Such a beautiful story song...I think of it every time i see the snow fall. I also love Ms.Collins at a real piano.'me ,i'm a loner cuz i can't take the heartache'..wonderful lyrics. Thanks for posting!!!
I'm from Colorado, and this is perhaps the best Colorado-themed song out there (along with "Colorado" by the Flying Burrito Brothers). Any other CO-themed pop/rock/folk/country songs anybody knows ???
I actually have this song on a promo CD single from 1990. No where on the disc is it referenced as "The Blizzard". It is called "The Colorado Song", and the disc has two versions on it. "The Colorado Edit" and the "Album Version". As far as I know, it is actually called "The Colorado Song".
The official title is The Blizzard. That's the title on the album CD, her "Voices" CD and her Christmas CD. When the single was released and distributed for radio play, it was re-named "The Colorado Song" because there was a tie-in with the Colorado Department of Tourism. For the radio track, however, they took a 7 minute song and cut and patched it together to make a shorter, 4 minute song. It was an unsuccessful effort, and the shorter "Colorado Song" never charted.
Heard this song for the first time at a Judy Collins concert in Newcastle Australia last week - it was part of a continuos 4 song set , just Judy at the piano - the audience was spellbound
Like a fine wine , her voice, her face grow more beautiful with the years.I have loved her music since I was a young woman and never tire. She always touches the soul.
@MarcTS Well . . . you couldn't have been that big a fan, she has been singing it in concert for over 20 years, and released it on two albums and two concert videotapes.
One of the most inspirational songs ever. Blizzard is a great metaphor for a bad relationship and best line in the song (though there are plenty of great lines) is "you can leave me, but you'll never break me".
Beta - so nice to see you say that this is your fave judy collins song!! I really thought i was one of the only people that absolutely loved this song.
By far this is my favorite song, but fires of eden is my favorite judy collins CD.
Lying in bed last night, listening to WFUV's Vinnie Skelsa. It's snowing outside, and about 9:00 P.M., Vinnie puts on this song. I'm too old to be crying over love songs, but Judy Collins' voice and the poignant lyrics got to me, and before the song ended, tears were streaming down my face. Stupid, old sentimental idiot! It's a terrific song and I've always loved Judy Collins' voice.
We just saw Judy sing this song live at the Boulder Chataqua Auditorium, in Sept. 09. My husband and I were astounded at her amazing voice, still just as strong as ever. The woman is 70, and she still had those pure high notes! This song made me misty-eyed, it was so lovely. She has a rare gift. Thanks for posting!
I mentioned to Judy that I liked this song at an event. Then when I saw her again, sometime latter in concert, she sang this song., I know for me. "She Remembered" " I love Judy., she holds a special place in my heart."
I heard this song for the very first time when I saw Judy here in Wilmington, DE, my home state, a few years back; she did an AWESOME concert, and I "discovered" this MOST Beautiful and enchanting song. This is my FAVORITE JC song, something about it "speaks" to me, is kind of a nice fantasy to meet up with a "Stranger" somewhere, chat all night while it's snowing loads outside, COZY! and to then "leave" with Him, and then AH what happens "NEXT"... to be continued...
Thanks, Phil for this one! You have quite a collection of great videos here. I can't believe it's been 20 years since Judy wrote this one. It's one of my more "recent" favorites from her.
Just keep these wonderful lost video clips coming, I remember this song so well and loved it so much that I learned how to play it myself, and it was not easy! Saw her perform this piece live and it just put me in a place that I had never experienced before.
Every year, whenever we have our first snowfall of the year, I always play "The Blizzard." It transports me to the "whirl of white powder" world that Judy speaks of in this song. This is my all-time favorite Judy Collins song and is one of the most gorgeous tunes I've ever heard in my life.
@betahifi - So nice to see you say that this is your fave judy collins song!! I really thought i was one of the only people that absolutely loved this song.

Whether Judy talks or sings, her voice is just marvelous! There's so much passion, she pours her heart out into this song, so soulful and her inner beauty shines. So riveting! I am grateful to have been able to find her here. I dream of one day watching her actual performance. Her songs are a treasure. Sisters of Mercy was closest to my heart in those "difficult times" in the past. Can anybody please help where I can write her? Just to let her know how much her song kept me going back then.:)
From RPEEK: I heard this song once. I was driving a gas tanker in the frozen waste land of Maine, just a young buck truck driver..... Only once I heard it, but I never forgot it, and for years searched for a copy of it, always keeping it in my mind, and never never found a copy.. Finally I found it here, on Youtube... Thank you so much.. God, I love this song...... God I love Youtube..
Thank you for sharing this gorgeous, meaniful song. I only hope that WE ALL have that someone that comes unexpectedly into our lives, when we need a helping, kind hand.
Thank you for your joyful, lovely voice.

I heard her sing this in person last weekend. I have been a fan for 40 years and this was the first time I ever heard this song. I was blown away. If you can see her in concert please do. She could retire soon and you will have missed the chance.

@betahifi Perhaps the alternate titles are to prevent confusion with the Jim Reeves song "The Blizzard."

Amazing. I've been a huge Judy Collins fan since the late 60s and I had no idea this song existed. Still things to learn, I guess. Gorgeous.

Judy, Joan Baez and Mary Travers will live forever in their music - all true class acts!
There isn't one singer today who will be remembered this way 40 years after they began their careers.
