Yea it's about a relationship, and change. The apples represent the good times, and when they rot and are filled with worms it symbolizes that even the best of times and best things will come to an end. When the wolf throws his tail to the mermaid girl he's giving a part of himself so that there can still be a piece of those "good times" with her, as he receives her tail cover in the same way. As the saying goes, everything good comes to an end.
