I was digging this song at the age of 10 in 1976. Age wasn't kind to Billy as his albums got worse and worse after "Glass Houses." Last time I saw him was New Years' Eve '90. I thought he'd have more staying power than Bruce.
@EnlightenedRogue I agree: up to Turnstiles he was still learning, then you had the brilliance of Stranger to Glass Houses. Then... Well... I still like them but they weren't as good. To be honest I think Bruce slipped a bit after Darkness - I guess I just preferred their songs when they were essentially poetry to music, back when the lyrics were the most important part.
@TheSonny99 Wow, 2017 must have seemed so far away back in '76... Actually 2017 seems pretty far away at the moment... I'll be 23... That seems scarier than the apocalyptic lyrics right now XD
@CoolbreezeB Hmm... Never really thought about it like that before but yes... It could almost be prophetic... I think he still does but I'm not sure...
@CoolbreezeB Huh... Well I suppose good music like this would raise more money? I dunno, feels kind of weird that he did that... Glad he's still playing it though! There's still time for me to get over to the US and see him perform it live!
@galihauli The studio version on 'Turnstiles', came out in 1976 yes but this version is from the 'Songs in the Attic' live album that was released 1981
This live version in New York City is much better than the recorded version. Love when the crowd cheers for the Yankees when he sings "...the yankees up for free..". Great post, thanks.
@junkie4vids It is such the song, like one of Johnny Cash's live version of "Boy named Sue". The crowd just gets so much into it, just makes the song with raw emotion, it actually lifts the song into the next level.
I love this song, but what I am about to say is from a person that never been to NYC, let alone out side Australia, but, in this post 9/11 world, this song always give he the chills.....
Classic! What memories this evokes. Stumbled accross Songs In The Attic on vinyl in a second-hand shop in South Africa fifteen years ago, subsequently bought the CD, then downloaded it (legally) fron the Internet! Brillaint music, brilliant musician!
yeah i would love to have some of his vinyls too... but i guess the best would be if i could just travel back in time... lol... :D there were so many great artists in that time (+-10 years) I would want to see during their "golden age".... damn... billy joel, ccr, david crosby, led zep and jimi hendrix are just some of them -.-"
well, the only thing i've now is a mp3 player packed with 60s/70s songs :(
Hey... That sounds suspiciously like my mp3 player... *shifty look*
If you ever find a way to go back in time to see all of the great artists of the '60's/'70's, you'd bloody well better tell me 'cause I'm coming too! XD Billy Joel and Eric Clapton - how I would have loved to have seen them at their height (I'd still love to see them nowadays though!)
is this song a live version on ultimate collection. I have that cd and it sounds just liek this.. I love this song but at first I usually hate Billy Joels songs then I listen for a while and they become some of my favourit music. It's weird but he is actually a great artist
Yeah, this version was put on the Ultimate collection CD (which I am awfully pleased about as I don't much like the studio version), the Ultimate Collection was actually the CD that introduced me to Mr Joel :)
I've 'hated' a few of his songs only to discover that they are in fact absolutely amazing too
Yes, but I have never liked Piano Man and still don't though lol. But I really love this song, The entertainer, Innocent man and a few others from the 1st CD and I love the 2nd CD too espeicially all about soul.
Me too - the best versions of some of his best songs on one disc. This CD stays in the car so that we can have it blasting out of the speakers whilst we're driving :)
I know - a lot of his least well known songs are unknown except by his fans. I mean, I loved the second half of the 'Glass Houses' album but those songs are never played anywhere...
I've got this, the studio version and the live Carnegie performance and I really do think this is the best of the three - although I do like the little jazzy piano bit in the middle of the Carnegie version :D

Apparently he still does, I searched and he actually performed it at the first 9/11 charity concert a few weeks after the event.

@kyokoushio What?! You wanted to live through the cold war and fear that your life would actually not be as good as the past generations?
Have of Billy's songs are apocalyptic (including this one)

I agree totally - I'm not actually that fond of the studio version ^^; Not that I dislike it, it's just... Not as... Energetic I guess, as this one.
You're very welcome :)

The greatest version of this song ever recorded. The current version is good but too embellished IMO. This is just pure raw rock.
