@humpelhund A bit of a late answer but, yeah, I´ve got it on cd. It´s from 2001 and was re-issued by Mercury (lol) through Universal Music I believe, so it should be no problem getting hold of a copy. Still got my pristine vinyl though :D
Just looking at the date here, 1976, shows just how Graham Parker presaged Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. I think it was through a combination of poor management (he later released his classic Mercury Poisoning about how bad Mercury Records were at promoting his work) and various band changes. His work was a bit random, too. Each album had a couple of great tunes, but the rest of them weren't so hot. Graham Parker was still one of the greatest forerunners of New Wave.
Remember seeing GP in Glasgow bout 1977. Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes were the support and was one great gig with special memories. Southside still tours and coming to Glasgow in October. Always a great night.
Saw them at the Usher Hall in Embra on the same tour. I was friends with some guys associated with The Rezillos and they got great tickets. Fantastic show, two brilliant bands at the very top of their game.
@Herioter This could be a first. Coming of minds between East and West of Scotland. Still up there with the very best gigs I've ever seen and saw most of the greats at the old Apollo in Glasgow. Respect.
To be clear, this is not the Howlin' Wind version...I have fond memories of "The Parkerilla" - it was a Christmas gift from my parents in the late 70's. It was three sides of classic Graham live + a bonus side four with this recording. It was the very first time a double album was released simultaneously with a "side 4" twelve inch single. For us Parkerilla fans, it was rather surprising as the original version on Howlin' Wind was far less disco and much more reggae:) - love this version too!
Listened a lot to Graham Parker in the late 70s and early 80s. Definitely one of the best of that fantastic era! The Parkerilla and Squeezing out Sparks are true masterpieces.
Graham, I'd just love to hear you live and also to introduce your fantastic music to my kids (now in their upper teens).
@jocksmen dont ask me. I only know what I read about "Squeezing Out Sparks" (which I need to find), "Stick to Me" because of the re recording in a hurry and the thin lizzy tour, and the LIVE MERCURY ALBUM because it is in a book called "The Worst Rock and roll records of all time"
I saw GP & TR at the old Capitol theatre in Sydney about a year before they closed it for 10 years. During Hey Lord, Ithough the whole balcony would collapse with all the punters dancing!!! Great Concert!
Oh gawd. I remember watching Night Shift on channel 10 all those years ago! Rated 'AO' lol.
Since retro is gaining momentum, I wish Aussie TV would do a late night music program of classics. In fact I don't understand why one of the major free to air stations doesn't dedicate a digital channel purely for music videos.
one of the great unanswered questions of the 1970's.. why wasn't Graham Parker HUUUUUGE???? This stands up so well against other contenders who are remembered and revered but only half as good... I don't get it....
Same question about Nick Lowe too. Great writers and musicians.
