize it but its really beautiful. those movies came out a tad bit before i was old enough to care about the media. but yeah, i'll make sure i'll check out those movies and once again thank you =)
The lyrics about Def Con One and Bic Macs are nothing to do with McDonalds advertising during the 80s. They're quotes from the comic "The Watchman", as are the rest of the lines in the chorus, and some of the lyrics during the verses. It's also mentioned in "Can U Dig It?"
I saw them (showing my age) in the 1990s. Odd to think singer Clint Mansel went on to write the music to Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Moon, Black Swan etc. Somehow makes total sense...
The song was nothing to do with drugs, in the mid 80's the selling point of Mcdonalds was that you could get your food and be out of the door in Def Con One time, suggesting that there at a military state of readiness.....you can pick this together all you like but your wasting your time, it isnt a theory, its what the song is about! ACE SONG.
@02476 don't you think that this song was not only a cynical pisstake of McDonalds use of military imagery then and that it also certainly implied having the munchies?
This is the late 80s - the cold war was not a distant memory but very much a threat. To use Def Con One as a selling point for your fast food seems inappropriate and it makes sense that PWEI would have a go at that.
But that's what I love about British bands - they can do stuff that is both hilarious fun and viciously critical.
Meus 19 anos... fiz rolo nesse vinil a uns 20 anos atrás e por sorte consegui um outro zeradinho a pouco tempo. Ouvir esse disco em vinil faz toda diferença.
I doubt many lasses know who the Poppies are. They we're a little before my time but I still remember being 15 year old sitting in the back of a clapped out Ford Escort cruising around the country roads with my friends every night. We had a brown McDonald's tray on the back shelf covered in rizla packets and snapped tabs and the Poppies was always blasting from the Ford tape player. We spent a full summer doing that.
Can't believe 'Harry Dean Stanton' isn't on here but it will be in 5min.
Time to show my age a bit... I remember my sister taking me to my first club when I was just 16... walked in and heard this mad 'non chart song' about big macs... Ohh how my life changed from that point on, it was straight down the shops the next day to buy this new single. If anyone remembers John and Mark DJing the Ritz on Whitworth St Manchester on a Monday night... You will understand. i bumped into John
Hey mate, John is still there on a Monday night now with Ed...and he's still doing Jillys DJing Fridays and most Saturdays.. He's a mate of mine!!! and he still plays this TUNE!!
It's one of the older single versions pre-This is the Day... This has been reissued on the expanded Box Frenzy. I think this one directly samples I Wanna Be Your Dog whereas the later version has the guitars played live.
LMAO, this song brings back memories. How could you not love the line, "Give me Big-Mac priced to go. This song's album, and their Nothing Records follow up were brilliant
