There are not laws saying it is illegal as such to censor....the television networks do it to promote business and it also gives quite a lot of money to what is considered to be premium channels such as HBO, Cinemax, Starz, etc unlike countries such as Austrailia and quite a lot of european countries where it is done through legislation and thus enforceable to a criminal degree.
