K2 fascinates me much more than any other mountain, inc. Everest & Kangchenjunga which both look IMO ugly in direct comparison.
Perhaps it's the fact that it is the only 8,000 mountain to be as we pictured them in our childhood, perhaps it's the sheer reputation of it, perhaps it comes down to this & other YouTube vids I've thoroughly enjoyed.
i've heard the north ridge on K2 is the most challenging route on any of the 8000ers. looks pretty brutal haha. I will hopefully be trekking to k2 base camp in summer of 2010!
K2 is a God Damn Beast average vertical is 45 Degrees Thats fucking steep, everest average verticle is 23. Anyone who actually climbs says everest is a "Joke" There are hundreds of more technically difficult climbs then everest. If you Don't Agree you obviously have never summited a peak Before. Dummy's
But there are some incredibly difficult routes on Everest, most notably the Southwest Face. It's true that on a good day most any goon can summit Everest, but only by the 'yak route'; South Col.
so if you don't agree with your opinion, i have never summited a peak? you stupid dumb ass, you think mount everest isn't hard to climb? 8800 meter, not just any goon can climb mount everest, you have to be in a perfect shape to survive there, 1/3 of the oxigen people need. K2 is another thing, together with Nanga Parbat i think the most difficult mountains.
Looks like they had a lot of nice weather. Cool pictures.
I'm currently reading "The Last Step", about the first successful American ascent of K2. Gets dragged down in minutia a bit, but it's still a great story and I'm digging it.
i prefer the pakistan side...looks more challenging...i would never climb a moutain, but have the most respect to those who have and those who attpemted. x x x x
took the hike into base camp in 2005 via mazar ..illick this is china side guys.. much nicer than paki side... much more wilderness .. saw no others in 30 days camels are cool .. stop at the top woof...
actually I'm not a kid. And the fact that you consider wikipedia a reliable source saddens me.
but on a more serious note, take it easy with the f- words, because actual kids might be reading your posts. Imagine for a sec that I was kid......how pathetic is your life that you need to say something like that to a kid?
well its not ur fault tht u dont consider wikipedia as a reliable source unlike most of the internet users do coz i think u havent been taught the meaning of wikipedia.
And abt the f word, i think here also u need to look at dictionary where u can use tht f word, People like u makin this an issue, or search in you tube abf tht f word, u 'll get the answer.
Percentage-wise, 30% of the climbers who attempt the summit die on the mountain. And of those who are in the Death Zone for more than 3 days, the mysterious flute and zither sounds of the Karakoram range drive almost 2 out of every 3 to take their own lives, never to descend "The Savage Mountain"
In terms of death toll, K2 is considered the deadliest. The most difficult climb, steeper and colder i.e. -40C compare to -30C on the Everest. What more you can say? Personally, I envy the courage of climbers who risking their live for the greatest challenge. Hopefully they know what they are doing. And if they are unsure of their survival on K2, please turn back. Don't add names on death statistic.
The famous saying about K2: 'if you summit Everest, the world envy you. But if you summit K2, the Everest summiters envy you'. They say, the higher you ascend to summit K2, the chance of you descending back alive is considerably reduced.
It is indeed.. Way harder. You've got to be a bit crazy to atempt something like climbing K2. It has killed a much higher percentage of the people trying to climb it than Everest. Not that summiting Everest is easy..(!) I have tremendous respect for people with the courage (and cash) to climb these 8000m+ mountains.
My passion is to climb K2, once I get back to Pakistan; I'm going to start training for climbing K-2. I can't wait till I actually climb K-2, I know it's going to take years and years before I actually get to K-2, but I'm still so excited about it.
i was at k2 in 1997 with a british army expidition i fortunatley did not climb it as the weather and conditions became to dangerous and we stopped on our journey at the mountian looking at the statistics it acctually says that this mountian takes 1 in evey three of its climbers
Classic Russian Roulette has 16 % chance of death, less than k2 or Annapurna (from 28 to 40 % chance of death). Unprotected sex and smoking are safe habits, in comparison. Why do we condemn the latter behaviors and deem climbers as heroes ?
well climbing is difficult and takes seroius courage. i don't consider them heroes exactly, but i do respect the physical and mental strength it takes. but 1 out of 3 chance of dying?!?! if it was 1 out of 10, i could see how one could convince themselves that they're better than the other climbers that died and therefore will be able to avoid their own demise, but 1 out of 3 is asking for death -- there's no getting around it
the statistics may be correct, but you can be more cautious or less. if you know when you have to return without reaching the summit your chances may be better.
It's true, BlackFox, if you can spot the danger you can stop your climbing and come back. It's also true that among those dying on k2, annapurna etc, there were the best mountaineers. Sadly it's almost impossible to be sure of a serac resistance. What's true is that there are worst ways to die. If they accept the 40% chance of death on Annapurna, and they prefer to die young on the mountains they love, rather than at an old age on a hospital bedroom, it's their right
but don't you agree that the death rate after 1990 is more helpful to measure the risk? the death rate on almost all eight thousanders decreased noticeably after 1990 probably because of better equipment and more experience. since 1990 only 19.7% died on K2 and Annapurna and only 4.4% on Everest (compared to 37% before 1990).
It's a good thing. I even hope it will possible to build some cableway systems on these mountains, or there will be better and cheaper a jet-propelled aircraft having both vertical and horizontal flight, to help rescuing mountaineers in trouble, lowering further their death toll. However 19.7 % is always more than Russian Roulette (16 %).
In the last accident on K2, one climber from Los Angeles, Nick Rice was supposedly delayed at Camp IV just before he could make the summit push with the rest, and decided to do it the next day instead. But the group that went ahead got trapped in the serac incident and once Rice learnt about the first guy who fell, the Serbian, he knew that its insane to push on to the summit and decided to hasten a retreat back to Base Camp. Surviving this mountain is a combination of real good luck and sense.
It probably is the hardest mtn to climb, cause its much bigger then its surroundings, no sherpas to help you, and probably few are allowed in cause of the kashmir confict. Ah well, i wanna climb it (hopefully i wont die rofl)
k2 is not the only adventerous place in pakistan, you can find many beautiful lakes, waterfall, glaciers, velleys, tracks, hiking places and desert safari.
Don't worry about statistics... just do what you want to do ... at the end of the day... if you want to do K2 go for it... making it to the top of any mountain is an accomplishment just gotta make sure you plan for the round trip because going down is just as important. I'll look to do Everest first though like someone mentioned...
According to Wikipedia at least 56 persons have died attempting to climb. Around 250 people have made it to the top and back down. Scary statistics...
