There was some crime when I was there in the '70s and '80s. Not rampant crime, but things related to domestic disputes, alcohol, and drugs. You would get the occasional murder--and gruesome when it occurred. Yes, when compared to the ugly world out there, the levels are a lot lower, but it wasn't (and I suspect that it still isn't) perfect...

I went to school in Marquette at Northern Michigan University back in the 1980s. If you're not into the out-of-doors or you seriously dislike cold weather, you have no business living there.

If fishing in the summer, hunting in autumn, and cross-country skiing in winter is your idea of excellent recreation, then you've come to the right place.

Marquette, and the rest of the UP, for that matter, is a beautiful place. My folks live in Ironwood, which isn't nearly as pretty as Marquette, but close enough to the great Lake Superior to make it a great place to live. The winters are too harsh for me, but they certainly do make you appreciate the mild summers. I cannot think of a better place than Marquette to spend a summer, or the two weeks of autumn before the winter, lol.

I moved to Dallas after graduating from NMU to get my doctorate in chiropractic and love the hot weather but miss the slower pace of life the scenery and the people. I lived and worked in Marquette for a year. Found the people generally rather snotty and cold. For U.P. towns, give me the down-to-earth Escanaba or Sault Ste. Marie anyday.

I do have a few very dear friends in Marquette, and as I have mentioned, it is a beautiful little town. Upper Michigan is one of the best-kept secrets in the US, in my opinion. I regret that a few residents of Marquette have represented their lovely community so poorly.

It is typically COLD in Marquette. Definitely. Cold air makes for runny noses, so yeah... Snotty. Maybe you should visit in the summer when the people are warm and sweaty.
