God he is fucking annoying, the whole point is youre not meant to look at who directs/writes the film. Humans have an inate ability to prejudge. Which i think is what Kermode does repeatedly.

The action scenes are tacked on and a bit too fantastic to be believable, but overall the movie is a big heap of adolescent fun. That's exactly what it is. Here's how you know if this movie is for you: from the minute you first see James Franco's boyish stoned grin light up, if a part of your inner goofy adolescent heart doesn't light up as well, then you might as well walk out of the film right then. Otherwise, you'll really like it.

I personally thought Pineapple Express was brilliant, and I have seen it sober and under the influence of the 'herbal critic', who, I must admit, does seem to find a lot of random crap funny and more or less gives a big thumbs up to everything even vaguely bright and with pretty colours. But still, chemically altered or not, I thought Pineapple express a really funny film. Sure, its a hybrid, but its defintely got structure and builds on the story and the jokes all the way through.

Not every movie has to be arthouse or a homage to Kubrick / early Spielberg, some people just liking having a laugh. Theyre marketed at a certain demographic that will enjoy it, whereas crap like Transformers is marketed at the largest possible audience but at the lowest common denominator.

That isn't true at all. Mark has praised films of all genres, including films aimed at the family and younger viewers. If you had listened to the review, you would know that his criticism with 'Pineapple' lies with the fact that the narrative is all over the place, not that it wasn't oscar worthy. He's praised plenty of dumb movies that were good, solid fun.

I personally think pineapple express is an excellant movie it was deffinitely aimed at a certain market. Dope is great especially when 'it smells like gods vagina' if you dont think that then the movie probably aint for you. I think its the funniest movie of the last decade, but i have been very high when ive watched it.

The almost-resignation at the end really caps this one off for me. It felt a bit like he slowed down and was genuinely baffled (and you know that he has a lot to say about everything). In that sense it really is somewhat of an achievement. It definitely had its moments, this film, and I found that the more you accepted it, the more it had to offer, and as such became a rather enjoyable affair.

I'm American and I see where he's coming from. The Apatow team is extremely overrated, and while some of them have promise, their constant pandering to the lowest-common-denominator keeps them from becoming great comedy writers/directors.

That said, I loved Pineapple Express. Yes, it's all over the place, but that's the fun of it. This is coming from someone who hates most stoner comedies. It's one of the better ones.

i totally agree. i love kermode to no end, but recent american comedy movies in particular, he just doesn't seem to understand why AMERICAN audiences find them funny. i agree that MANY (MAYBE most) are terrible, but the apatow gang are NOT the guilty parties. i agree with him 95% of the time on ALL of his other film reviews, but i think he completely misses the "mark" (*cymbal crash*) on this one...
